  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2002-08-17
  • ISBN : 0309083486

Download or read book Visual Impairments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-17 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When children and adults apply for disability benefits and claim that a visual impairment has limited their ability to function, the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) is required to determine their eligibility. To ensure that these determinations are made fairly and consistently, SSA has developed criteria for eligibility and a process for assessing each claimant against the criteria. Visual Impairments: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits examines SSA's methods of determining disability for people with visual impairments, recommends changes that could be made now to improve the process and the outcomes, and identifies research needed to develop improved methods for the future. The report assesses tests of visual function, including visual acuity and visual fields whether visual impairments could be measured directly through visual task performance or other means of assessing disability. These other means include job analysis databases, which include information on the importance of vision to job tasks or skills, and measures of health-related quality of life, which take a person-centered approach to assessing visual function testing of infants and children, which differs in important ways from standard adult tests.

Book The Legibility of Serif and Sans Serif Typefaces

Download or read book The Legibility of Serif and Sans Serif Typefaces written by John T. E. Richardson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides a detailed and up-to-date account of the relevant literature on the legibility of different kinds of typefaces, which goes back over 140 years in the case of reading from paper and more than 50 years in the case of reading from screens. It describes the origins of serif and sans serif styles in ancient inscriptions, their adoption in modern printing techniques, and their legibility in different situations and in different populations of readers. It also examines recent research on the legibility of serif and sans serif typefaces when used with internet browsers, smartphones and other hand-held devices. The book investigates the difference in the legibility of serif typefaces and sans serif typefaces when they are used to produce printed material or when they are used to present material on computer monitors or other screens and it explores the differences in readers’ preferences among typefaces. The book’s main focus is on the psychology of reading, but there are clear implications for education and publishing. Indeed, the book can be read with benefit by anyone concerned with communicating with others through written text, whether it is printed on paper or displayed on computer screens.

Book The Relationship of an IPad a Video Magnifier and Large Print Text with Oral Reading Outcomes for Children with Low Vision

Download or read book The Relationship of an IPad a Video Magnifier and Large Print Text with Oral Reading Outcomes for Children with Low Vision written by Rosemary L. Nave Stawasz and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low vision may cause a decrease in visual performance and interfere with daily functioning, especially reading print or text materials. Reading standard text can be particularly challenging for students with low vision in an educational setting and can reduce oral reading rates. Students with low vision may use large print or low vision devices for reading. Limited evidence currently exists to compare oral reading outcomes across various reading media for children with low vision. The purpose of this exploratory project was to examine oral reading rate, fluency, and comprehension among children with low vision when using an iPad, a video magnifier, and large print text. There were three participants with low vision with one student in third grade and two students in fourth grade. This study used a repeated acquisition single-subject research design. A pretest and posttest measure was given using the Neale Analysis of Reading Ability (NARA). Eighteen different oral reading assessment passages at one's independent reading level were administered to all participants over six weeks. All participants used an iPad, a video magnifier, and large print text to read different passages. Data for each child was analyzed by examining and comparing the oral reading measures within and across conditions. The visual analysis determined that a functional relation did not exist between using the iPad, video magnifier, or large print text on oral reading rate, fluency, and comprehension. The results, limitations, and implications for practitioners are discussed.

Book The Effects of Light Colour and Print Size on Reading Speed in the Visually Impaired

Download or read book The Effects of Light Colour and Print Size on Reading Speed in the Visually Impaired written by Elliott Morrice and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading is an essential component of daily life and it can be one of the most difficult tasks faced by individuals with low vision. A variety of factors, e.g., magnification, print-size, lighting, and colour, have been shown to improve reading speeds in the visually impaired, but there is no gold standard measure that can be used to assess optimal colour and illumination to facilitate reading. Increased print-size and luminance have consistently been shown to improve reading speed, and improved lighting has also been shown to improve the overall quality of life of the visually impaired. Conversely, colour manipulation, e.g., different coloured lighting, lens filters, plastic overlays, are controversial in their utility as there is contradictory evidence for their efficacy at improving reading speed. Additionally, there is a lack of research in the field examining at how both lighting and colour can be manipulated simultaneously, at various print-sizes, to examine their impact on reading speed in both the visually and non-visually impaired. Consequently, improved luminance and increased print-size are standard practices in low vision rehabilitation (LVR), however, the use of colour in LVR is likely to be more nuanced, individualistic, and/or not adequately assessed. Unfortunately, in the field of LVR there is no accepted and validated gold standard measure that can be used to determine optimal colour and illumination to facilitate reading at various print-sizes. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation is to examine the effects of colour, illumination, and print-size on reading, and to compare/contrast the efficacy of novel assistive technology devices that may be used in the context of LVR to determine optimal colour and illumination to facilitate reading.

Book Encyclopedia of Perception

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Perception written by E. Bruce Goldstein and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2010 with total page 1281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the ease with which we perceive, many people see perception as something that "just happens." However, even seemingly simple perceptual experiences involve complex underlying mechanisms, which are often hidden from our conscious experience. These mechanisms are being investigated by researchers and theorists in fields such as psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, computer science, and philosophy. A few examples of the questions posed by these investigations are, What do infants perceive? How does perception develop? What do perceptual disorders reveal about normal functioning? How can information from one sense, such as hearing, be affected by information from another sense, such as vision? How is the information from all of our senses combined to result in our perception of a coherent environment? What are some practical outcomes of basic research in perception? These are just a few of the questions this encyclopedia will consider, as it presents a comprehensive overview of the field of perception for students, researchers, and professionals in psychology, the cognitive sciences, neuroscience, and related medical disciplines such as neurology and ophthalmology.
