Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read Few have failed to be charmed by the witty and independent spirit of Elizabeth Bennet in Austen's beloved classic Pride and Prejudice. When Elizabeth Bennet first meets eligible bachelor Fitzwilliam Darcy, she thinks him arrogant and conceited; he is indifferent to her good looks and lively mind. When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. In the sparkling comedy of manners that follows, Jane Austen shows us the folly of judging by first impressions and superbly evokes the friendships, gossip and snobberies of provincial middle-class life. Book excerpt: Austen’s most celebrated novel tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet, a bright, lively young woman with four sisters, and a mother determined to marry them to wealthy men. At a party near the Bennets’ home in the English countryside, Elizabeth meets the wealthy, proud Fitzwilliam Darcy. Elizabeth initially finds Darcy haughty and intolerable, but circumstances continue to unite the pair. Mr. Darcy finds himself captivated by Elizabeth’s wit and candor, while her reservations about his character slowly vanish. The story is as much a social critique as it is a love story, and the prose crackles with Austen’s wry wit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pride and Prejudice is a romantic novel of manners written by Jane Austen in 1813. The novel follows the character development of Elizabeth Bennet, the dynamic protagonist of the book who learns about the repercussions of hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness. Its humour lies in its honest depiction of manners, education, marriage, and money during the Regency era in Great Britain.Mr Bennet of Longbourn estate has five daughters, but his property is entailed and can only be passed to a male heir. His wife also lacks an inheritance, so his family will be destitute upon his death. Thus it is imperative that at least one of the girls marry well to support the others, which is a motivation that drives the plot. The novel revolves around the importance of marrying for love, not for money or social prestige, despite the communal pressure to make a wealthy match. The novel is set in rural England in the early 19th century. Mrs Bennet attempts to persuade Mr Bennet to visit Mr Bingley, a rich bachelor recently arrived in the neighbourhood. After some verbal sparring with her husband, Mrs Bennet believes he will not call on Mr Bingley. Shortly after, he visits Netherfield, Mr Bingley's rented residence, much to Mrs Bennet's delight. The visit is followed by an invitation to a ball at the local assembly rooms that the entire neighbourhood will attend. At the ball, Mr Bingley's friendly and cheerful manner makes him popular with guests. He appears attracted to Jane Bennet (the Bennets' eldest daughter), with whom he dances twice. Bingley's friend, Mr Darcy, reputed to be twice as wealthy, is haughty and aloof, causing a decided dislike of him. He declines to dance with Elizabeth (the Bennets' second eldest daughter), stating she is not attractive enough to tempt him. Elizabeth finds this amusing and jokes about it with her sisters.Mr Bingley's sister, Caroline, later invites Jane to Netherfield for dinner. On her way there, Jane is caught in a rain shower and develops a bad cold, forcing her to stay at Netherfield to recuperate. When Elizabeth goes to see Jane, Mr Darcy finds himself becoming attracted to Elizabeth, while Miss Bingley grows jealous, as she herself has designs on Mr Darcy.Mr Collins, Mr Bennet's cousin and heir to the Longbourn estate, visits the Bennet family. He is a pompous, obsequious clergyman who intends to marry one of the Bennet girls. After learning that Jane may soon be engaged, he quickly decides on Elizabeth, the next daughter in both age and beauty.Elizabeth and her family meet the dashing and charming army officer, George Wickham, who singles out Elizabeth. He says he is connected to the Darcy family and claims Mr Darcy deprived him of an occupation (a permanent position as a clergyman in a prosperous parish with good revenue) promised to him by Mr Darcy's late father. Elizabeth's dislike of Mr Darcy is confirmed.[Source: Wikipedia]

Book excerpt: I think that mature readers of age 13 and up should enjoy this. It is a light-hearted story that took me a while to read, but it is worth it. Jane Austen is an amazing writer and some of the issues brought up in the book are still relevant today, which is a great thing to discuss with your family. I read this along with my mum, so we could ask each other questions along the way. I suggest this if your child is reading Pride and Prejudice as his/her first classic novel, because the style is very different to that of a modern story. The characters are fantastic! From vapid Mrs. Bennet and her four very different daughters to the brooding Mr. Darcy. When Lydia, the youngest daughter, runs away with her lover Wickham, it is seen as a complete scandal. Obviously in our society today, that wouldn't be such a terrible thing and it brings up another good discussion point: how etiquette and what is right and wrong has changed over the past years. If you enjoyed this book, I would suggest reading the parody, "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", but I would only reccommend this to very mature readers of 14 and up. Thanks for reading my review: please rate it because I love hearing what you think!

Pride and Prejudice has consistently appeared near the top of lists of "most-loved books" among literary scholars and the reading public. "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." So begins one of the most beloved novels of all time written by an equally beloved author: Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Pride and Prejudice was first published in 1813, the third--and arguably most popular--of her six major novels. The story follows the young and opinionated Elizabeth Bennet and her four unmarried sisters as she navigates issues of wealth, class, and morality in a society that prizes marriage above all other goals for any respectable young woman. Pride and Prejudice has enjoyed lasting popularity in the 200 years since its first publication, and continues to be widely read and appreciated by casual readers and literary scholars alike. It is frequently included on "Best Books" lists and has been adapted for film, television and the theatre as well as served as the inspiration for numerous literary adaptations including sequels and spin-offs. This particular edition of Pride and Prejudice was published in 1894, 81 years after its original publication, and contains a preface by George Saintsbury, a scholar and literary historian. It also contains a variety of whimsical pen-and-ink illustrations by Irish illustrator Hugh Thomson. This beautiful edition is only one of many examples of the way in which Austen and her works have been read and enjoyed by many different people over a long period of time, and interpreted through many mediums.
