Book The Last Road Rebel And Other Lost Stories

Download or read book The Last Road Rebel And Other Lost Stories written by Robert Gilberg and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Bremen, Ohio, was mostly like countless other small farm towns in that part of the state in the 1950s. The primary business at the time was farmingcorn, wheat, hay, alfalfa, and soybeans, along with some dairy farmingand there were always cows and pigs in the fields. And its where author Robert Gilberg spent the first twenty-two years of his life. In The Last Road Rebel, he shares what it was like growing up in that small town. In this memoir, Gilberg admits he is probably lucky to have survived his childhood; some of his friends did not. He is also lucky to have met the right girl at the right time who unknowingly gave him the push needed for him to climb out of an early life with a limited future. The storiessome hilarious, some horribly sad, and some just funtell of a young person who experienced the tortures of found and lost teen love, knew the disappointment of poor preparation for life after school, and finally looked himself in the mirror and decided it was time to get out of that place. Against the backdrop of the times, when the sounds on the radio were changing from Perry Como and Patti Page to Bill Haley and the Comets, Elvis, and Little Richard, The Last Road Rebel recalls the times, places, people, events, and experiences that have stayed with Gilberg forever.

Book excerpt: Li Hsiu-ch'eng - the Loyal Prince - was the most important military leader on the rebel side during the last years of the Taiping Rebellion in China (1851-64). The Taiping Rebellion has been called the greatest popular revolt in modern history, and it came remarkably close to toppling the Ch'ing empire some fifty years before it was finally overthrown in 1911. Captured in June 1864 by government forces, Li Hsiu-ch'eng spent the final days before his inevitable execution writing a personal account of the Rebellion and his role in it. His Deposition is the fullest narrative by a participant and an invaluable historical document. The original manuscript of the Deposition was withheld by the government commander Tseng Kuo-fan and his descendants, and a shortened, bowdlerized version prepared for publication. Li himself was considered a great revolutionary hero in China until the Cultural Revolution when he was reassessed in a major public debate of considerable political significance.

When Highlander Toran Fraser encounters a mysterious rebel for the prince, he can't resist being recruited to her cause... Toran Fraser is hell-bent on taking down the Jacobites. On a late-night mission, he's intercepted by a woman known only as "Mistress J," who's determined to put Prince Charlie back on the throne of Scotland. Toran can't resist her appeal—especially with her pistol pointed at his heart—and suddenly finds himself joining the rebellion... By day, highborn Jenny Mackintosh runs her estate in the Highlands. By night, she's one of Prince Charlie's Angels—a band of Jacobite rebels. Scoffing at mortal danger, she raises coin, delivers weapons, and recruits soldiers for the rebellion. When she encounters a handsome Highlander who is clearly on the run, she is more than a little intrigued. She isn't expecting to be his enemy... Jenny's story has a flavor of the lives of Lady Anne (Farquharson) Mackintosh, Jenny Cameron, and Lady Margaret Ogilvy, who raised troops, collected funds and weapons for the rebels, fought in battles, and aided men in escaping the wrath of their enemies. Readers love Eliza Knight: "Passion and intrigue collide... Knight mixes emotional conflicts with interesting historic detail and produces a hero whose honor and prowess is memorable indeed."—RT Book Reviews for The Highlander's Reward "Ms. Knight has a gift for writing wonderful characters that pull the reader into the story...
