Book Diamonds in the Rough

Download or read book Diamonds in the Rough written by D. Bruce Means and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the monograph of the eastern diamondback rattlesnake by D. Bruce Means. Its publication is a culmination of over 40 years of long-term, in-depth study of the world's largest rattlesnake, Crotalus adamanteus. In the preface Means writes, "The limited biological knowledge available for this species is all the more amazing when one considers the economic impact of Crotalus adamanteus. Because of its large size and highly toxic venom, it is arguably the most dangerous venomous snake in the United States and Canada, accounting for more human mortality than any other species (Klauber 1972; Parrish 1980). Its ecological importance may be even more significant, however. The eastern diamondback is a major predator of the cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidus), a significant crop pest that is probably the most abundant rodent in the southeastern United States (Lowery 1974). Moreover, the eastern diamondback, which weighs up to about thirteen pounds (5.9 kilograms), is the largest cold-blooded terrestrial vertebrate living in the temperate zones of the earth (Means 1985)."

Book Handbook of Snakes of the United States and Canada

Download or read book Handbook of Snakes of the United States and Canada written by Albert Hazen Wright and published by Ithaca, N.Y. : Comstock Pub. Associates. This book was released on 1957 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years Albert Hazen Wright and Anna Allen Wright traveled extensively, attempting to observe every species of snake in its natural surroundings and collecting data and live specimens. Their exhaustive research resulted in a famous two-volume source book, first published in 1957. Abundantly and painstakingly illustrated by the authors, this personalized natural history organizes for ready reference a wealth of information on American and Canadian snakes. Jonathan A. Campbell, a leading expert on snakes, supplies an informative new foreword. Accounts of more than three hundred species and subspecies - accompanied by photographs, drawings, distribution maps, and keys - form the main part of the work. In the introductory section the Wrights cover names of snakes, range, size, longevity, distinctive characteristics, color, habitat, period of activity, breeding, ecdysis, food, venom and bite, enemies, and authorities. Generous excerpts from the authors' field journals give the reader a vivid feeling of some of the satisfactions and conclusions of their search. Albert Hazen Wright was Professor of Zoology, Emeritus, at Cornell University. Anna Allen Wright was a recognized authority on the ecology and natural history of amphibians and reptiles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am a snake. No, not a rattlesnake. I just look like one. I’m a gopher snake. One day an oily, filthy, fleshy human child crossed my path. As luck would have it, he knew the difference between a gopher snake and a rattlesnake. He has imprisoned me in a terrarium. His name is Gunnar. He calls me Crusher. He thinks I’m male. I’m not. He dropped in a dead mouse and hoped I’d eat it. I buried it. He then dropped in a live one, which he called “Breakfast.” I didn’t lay a coil on it. Gunnar thinks I’ll be his adoring pet. He’s wrong. In fact, I am planning my escape. I may take Breakfast with me. Crusher will charm readers in this entertaining, clever novel about a snake in captivity and how she turns the tables on her human captor.
