Download or read book Environmental Toxicity Testing written by K. Clive Thompson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-02-05 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an integral component of environmental policy, it has become essential to regulate and monitor toxic substances. Past emphasis has been primarily on analytical approaches to the detection of specific, targeted contaminants, thus allowing chemical characterisation. However, toxicity testing or biological assessment is necessary for ecotoxicological evaluation, and this offers marked benefits and advantages that complement chemical analysis. Key issues to be addressed include identification of pertinent tests, reproducibility and robustness of these tests, and cost considerations. This book examines these issues and describes and explains the approaches that have been developed for environmental toxicity evaluations. Advantages, benefits and drawbacks of the strategies and methods are highlighted. Directed equally at ecotoxicologists, industrial chemists, analytical chemists and environmental consultants, this book is written in a way that will prove helpful to both new and experienced practitioners.

Download or read book Critical Resistance written by David Couzens Hoy and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2005-08-12 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book serves as both an introduction to the concept of resistance in poststructuralist thought and an original contribution to the continuing philosophical discussion of this topic. How can a body of thought that mistrusts universal principles explain the possibility of critical resistance? Without appeals to abstract norms, how can emancipatory resistance be distinguished from domination? Can there be a poststructuralist ethics? David Hoy explores these crucial questions through lucid readings of Nietzsche, Foucault, Bourdieu, Derrida, and others. He traces the genealogy of resistance from Nietzsche's break with the Cartesian concept of consciousness to Foucault's and Bourdieu's theories of how subjects are formed through embodied social practices. He also considers Levinas, Heidegger, and Derrida on the sources of ethical resistance. Finally, in light of current social theory from Judith Butler to Slavoj Zizek, he challenges "poststructuralism" as a category and suggests the term "post-critique" as a more accurate description of contemporary Continental philosophy. Hoy is a leading American scholar of poststructuralism. Critical Resistance is the only book in English that deals substantively with the topical concept of resistance in relation to poststructuralist thought, discussions of which have dominated Continental social thought for many years.

Download or read book Shays Rebellion written by David P. Szatmary and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shays' Rebellion is often dismissed in the history books as an isolated incident following the American Revolution. Sometimes, it's grudingly given credit for spurring the Constitution Convention. In this well-balanced book, David P. Szatmary devotes the time and study necessary to classify Shays' Rebellion as the historical watershed it truly is. Shays' Rebellion signified more than economically depressed New England farmers waging war on creditors; it marked the beginning of the end of the American subsistence farmer. This change in an accepted way of life was at least as painful as the birth of the new United States. Szatmary chronicles how international influences forced a change in how merchants, farmers and artisans interacted, and how the initial changes brought friction. The rebellion resulting from this friction in turn revealed how ineffective the Articles of Confederation were in dealing with a crisis that could destroy the country. Szatmary links the state's governments weakness to the Constitution by using newspaper and editorial accounts of the day to provide a well-rounded view of an overlooked milestone.
Download or read book MANAGING THE INVESTIGATIVE UNIT written by Daniel S. McDevitt and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing the investigative unit can be an extremely rewarding part of any law enforcement professional’s career, or it can be an absolute nightmare. The goal of this newly revised second edition is to continue to provide the investigative manager with the updated tools and techniques necessary to successfully manage the investigative unit. Many of these techniques and strategies were learned through trial and error. It begins with a look at the various elements of the investigative process. These elements include the basics of criminal investigations, the role of patrol in the investigative process, organizing the investigative unit, rank/position/status of investigators, selecting and supervising investigative personnel, developing new investigators, case management, managing confidential source programs, supervision of undercover personnel, raid and arrest planning, the qualifications for the undercover officer, and evaluating performance of personnel. Administrative considerations, such as managing confidential source programs and case management are examined in detail. The final sections of the book examines performance evaluation of investigative personnel, which differs greatly from the evaluation of patrol personnel. Investigative “marginal performers” are studied, and useful techniques for managing these individuals are provided. Methods of developing new investigators as well as mechanisms to train patrol personnel for potential assignment to investigations are also covered. In addition, the Appendices contains material and forms on responsibilities, time allocation, selection and application, case screenings, case reviews, referrals, fund and payment policy, operational plan, and evaluation design. The book will be useful for patrol officers or detectives who are interested in preparing themselves for supervisory or management positions.
