Book excerpt: In this volume—the first complete history of Aramaic from its origins to the present day—Holger Gzella provides an accessible overview of the language perhaps most well known for being spoken by Jesus of Nazareth. Gzella, one of the world’s foremost Aramaicists, begins with the earliest evidence of Aramaic in inscriptions from the beginning of the first millennium BCE, then traces its emergence as the first world language when it became the administrative tongue of the great ancient Near Eastern empires. He also pays due diligence to the sacred role of Aramaic within Judaism, its place in the Islamic world, and its contact with other regional languages, before concluding with a glimpse into modern uses of Aramaic. Although Aramaic never had a unified political or cultural context in which to gain traction, it nevertheless flourished in the Middle East for an extensive period, allowing for widespread cultural exchange between diverse groups of people. In tracing the historical thread of the Aramaic language, readers can also gain a stronger understanding of the rise and fall of civilizations, religions, and cultures in that region over the course of three millennia. Aramaic: A History of the First World Language is visually supplemented by maps, charts, and other images for an immersive reading experience, providing scholars and casual readers alike with an engaging overview of one of the most consequential world languages in history.

Book The Original Aramaic Gospel of John in Plain English

Download or read book The Original Aramaic Gospel of John in Plain English written by Rev. David Bauscher and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the Gospel of John translated from the Aramaic text of the 1905 Syriac Peshitta New Testament, published by the British and United Bible Societies. Aramaic was the language of Jesus and his countrymen of Israel, as well as that of neighboring Syria, Persia, Asia, and all Jewish colonies throughout the known world. The Peshitta has a long tradition among Syrian and Assyrian (Iraqi and Lebanese) Christians as being the original text of the New Testament written by the Apostles and Evangelists of Jesus in the first century AD. Mel Gibson's film, The Passion of The Christ presented an Aramaic script for most of the dialogue of Jesus and the Apostles and other Jews, which added realism, historic accuracy and power to the film. Read this Gospel translated directly from inspired John's Aramaic words given by Rucha d'Qoodsha (The Spirit of Holiness) presenting The Lord Messiah Yeshua as Jehovah of Hosts- The Living God of Heaven and Creator of the universe, and according to the words which he himself spoke.

Book Studies in Aramaic Poetry c 100 B C E c 600 C E

Download or read book Studies in Aramaic Poetry c 100 B C E c 600 C E written by Rodrigues Pereira and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paucity of material, which has limited the study of Aramaic for too long, is gradually being alleviated. An ever growing body of well-edited texts is being made available to the scholarly world. These publications have provoked a number of important and penetrating linguistical and grammatical studies. Generally, however, corresponding literary studies of these texts are still lacking. The present work is an attempt to add a literary approach to the earlier analyses. The study deals with Aramaic poetry of the period between c. 100 B.C.E. and c. 600 C.E. The discussion of the textual material is organized in a number of levels, one superimposed upon the other. The basis is formed by a close exegetical and literary reading of the poems to elucidate essential elements of content, style and form. Particular attention is paid to structure and composi tion as a function of the content of the poems, and to the use made by the poets of stylistic devices as structural elements.
