Book Organizational Communication

Download or read book Organizational Communication written by Cynthia Stohl and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1995-04-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recipient of the 1995 Best Book Award from the Organizational Communication division of the Speech Communication Association "I have just finished reading Organizational Communication. This is a magnificent piece of work bringing together current and past scholarship to form a persuasive argument for awareness. I will bring this work to the attention of a graduate class I′m teaching on organizational change and team building. . . . Above all, I recommend it to instructors of organizational communication." --William Gorden, Kent State University The lines between our personal and professional lives are blurred--naturally, one affects the other. Organizational Communication is the first book on the subject to take into account the personal context we bring into an organization. In addition to the connections between home life, social life, and professional activities, author Cynthia Stohl asserts that we must pay close attention to the linkages that individuals develop and maintain within their organizational contexts. Each chapter illustrates the ways in which today′s changing social patterns, the increasing diversity of the workforce, the introduction of new communication technologies, and the challenges of global integration and competition create organizational and interpersonal networks that are intricately interwoven and complex. By reframing the network metaphor, the author challenges us to examine the ways in which organizational communication is always embedded in, and influenced by, overlapping systems of relationships. Organizational Communication is the ideal text for courses in organizational communication that focus on the organization as an integrated aspect of our lives, our culture, and our global society.

Book Communication in Interpersonal Relationships

Download or read book Communication in Interpersonal Relationships written by Donald P. Cushman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1985-06-30 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses communication principles, processes, and skills from four different perspectives by explaining four related propositions. First, human communication is guided by socially established rules, the knowledge of which allows interacting persons to exert influence over the outcome of their interactions. Second, self concepts are formed and sustained in our interactions with others. Third, the formation of sustained interpersonal relations depends upon the attraction resulting from reciprocal self concept support. And fourth, organizations and the cultural system provide the parameters within which self concepts and interpersonal relations are formed. The implications of these propositions are examined in chapters two through ten. The authors develop their system in terms of results. What patterns of communication—what patterns of signal exchange—increase the probability of the development of affective relationship? What patterns erode interpersonal systems or prevent them from forming? The book also examines patterns of communication within task-oriented organizations and in situations involving cultural differences.

Book Introduction to Communication Studies

Download or read book Introduction to Communication Studies written by Robert Alan Brookey and published by Cognella Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication Theory: Traditional and Contemporary Readings introduces students to foundational works in the discipline, yet includes the exciting contemporary research which is producing new knowledge about the way humans communicate. This anthology has a fresh approach to the Communication Theory survey class. Rather than giving the usual brief, broad overview of a large number of theories, readings in Communication Theory focus on traditional and contemporary touchstones that have made significant contributions to the field of communication. The book provides students with theoretical and methodological exemplars of communication research, and allows students to learn about these exemplars from the original sources. While focusing on specific readings and their impact on how communication is studied, the book takes an interdisciplinary approach to the actual reading selections. These include readings on rhetoric, media studies, interpersonal, small group and organizational communication. The material addresses topics ranging from relationship development to video-games. Selections include the work of Charles R. Berger, Richard J. Calabrese, Karlyn Kohrs Campbell, John Fiske, Marie Hochmuth Nicols, Sarah Tracey and Erik King Watts. Communication Theory: Traditional and Contemporary Readings gives students a well-rounded, thorough, and engaging introduction to the topic. Robert Alan Brookey Ph.D., University of Minnesota, is a Professor in the Department of Communication at Northern Illinois University where he teaches classes in rhetoric and media, as well as an Introduction to Communication Studies course for which this book is designed. He has published two books and over 25 articles and book chapters. His most recent book, Hollywood Gamers: Digital Convergence in the Film and Video Game Industries was published by Indiana University Press. He has served on the editorial boards of Critical Studies in Media Communication, The Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, and The Western Journal of Communication. Betty H. La France Ph.D., Michigan State University is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Northern Illinois University where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in communication theory, research, and interpersonal communication. She is a communication scientist whose expertise is in social influence. Her specific interest area is the way intimacy is communicated in interpersonal relationships including those of a sexual nature. This anthology is an expression of her expertise, as well as a re-envisioning of the applicability of communication theory in daily life. Her publications have appeared in academic journals such as Communication Monographs, Communication Quarterly, Southern Communication Journal, Communication Reports, and Communication Studies.

Book Interpersonal Communication in Organizations

Download or read book Interpersonal Communication in Organizations written by Rudi Klauss and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the premise that effective communication takes place when others respond appropriately and all derive mutual satisfaction. The book is written from a perceptual perspective; that is, with a constant awareness of the interwoven nature of the relationship between the processes of communication and perception. Just as it is our perceptions of others that determine what and how we communicate with them, so too, it is their image of us that determines the success of the interaction as well as the potential for mutual growth.
