Download or read book Hope in the Dark written by Rebecca Solnit and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2016-05-14 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] landmark book . . . Solnit illustrates how the uprisings that begin on the streets can upend the status quo and topple authoritarian regimes” (Vice). A book as powerful and influential as Rebecca Solnit’s Men Explain Things to Me, her Hope in the Dark was written to counter the despair of activists at a moment when they were focused on their losses and had turned their back to the victories behind them—and the unimaginable changes soon to come. In it, she makes a radical case for hope as a commitment to act in a world whose future remains uncertain and unknowable. Drawing on her decades of activism and a wide reading of environmental, cultural, and political history, Solnit argues that radicals have a long, neglected history of transformative victories, that the positive consequences of our acts are not always immediately seen, directly knowable, or even measurable, and that pessimism and despair rest on an unwarranted confidence about what is going to happen next. Now, with a moving new introduction explaining how the book came about and a new afterword that helps teach us how to hope and act in our unnerving world, she brings a new illumination to the darkness of our times in an unforgettable new edition of this classic book. “One of the best books of the 21st century.” —The Guardian “No writer has better understood the mix of fear and possibility, peril and exuberance that’s marked this new millennium.” —Bill McKibben, New York Times–bestselling author of Falter “An elegant reminder that activist victories are easily forgotten, and that they often come in extremely unexpected, roundabout ways.” —The New Yorker

Download or read book Outposts of Hope written by Douglas D. Webster and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original recipients of the Letter of First Peter inhabited a radically different social context from our own. We do not live under Roman imperial rule. Slave labor is not the driving force of our economy. Women are not under patriarchal domination in our culture as they once were. Society has changed, but what is beyond dispute is that Western culture remains antithetical to God's will and hostile to the Jesus way. The imperial Caesar has been replaced by the imperial self. The Pax Romana has been replaced by the American Dream. Western capitalism still trades in the bodies and souls of human beings. Culture obsesses over sexual freedom and material indulgence. Idolatry is pervasive. Autonomous individualism is the ideal. First Peter is about the inevitable clash with culture that ensues because of the good news of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Peter's bottom-up profile of costly discipleship is far more radical than we may realize. Hostility against the church is the believer's opportunity under pressure to reveal the goodness of God. Suffering and submission are essential for Peter's Christ for culture strategy. Sacrifice is the leverage of the gospel. Cross-bearing humility is the strategy for relating to culture and Christlike humility is essential for living in the household of God.

Download or read book Fear Hope written by Luke Marusiak and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of the steel industry in the 1970s hit Western Pennsylvania hard. Hundreds of thousands lost their livelihoods, population sank, schools closed, and despair ruled many. In the midst of these trials, the destinies of three who came of age during that time Philip Bennet, Liam Conti, and Ruth O'Brien were determined by the choice they made: that of fear or that of hope. As the three grapple with their situation and their yearning for significance, they discover their fight is part of a much larger struggle. Excerpt from the preface Barack Obama referring to Pennsylvanians, April 2008: "It's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them . . ." That characterization is so far from the truth; an answer is in order. Fear & Hope is intended to be that answer. This novel is meant, first of all, to entertain because the Western Pennsylvania tragedies and triumphs are one heck of story. But it is also, in some small measure, meant to both rebuff Mr. Obama's pompous marginalization and point out the cautionary tales of high-cost mistakes made then that are being repeated today. This novel is part of the Good Fight Series and overlaps times and characters of Marx & Ford, Loud & Clear, and the upcoming Gold & Glory.

This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all go through seasons of waiting, times when God just seems to have closed His ears to us and turned His back. During those seasons, it’s easy for us to give up hope and lose heart. But what if we hold on to the hope that God is working behind the scenes, even if we can’t see Him? What can we learn from those times of waiting? Shannon Brink has experienced those seasons herself—after various injuries forced her to stay in bed for weeks on end, while she was facing possible infertility but longed to be a mother, as door after door closed on her dreams of living in a far-away land, and now as she waits for sleep to come while battling chronic insomnia. As a former nighttime nurse, Shannon knows that the hardest time of the waiting season is at night, when our thoughts take over and worry invades. Drawing from her own experiences and from the examples of God’s people in the Bible who also experienced seasons of waiting, Shannon encourages the reader to hold on to the One Who created us and has only our good in mind. While waiting in the dark, cling to the Light.

Download or read book Reclaiming My Hope written by Dr. Ethel Madison Van Buren and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-02-25 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote this book, through my own voice, about my life experiences during the Jim Crow era, when the concept of "separate but equal" permeated the entire Southland of our nation, and the impact it made on my heart, mind, and soul. In this memoir, I give my description of how the ugly truths about segregation and discrimination during the early '50s and late '60s until the present day impacted my life. I describe how the unforgettable day that shamed the nation unfolded before my very eyes, and I include my accounts of unforgettable events leading up to that day and the aftermath. The remainder of the book gives my personal reflections about hope for justice, peace, healing, and reconciliation. My words on the pages within are honest and straightforward. I utilized the wisdom and the knowledge that I learned during my journey through life to convey my true feelings. Being able to tell my story has helped me to move peacefully beyond the painful memories of the darkness of the past into the light of change. I have learned how to fuel my thoughts with positive possibilities because divine order prevails in my mind and my life. And I do believe that God is the source of all prosperity, and I give thanks in advance knowing that my highest good is unfolding now. I have moved beyond the mindset of powerlessness to seeing life through forgiving eyes. Yet the memories of the ugly events of the past, I will never forget. Because on an underlying level, racism still pledges our society.

Download or read book Hope Fights Back written by Andrea Lytle Peet and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incredible story of a young woman living with ALS, who defies all odds by finishing fifty marathons and, in turn, inspires people to “go on, be brave.” Andrea Lytle Peet was thirty-three years old—an urban planner living in D.C., newly married, and a triathlete—when she received the death sentence of an ALS diagnosis (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease). After grappling with the fact that she will likely become paralyzed and die within two to five years, Andrea experienced an unexpected spark that changes her outlook in the most magnificent way. Inspired by Jon Blais, famous for finishing the IRONMAN World Championship while fighting the same disease, Andrea sets an "impossible" goal to become the first person with ALS to complete a marathon in all fifty U.S. states on her recumbent trike—since she is no longer able to run. In her mission, Andrea recaptures the freedom that racing always gave her and inspires others to appreciate what our bodies can do. Her mindset shifts to accepting that although she is dying faster than she might have otherwise, we are all on the same path. Andrea, along with her husband and ALS community, prove that we all have choices in how we spend our precious lives—no matter what challenges we face. Hope Fights Back chronicles what happens when we choose to live instead of waiting to die. It is a "love letter to life" and a beautiful love story between Andrea and her husband, David. Andrea’s words are awe-inspiring for athletes and non-athletes alike. The reader intimately witnesses Andrea’s tenacity, determination and bravery, not only in accomplishing her fifty marathons goal, but in her day-to-day life with ALS. In a world where “hope” sometimes feels quiet and aspirational, Andrea reveals that hope is, instead, a valiant warrior that changes everything when it fights back. In Hope Fights Back, readers will be empowered by Andrea's force as an athlete and a woman fighting the battle of her life. For readers of Until I Say Goodbye, Let Your Mind Run and Between Two Kingdoms, Hope Fights Back is a magnetic and radiant story filled with soul-baring honesty, love and true grit. A documentary about Andrea’s triumphant journey, Go On, Be Brave, will premier at the 2023 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Download or read book Lucifer s Hope the Guv written by James L. Clark and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike humans, Lucifer is ineligible for redemption and therefore doomed to eternal hell. Playing on God's sense of fairness, Lucifer appeals to the Archangel Michael for a chance to redeem himself by turning a person he corrupted into a paragon of virtue. Against his own wishes, Michael makes the deal. However, since moral perfection is impossible for anyone, he decrees that Lucifer must attain redemption by seeing that his subject does not break nine of the Ten Commandments politically. The agreement is struck and the target of Lucifer's effort will be the corrupt, wealthy governor of Kentucky, who is gearing up for reelection and is hopelessly paranoid about his opponents. Besides engaging in the usual local corruption, the "Guv" worms his way into a deal to bring riverboat gambling to the state. Lucifer dispatches an imp disguised as a political consultant to infiltrate the campaign and influence the governor toward political righteousness. The imp and the governor's spokeswoman share a romantic attraction, which is also resolved in this rollicking, metaphysical muckraking of Kentucky politics.
