This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Readings in American Government This book, Select Readings in American Government, is published for the purpose of providing in a convenient form a number of carefully chosen articles, excerpts, and documents the reading of which will aid the student or the lay citizen of the United States in developing an intelligent understanding Of the federal system Of government in. Which he partici pates and for which he carries such heavy responsibilities. It is designed especially for use in college classes as supplementary material in a general course in American government. Obviously, it is not planned for specialists. Federal government is necessarily legal in nature. Some knowledge of constitutions is essential even for the average citizen. Readings in this book furnish some information about constitutions, but not enough for the constitutional lawyer. Constitutions in America today have grown out of past experience and have been influenced by political thinkers Of the past. Some selections are included to help the reader realize this significant fact; but historians will need to go deeper, and political theorists will want to read far beyond the limits of this volume. Decisions Of the Supreme Court Of the United States can not be omitted if one is to under stand American government, but this not not a case - book. Few people will want to read all Of the Congressional Record, but valuable aid for the understanding of government may be gained from excerpts from that Record. An understanding of the functioning of government depends not only upon some appreciation of constitutions, history, past political thought, Supreme Court decisions, and official actions of men in governmental posi tions, but also upon an acquaintance with personalities and pressures which are dominant in government at any given time. The editors have, therefore, deemed it advisable to include some articles which encourage thought about personalities and pressures. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in American Government and Politics While the materials come from a large variety of sources, I have chosen wherever possible from the writings of men who have had a practical experience in the conduct of government. I have also sought to illustrate the larger and more permanent features of our political system, rather than to furnish a handy guide to the law and practice. To facilitate the work of the student and teacher, I have endeavored to make each extract clear, compact, and self-explanatory, and in several instances I have condensed considerably by omitting obscure allusions and passages not bearing directly on the principles which I have wished to bring out. To avoid marring the pages with unsightly points, I have merely placed an asterisk at the head of each selection which has been subjected to this process of condensa tion. The side notes are intended primarily to help the teacher in conducting class discussions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Readings on American State Government Classic Reprint written by Paul Samuel Reinsch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings on American State Government The editor offers this second volume of readings to students and to the public in the hope that it may help to make more familiar the actual working of our state governments. It is mat ter for regret that there is no such source of information as the Congressional Record affords in matters relating to the national government. So much of the real activity of the state legislatures taking place in the comparative seclusion Of committee, combined with the incomplete nature and intent of the current press reports, forces the student of the real life of the state lawmaking bodies to rely upon the agencies which are coming into existence to remedy this defective publicity and Observation. State documents, too, are, in the main, rather statistical and local in character. The messages of the governors are frequently, however, quite invaluable sources, while the Opinions of our courts and the conferences of the bar associations are a seemingly hitherto unworked mine. To the field workers in the study of actual government - the newspaper re vmrters and magazine writers - the public and students owe a debt they are not always conscious of. The editor desires to make grateful acknowledgment to the various publishers and authors, individually recognized in the text, who have generously permitted him to make use of selections from articles or works published or written by them. The editor of the present collection desires to express his deep indebtedness to his colleague and friend, Mr. William L. Bailey, for his invaluable assistance in the preparation of this volume. Not only did he furnish many of the selections, but he counseled with respect to the general plan of the book; and, finally, the editor, called abroad on a public mission, was obliged to turn over to him the arduous task of seeing the volume through the press. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in American Government The purpose of this volume is to bring together a number of articles and documents which are not readily available for classroom use but which are of value because they show how the government functions. Each selection has been chosen because of its vigor, its thoroughness, and the freshness of its point of attack. Most of the readings have been put to the test with a group of college sophomores and juniors in the School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University, who have responded to the material with more enthusiasm and interest than to the text-books. As far as possible, selections have been reprinted which show the relationship of economics, sociol ogy, history, and psychology to the problems of government. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: II POWERS OF THE EXECUTIVE There has recently been much discussion of the proper extent of the executive powers, especially in the national government, where there has taken place a great expansion of executive functions. By many men this tendency has been attacked as dangerous, while others see in it only that growth of governmental power which would naturally accompany the increase in national wealth and population. The speeches of Senator Rayner and Representative Towne, directing themselves against the expansion of the executive power, will serve to bring out clearly the matter in controversy. Allowance being made in all Congressional speeches for partisan bias, the attacks of the opposition will often bring out most clearly new political developments. Senator Rayner's speech was made in the debate upon the President's action with respect to San Domingo. Mr. Towne was speaking on party politics during the discussion of the Consular and Diplomatic Appropriation Bill. For a good general treatment of this subject see Ford, Rise and Growth of Am. Politics, 275.] FROM A SPEECH OF SENATOR RAYNER1 Now let us look for a moment at the result of the President's construction of his prerogative. A new sect of political scribes have commenced to edit a revised edition of the Constitution. They call it the unwritten Constitution. They are framing an apocryphal collection of epistles and are promulgating their heresy from academic chairs and lecture platforms. The President is the prophet of this new creed and the Messiah of this strange hallucination. They do not propose to add any additional chapters to the original manuscript, but they insist that under the general-welfare clause, which is simply a repetition of the phrase that was used in the Articles of Confederation, th...

Download or read book The Essentials of American Government Classic Reprint written by Francis Newton Thorpe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of American Government It is somewhat presumptuous to attempt to reduce American Government to its essential principles. The subject is difficult - more or less technical and quite beyond the compass of any one book. Therefore, in writing the present volume, the author cites many books in which the matter under immediate consideration is discussed at length. The rule of rules for the student of American government is Multum, not Multa. There is peril, if only the principle be considered, that what knowledge is gained will be an acquaintance with abstractions; if the example, or illustration alone is considered, the peril is of a memory of facts more or less temporary, or isolated. Government is essentially organic in nature and must be studied as an organism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Government of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Government of the United States Classic Reprint written by L. S. Shimmell and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the United States Many teachers entertain a conviction that most text-books for use in grammar and high-school grades, especially in the latter, require too much time for a thorough mastery of their contents. The number of subjects taught in schools Of all kinds and grades has greatly multiplied in recent years; but the school day is no longer than it was - in fact, it is shorter; nor has the school year been lengthened much, least of all in towns and cities. Consequently there is much complaint concerning overloaded courses Of study and crowded annual, weekly, and daily programs. There are those among educators, and others interested in educational improvement, who advocate a reduction in the number of subjects taught and a more intensive study Of the branches retained. It is not within the province Of this Preface to predict how the evil complained of will be remedied; but experience in the schoolroom has led many teachers to believe that less voluminous text-books would be at least a partial remedy. If the demands of the age require an increasingly greater number of subjects to be taught, it follows that less time must be given to each subject. But unless the text-books arc proportionately reduced in their scope, the attempt to get over them will result in skimming and Skipping, and consequently in an imperfect and evanescent knowledge of the contents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Federal State: A d104-Book in Civic for High Schools and Academies This Civics text-book is intended not only to describe the organization and work of the different American governments, but to make prominent the relation of the citizens to the governments and to each other. It has been thought that this could be done best by considering the subject from the standpoint of the State: that is, of the whole body of citizens considered as an organized unit rather than from the point of view of government or of the individual citizen. This made it necessary, first, to explain some of the more important principles of political science with practical applications; second, to show how the American Federal State became what it is; third, to describe the national, state (commonwealth), and local governments; and, fourth, to give some idea of the policies of the State in regard to great public questions and of the problems that confront it. In the historical portions of the book no attempt has been made to touch upon more than the salient events, each of which is considered not so much for any intrinsic worth as for the light that it may throw upon the development of nationality within the United States. For details and for subjects omitted altogether, the reader must be referred to the many excellent manuals of American History. The discussions upon government assume that the student needs a clear conception of the real character and actual working of our governments much more than he does a knowledge of the government as it is supposed to be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crisis, or Essays on the Usurpations of the Federal Government It cannot be too strongly impressed on the minds of our citizens, that the Government of the United States is a Government instituted for external, and not internal objects. This is the language of the Federalist, which is the best commentary on the Constitution, and': as such, its authority is acknowled ged in ou1° courts. The powers (says the Federalist) delegated by: the Constitution to the General? Government, are few and defined. T hose Which remain to the State° Governments are numerous and undefined. The former will be exer-r cised on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce, with which last the power of taxation Will, for the most part, be connected. The powers reserved to the States, extend to° all tlw objects Which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, -libe1°ties and properties, of the people, 'and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Federal Government and Education an Examination of the Federalization Movement, in the Light of the Educational Demands, of a Democracy It is a truism that every society tends to perpetuate itself; likewise that every cultivated society sees in education the chief means of its perpetuation and an indispensable mechan ism of social control. Under democratic forms this truth con veys a special meaning. Democracy has an abiding faith in education. Its very existence depends upon a wide diffusion of knowledge among its members. Its mainstay is a moral, social, and educated electorate. Where ignorance thrives, free institutions must inevitably fail. Autocracy thrives where minds are held in bondage.
