Book excerpt: Daphne Pratt presents a medley of Krio folktales, original poems, proverbs and other features of the language, as well as a teaching manual on how to read and write Sierra Leone Krio. From the last quarter of the 18th century, for about 150 years, Krio was mostly only a spoken language, and when attempts were made at writing it, there was no standardised orthography, so writers wrote it differently, each one making up his or her own method. However, since 1984, there has been a standardised Krio orthography recognised and recommended by Sierra Leone's Ministry of Education. A Krio-English dictionary compiled by Clifford N. Fyle and Eldred D. Jones was published by the Oxford University Press in 1980. The new testament of the Bible had been published in the 1980's, and the complete Bible in Krio was published in 2013. Krio has been taught in all government secondary schools since 1996 when the Lekon secondary text books in Krio were published. The Krio dictionary, the Krio text books used in schools, and the Krio Bible are all written in the standardised Krio approved by the Ministry of Education. A guide to reading and writing Krio is included in this publication for those who already understand and speak Krio fairly well, but are not confident in reading or writing the standardised Krio. It is hoped that all who wish to write Krio, will learn and strive to use the approved standardised Krio, to maintain the uniformity which prevails in written languages.

Book excerpt: Cultural creolization, métissage, hybridity, and the in-between spaces of postcolonial thought are now fundamental terms of reference within contemporary critical thought. Entwisted Tongues explores the sociohistorical and cultural basis for writing in creole languages from a comparative framework. The rise of self-defining literatures in Atlantic creoles offers parallels with the development of national literatures elsewhere, but the status of creole languages imposes particular conditions for literary creation. After an introduction to the history of the term creole, Entwisted Tongues surveys the history of the languages which are its focus: the Crioulo of Cape Verde, Sierra Leone Krio, Surinamese Sranan, Papiamentu (spoken in the Netherlands Antilles), and the varieties of French-based Kreyol in the Caribbean. The chapter Deep Speech turns around a trope ubiquitous in creoles, one conveying the sense that their authentic registers are at the furthest remove from the high cultures with which they are in contact; Diglossic Dilemma explores the contradictions inherent in this trope. The remaining analysis explores numerous nooks and crannies of these marginal but fascinating literatures, submitting that creoles and literature in them are prima facie evidence of the human will to articulate speech and verbal art, even in the face of slavery, oppression and penury.

It is an offshoot of 19th century Krio (Sierra Leone) and shares many characteristics with West African relatives like Nigerian Pidgin, Cameroon Pidgin, and Ghanaian Pidgin English, as well as with the English-lexifier creoles of the insular and continental Caribbean. This comprehensive description presents a detailed analysis of the grammar and phonology of Pichi. It also includes a collection of texts and wordlists. Pichi features a nominative-accusative alignment, SVO word order, adjective-noun order, prenominal determiners, and prepositions. The language has a seven-vowel system and twenty-two consonant phonemes. Pichi has a two-tone system with tonal minimal pairs, morphological tone, and tonal processes.
