Book Experience Reason and the Crisis of the Republic Volume 2

Download or read book Experience Reason and the Crisis of the Republic Volume 2 written by Gilbert Null and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-29 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience, Reason, and the Crisis of the Republic is a four-part realist polemic against nominalism, relativism, and nihilism in two volumes. This second volume’s philosophy of language is a noetic modal semantics of languages encrypting intentional contents of experiences and the realist metaphysic of experience and reason applied by its historical and political analysis of the 21st Century crisis of European and American politics and culture. It argues that the contemporary crisis is symptomatic of the dominance of nominalist alternatives to the realist premises of Husserl’s metaphysic of experience and reason, that our experiences of ourselves and others include values, and that there are natural rights which (unlike civil entitlements) are God-given. It uses the modal logic of experience to prove that God exists, and then designs and seeks realist sociologists to implement empirical studies of political and economic consequences of nominalist metaphysical premises since 1912.

Book excerpt: This paper presents an assessment of the level of observance of the Basel Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision (BCPs) in China. The China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) has maintained its momentum in regulation and supervision in the face of exceptional growth in scale and increasing complexity of the banking system. The CBRC has also achieved a high degree of compliance with the BCPs. However, several dimensions of credit risk, including treatment of problem assets, concentration risk and related party exposures have aspects in which they lag international best practices and standards. Failure to resolve these issues may hamper the CBRC in its task of assessing the nature and scale of credit risk in the system and within individual institutions.

Download or read book Public Reason written by Fred M. Frohock and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this meditation on the different ways in which contemporary society construes the notion of political reason, Fred M. Frohock offers an alternative to the merit forms of reasoning prominent in liberal democracies. He argues that divisive issues such as abortion and physician-assisted suicide resist rational closure: reasonable individuals often reach different and contradictory conclusions. The temptation is to abandon reason and depict governing as an exercise of pure power. What resources do we have, Frohock asks, to develop a version of public reason which can succeed even in the deep pluralism anticipated in democratic practices? Frohock makes a provocative argument: the effects of divisive beliefs can be mitigated with a version of public reason defined as mediated speech acts. These acts are dialogues on the model of a guided conversation in which collective terms dominate simple merit adjudication. This type of public reasoning requires a survey of considerations beyond the merits of the case at hand. Frohock's book combines theory and illustrative cases to present an unusually broad survey of public reasoning in which abstract arguments are developed in the context of highly charged contemporary issues.

Book Proclus Commentary on Plato s Republic

Download or read book Proclus Commentary on Plato s Republic written by and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-12 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The commentary on Plato's Republic by Proclus (d. 485 CE), which takes the form of a series of essays, is the only sustained treatment of the dialogue to survive from antiquity. This three-volume edition presents the first complete English translation of Proclus' text, together with a general introduction that argues for the unity of Proclus' Commentary and orients the reader to the use which the Neoplatonists made of Plato's Republic in their educational program. Each volume is completed by a Greek word index and an English-Greek glossary that will help non-specialists to track the occurrence of key terms throughout the translated text. The second volume of the edition presents Proclus' essays on the tripartite soul and the virtues, female philosopher rulers, and the metaphysics and epistemology of the central books of the Republic. The longest of the essays in Volume II interprets the nature and significance of the 'marriage number' whose miscalculation leads to the degeneration of the ideal city-state.

Book The Teleology of Action in Plato s Republic

Download or read book The Teleology of Action in Plato s Republic written by Andrew Payne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many discussions of ancient philosophy, teleology is acknowledged as an important theme. How do we act for a particular end or purpose? One common answer describes humans as acting with the intention of achieving a goal. A person selects particular actions with the thought that these actions will lead to that goal. Andrew Payne accepts that this is one good answer to our question but proposes that it is not the only one. In Plato's Republic, Socrates appeals to a different understanding of how humans act for the sake of ends as they live together in political communities and pursue knowledge. As they carry out activities that are necessary for human flourishing, their actions can produce unintended results that signal the full completion of human capacities. For example, performing the actions of a just individual can help promote the establishment of a just society as an unintended result. Such unintended results qualify as ends or purposes of human action. This volume fully explores this functional teleology of action in Plato's Republic.

Download or read book Acting for the Common Good written by Michael J. McGrath and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-08-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goods that we pursue in our lives are for us, first and foremost, goods that are particular and personal, and thus goods that are immediate to our attention. Not readily apparent to us are goods necessary for the flourishing of our lives but that can be attained by us only in consort with others and thus realized only through collective action. Such goods are common goods. The wider the good, the more extensive must be the human cooperation to realize the good. A stable, orderly society and a habitable planetary environment are common goods that can be realized only in and through the cooperation of all for the benefit of all. That all contribute to the shared good of the whole is a matter of justice—social justice. Acting for the Common Good undertakes the study of social justice in light of the common good—this from the viewpoint of Catholic social teaching, which draws upon the tradition of the common good that is articulated classically in the philosophy of Aristotle and the theology of Thomas Aquinas and in the modern-day social thought and authoritative teachings of the Catholic Church.

Book Revolution and the Republic

Download or read book Revolution and the Republic written by Jeremy Jennings and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolution and the Republic provides a new and wide-ranging interpretation of political thought in France from the eighteenth century to the present day. At its heart are the dramatic and violent events associated with the French Revolution of 1789 and the birth of the First Republic in 1792. For the next two centuries, writers in France struggled to make sense of these and subsequent events in French revolutionary history, producing a rich and perceptive analysis of the nature of republican government. But, as Revolution and the Republic shows, these important debates were not limited to the narrow confines of politics and to the writing of constitutions. Such was their significance that they occupied a central place in discussions about religion, science, philosophy, commerce, and the writing of history. They also shaped arguments about the character of France and the French nation as well as polemics about the role of intellectuals in French society. Moreover, they continue to be of importance in France today as the country faces the challenges posed by globalisation, multiculturalism, and the reform of the welfare state. Integrating the perspectives of intellectual history, political theory, social and cultural history, and political economy, Jeremy Jennings has written a study of political ideas that appeals to all those interested in the history of modern France and Europe more generally.
