Book excerpt: Re-conceptualizing Underrepresented Racial Minority Entrepreneurs gathers the voices of the Black American and Latino American entrepreneurs as collected by racial minority entrepreneurship scholars. The monograph has three primary goals: (1) provide a historical context of Underrepresented Racial Minority (URM) entrepreneurs - specifically Black American and Latino-Americans - illustrating their evolution, and contribution to the growth and development of the U.S. economy; (2) start a discussion of the U.S.-based racial minority entrepreneur that is unique from the immigrant entrepreneur; and (3) include in the academic discussion of the entrepreneur the voices of the URM entrepreneur as collected by the URM researcher.This monograph sets a definition of the racial minority entrepreneur, which is unique from the ethnic entrepreneur thus providing a new definition of the URM entrepreneur. The authors proceed to provide a historical overview of the distinct contributions URM entrepreneurs have made - specifically to the development of the U.S. and their present-day economic impact. Next, a systematic literature review identifies 66 empirical studies that focus on U.S.-based URM entrepreneurs. This literature review provides a qualitative analysis of URM entrepreneurs and offers suggestions for future research.

Book excerpt: This volume examines the involvement of minority- or women-owned businesses in technology-based research, with particular focus on the differences in research outcomes in achieving commercialization. Specifically, the authors empirically investigate the correlation between technologies from projects funded through the Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and the minority or gender demographics of the owners of the businesses conducting the research. This study offers an opportunity to not only examine public-sector agencies’ investments in research, but also to investigate if there are race and/or gender gaps in such business’ participation in innovative activities. It also provides a means to understand innovation by minorities and women in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Investments in fundamental science and technology research and investments in human capital through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education are important building blocks of innovation. Two methods of fueling innovation are to 1) accelerate the commercialization of federally funded research and 2) ensure opportunities for underrepresented minorities and women in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Despite this understanding, there is still a disparity in the rates of educated men and women in STEM fields participating in entrepreneurship. Moreover, the link between underrepresentation of minorities and women across STEM fields correlates with entrepreneurial entry and performance. This book expands on these findings and estimates the probability that (1) a funded research project reaches completion, (2) the developed technology is commercialized, and finally (3) the commercialized technology is successful in the marketplace (i.e., the business gained revenue and market share from the technology).

Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. Using firm-level data from railroad, airline, and cruise ship companies, the central questions addressed in this book are- why and how did race-gender hierarchies get created, maintained, legitimized, and challenged on trains, airplanes, and cruise ships? The author focuses on employers' role in producing inequality among workers by examining management’s actions and their own expressed race-gender ideology regarding service workers in Pullman Railroad Company (1860s to 1960s), the four major U.S. airlines (1930s to 1970s), and U.S.-owned cruise companies (1970s to 2000s). In addition to being driven by the profit motive, these men made hiring decisions that reflected their own stated beliefs about race, gender, and nationality. In all three instances, company executives consciously decided to create a work environment that was hierarchically segregated along race and gender lines. Once employers decided to typecast a new job as “best-suited” for one group of people, they inscribed workers’ social identities on the performance of these jobs. Notably, White men were the only group never deemed naturally suited for serving others.
