Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Speeches: And How to Make Them It is true that not every one can be a great orator, yet to have a place even in the second or third rank is a worthy ambition. A man may become excellent, tho he may not become great. As an old writer has said, even if we have little hope of surpassing great men, we may deem it an honor to follow them. Book Mr Chamberlain s Speeches Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mr Chamberlain s Speeches Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Joseph Chamberlain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mr. Chamberlain's Speeches, Vol. 1 Early this year the publishers of these volumes inquired Whether my father would be willing that they Should re produce a selection from his Speeches. The idea pleased him, and he was gratified by Mr. Boyd's ready consent to undertake the task of selection and presentation. He accordingly placed at Mr. Boyd's disposal the scrap books in which had been collected the newspaper reports of his speeches from the beginning to the end of his long public life. The choice made from this vast mass of material is Mr. Boyd's. NO restrictions or conditions of any kind have been imposed upon him. The principle which has guided his selection is explained in his prefatory note. It was to make the collection representative of the full sweep of a long and famous career.' It will, I think, be found that he has admirably fulfilled this promise. It was my father's Wish that I should prefix a few words of introduction to the collection. The time has not yet come, nor in any case am I the proper person, to measure exactly all he did and all he was, but these Speeches will show something of the man, of his character, and of his achieve ments. He cared little about charges of inconsistency, and no attempt is made here to gloss over any change Of thought or method. But I believe with him that through all his years of unceasing growth and widening outlook on men and things there was an underlying consistency of spirit and of purpose which gives unity to the whole. Book Selected Speeches

Download or read book Selected Speeches written by Edward Clarke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Speeches: With Introductory Notes We all wish to leave behind us the memorial more lasting than brass of which the poet speaks, and I think we would all prefer to be remembered by a portrait rather than by an epitaph. This book is my portrait. I have put all of myself into these speeches. And I would like to think that when I am dead those who come after me and are for any reason interested in the story of my life will be able to form a judgment for themselves about me, and so far as possible judge me by my own words and actions. I must add a word as to the forensic speeches. A speech in a criminal or civil case is meant to secure a particular result, the verdict or the judgment, as the case may be; and its purpose is wholly fulfilled when that result is obtained. Here the art of rhetoric is at its highest; but it is not easy to choose forensic speeches for reproduction. Many are so full of detail which was well understood by the judge or jury to whom they were addressed that they cannot be appreciated or enjoyed by those who have not heard the evidence. Book Speeches and Toasts

Download or read book Speeches and Toasts written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speeches and Toasts: How to Make and Propose Them, a Handbook of Social Speech-Making for Every Occasion Silence may be "golden," as the proverb has it, on certain occasions when by speaking strife may be protracted; but there are times and seasons when speaking is not only admissible but necessary. The power of a speech, the influence for good (as well as for evil) that a powerful speaker can exercise over his hearers, is a possession greatly to be desired. But not every speaker can enchain his audience. Still it cannot be denied that a man who can speak well upon any subject will have a following; and it is a fact that nearly all, if not all great movements, have been set going by the power if speech. "Deeds, not words," is a good motto; but deeds are done and over. Words excite or calm; grow and bear fruit. Deeds may create or destroy; oratory builds up and incites to deeds. Speech, then, is the mainspring of action, the advocate of peace. "Eloquence is the queen of the world," and by oratory comes fame and power. The power to turn men's minds and influence their actions by persuasive eloquence is a grand possession; to carry away an audience in parliament, in court, in pulpit, or theatre is a sign of power of brain, the result of study and application. Now how must this power be attained? How can we inscribe our names upon the roll of fame and have it handed down to posterity? Let us see! There are certain essential qualifications for the speaker which will be immediately recognized - clearness of utterance, deliberation of manner and repose of mien. The hurried man will stammer, the nervous man will flounder in his talk. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Speeches of Note

Book excerpt: From the author of the New York Times bestseller Letters of Note comes a collection of 75 of history's most interesting, profound, and sometimes unknown speeches from a range of scintillating personalities such as Frederick Douglass, Justin Trudeau, Albert Einstein, Meghan Markle, Barbara Jordan, and Ursula K. Le Guin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Structure of an Effective Public Speech The short addresses in this small volume originally were delivered by the author as one of the members of a class in public speaking at the West Side Y. M. C. A., in New York' City. Mr. Walter H. Robinson, who conducted the class, requested that the addresses be put in written form. This was done, with some amplifications, and the addresses were then read before the same class. Some of the members were kind enough to sug gest that the addresses should be pre served in printed form, as they believed they had derived valuable assistance from them. In deference to this sugges tion the author has had them printed privately, without making any attempt to secure a publisher for the purpose of having the work distributed generally. Book Figures of Speech

Book excerpt: Writing is not like chemical engineering. The figures of speech should not be learned the same way as the periodic table of elements. This is because figures of speech are not about hypothetical structures in things, but about real potentialities within language and within ourselves. The "figurings" of speech reveal the apparently limitless plastic
