Book excerpt: The present study is an attempt to understand the problem of Maoist insurgency in Nepal since its inception to the withdrawal of the insurgency and the Maoist joining the political mainstream. The Maoist decision in 2006 to join the multi party democracy has not only given a new dimension to Nepali politics but it also raises a number of questions of academic interest. Why did Maoist take a U-turn? What are the problems and prospects of republican state and inclusive democracy in Nepal? How does the Maoist look at their political future in the upcoming political system of Nepal? These are the issues that his book has tried to focus upon. The study runs into seven chapter viz. COMMUNIST MOVEMENT IN NEPAL: HISTORICO-POLITICAL CONTEXT " A MOVEMENT IN THE MAKING PARTIES, GOVERNANCE AND POLITICS BETWEEN 1990-95 " MAOIST IDEOLOGY, ORGANIZATION AND STRATEGY " MAOIST SUPPORT BASES, FACTORS AND FORCES " GROWTH OF MAOIST MOVEMENT " MAOIST MOVEMENT AND HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUES " TAKING A 'U' TURN: MAOISTS JOINNING THE POLITICAL MAINSTREAM " The study is designed to discuss the Maoist problems in their total perspective: from its emergence to their joinning the mainstream politics and afterwards. It is hoped that the book will be useful to both academics and the general readers.

Book Building the New American Economy

Download or read book Building the New American Economy written by Jeffrey D. Sachs and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influential economist offers a persuasive strategy for a more just and sustainable economy—with a forward by Bernie Sanders. The New York Times has said that Jeffrey D. Sachs is “probably the most important economist in the world.” Now, in a book that combines impassioned manifesto with a plan of action, Sachs charts a path to move America toward sustainable development. Sustainable development is a holistic approach to public policy that unifies economic, social, and environmental objectives. By focusing too much on short-term economic growth, the United States has neglected rising inequality and dire environmental threats—all while putting our long-term economic growth at risk. Sachs explores issues that have captivated national discourse, including infrastructure, trade deals, energy policy, the proper size and role of government, the national debt, and income inequality. In accessible language, he illuminates the forces at work in each case and presents specific policy solutions. His argument rises above the stagnation of partisanship to envision a brighter way forward both individually and collectively. “Sachs demonstrates expertise on vastly different policy fields and makes a convincing case that abdicating the toxic intersection of militarism and exceptionalism is key to building a brighter future.”—Global Policy Journal

Book Reclaiming the Nation

Download or read book Reclaiming the Nation written by Sam Moyo and published by Pluto Press. This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compares the trajectories of states and societies in Africa, Asia and Latin America under neoliberalism, a time marked by serial economic crises, escalating social conflicts, the re-militarisation of North-South relations and the radicalization of social and nationalist forces. Sam Moyo and Paris Yeros bring together researchers and activists from the three continents to assess the state of national sovereignty and the challenges faced by popular movements today. They show that global integration has widened social and regional inequalities within countries, exacerbated ethnic, caste, and racial conflicts, and generally reduced the bureaucratic capacities of states to intervene in a defensive way. Moreover, inequalities between the countries of the South have also widened. These structural tensions have all contributed to several distinct political trajectories among states: from fracture and foreign occupation, to radicalization and uncertain re-stabilization. This book re-draws the debate on the political economy of the contemporary South and provides students of international studies with an important collection of readings.
