Book Comic Books and the Cold War 1946 1962

Download or read book Comic Books and the Cold War 1946 1962 written by Chris York and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom holds that comic books of the post-World War II era are poorly drawn and poorly written publications, notable only for the furor they raised. Contributors to this thoughtful collection, however, demonstrate that these comics constitute complex cultural documents that create a dialogue between mainstream values and alternative beliefs that question or complicate the grand narratives of the era. Close analysis of individual titles, including EC comics, Superman, romance comics, and other, more obscure works, reveals the ways Cold War culture--from atomic anxieties and the nuclear family to communist hysteria and social inequalities--manifests itself in the comic books of the era. By illuminating the complexities of mid-century graphic novels, this study demonstrates that postwar popular culture was far from monolithic in its representation of American values and beliefs.

Download or read book Love Like Water Love Like Fire written by Mikhail Iossel and published by Bellevue Literary Press. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comedy and tragedy collide in stories of family life in Soviet Russia and the complexities of the immigrant experience “We can’t stop turning the pages of this book.” —Ilya Kaminsky, New York Times Book Review From the moment of its founding, the USSR was reviled and admired, demonized and idealized. Many Jews saw the new society ushered in by the Russian Revolution as their salvation from shtetl life with its deprivations and deadly pogroms. But Soviet Russia was rife with antisemitism, and a Jewish boy growing up in Leningrad learned early, harsh, and enduring lessons. Unsparing and poignant, Mikhail Iossel’s twenty stories of Soviet childhood and adulthood, dissidence and subsequent immigration, are filled with wit and humor even as they describe the daily absurdities of a fickle and often perilous reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Science Fiction--in both literature and film--has played a key role in the portrayal of the fears inherent in the Cold War. The end of this era heralds the need for a reassessment of the literary output of the forty-year period since 1945. Working through a series of key texts, American Science Fiction and the Cold War investigates the political inflections put on American narratives in the post-war decades by Cold War cultural circumstances. Nuclear holocaust, Russian invasion, and the perceived rise of totalitarianism in American society are key elements in the author's exploration of science fiction narratives that include Fahrenheit 451, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Dr. Strangelove.

This book was released on 2011-03-18 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to a time of unparalleled censorship, from the McCarthy trials, to book burning festivals in Nazi Germany, to the millions of poets and writers imprisoned or executed by the Soviet government, Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 offers a vision of the world in which the elimination of challenging ideas tears away at the fabric of free speech and society. This compelling edition offers readers a collection of eighteen essays that contextualize and expand upon the theme of censorship in Fahrenheit 451. The book includes an interview with Bradbury and also covers the author's life and work. Other discussions include contemporary perspectives on censorship, a discussion of when governments might need to restrict ideas, what we risk when we censor the internet, and the importance of libraries and access to books.
