Book Beyond Bias and Barriers

Download or read book Beyond Bias and Barriers written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-05-04 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States economy relies on the productivity, entrepreneurship, and creativity of its people. To maintain its scientific and engineering leadership amid increasing economic and educational globalization, the United States must aggressively pursue the innovative capacity of all its people—women and men. However, women face barriers to success in every field of science and engineering; obstacles that deprive the country of an important source of talent. Without a transformation of academic institutions to tackle such barriers, the future vitality of the U.S. research base and economy are in jeopardy. Beyond Bias and Barriers explains that eliminating gender bias in academia requires immediate overarching reform, including decisive action by university administrators, professional societies, federal funding agencies and foundations, government agencies, and Congress. If implemented and coordinated across public, private, and government sectors, the recommended actions will help to improve workplace environments for all employees while strengthening the foundations of America's competitiveness.

Book Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation

Download or read book Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-07-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order for the United States to maintain the global leadership and competitiveness in science and technology that are critical to achieving national goals, we must invest in research, encourage innovation, and grow a strong and talented science and technology workforce. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation explores the role of diversity in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce and its value in keeping America innovative and competitive. According to the book, the U.S. labor market is projected to grow faster in science and engineering than in any other sector in the coming years, making minority participation in STEM education at all levels a national priority. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation analyzes the rate of change and the challenges the nation currently faces in developing a strong and diverse workforce. Although minorities are the fastest growing segment of the population, they are underrepresented in the fields of science and engineering. Historically, there has been a strong connection between increasing educational attainment in the United States and the growth in and global leadership of the economy. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation suggests that the federal government, industry, and post-secondary institutions work collaboratively with K-12 schools and school systems to increase minority access to and demand for post-secondary STEM education and technical training. The book also identifies best practices and offers a comprehensive road map for increasing involvement of underrepresented minorities and improving the quality of their education. It offers recommendations that focus on academic and social support, institutional roles, teacher preparation, affordability and program development.

Book Access Denied

Download or read book Access Denied written by George Campbell Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-05-04 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Civil Rights Era of the 1960s, minority groups have seen a tremendous amount of progress, but African Americans, Latinos, and American Indians still remain severely underrepresented in science, engineering, and mathematics. And although government, industry, and private philanthropies have supported more than 200 pre-college and college-level initiatives to increase the access and retention of minority students, the outcomes of these programs have not been well documented. This book from the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME) presents definitive essays by leading research scholars, academics, and industry representatives on the participation of minorities in science, mathematics, and engineering. Its extensive coverage includes essays on current demographics, entering the education system, influences on minority participation, barriers to success, and preparation for academic careers. It is ideal for scholars, researchers, educators, and policymakers who study and strive to break the barriers of discrimination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineers and scientists in the United States have always been among the nation's greatest assets. Their work has led to world leadership in scientific and technological innovation. Recent trends are disturbing. These is concern over the quality of science and technical education at the elementary, secondary, and college levels. High school students in the United States lag behind those of other industrialized nations according to several sources. At the doctorate level, half of all graduate students in science are foreign nationals. To be economically competitive at home and abroad, the United States must have scientists and engineers who can keep the nation at the forefront of technological development. Reported in this document are: (1) "Trends Affecting the Future Supply of Engineering Students"; (2) "Systemic Barriers to the Participation of Women and Minorities in Engineering"; (3) "What Works at the State and Local Level"; (4) "The Governor's Role"; and (5) a "State Action Agenda." Appendices include descriptions of various state initiatives, and a directory of the Women and Minorities in Engineering Project Advisory Committee. A list of 44 references is included. (CW)
