Book excerpt: Bharatanatyam is a dance with ancient origins that has been enjoyed both by practitioners and audiences alike for millennia. Dancer, teacher, and researcher Prakruti Prativadi now explains the purpose of Bharatanatyam and Indian aesthetic theory in Rasas in Bharatanatyam. In this easy-to-understand guide, Prativadi delves into the heart of the classical art of Bharatanatyam by explaining the objective of the dance, which are Rasas. These concepts are described through an engaging dialogue between a questioning student and wise teacher. Whether you are a seasoned dancer or an eager beginner, Rasas in Bharatanatyam illuminates the rich concepts and culture of Bharatanatyam. Prativadi goes back to original Sanskrit texts and treatises, such as the Natyashastra, to reveal the full meaning of this thoughtful and powerful form of expression. Prativadi explains Rasas (aesthetic experience) and their relationship to Abhinaya (emotive acting). With graphics, tables, illustrations, and photographs, she shows you the foundation of the dance and techniques to help you become a well-rounded practitioner. Prativadi also emphasizes the importance of learning the cultural context of the dance. Prativadi honors the dance's long cultural and spiritual roots. She discusses the philosophy and aesthetic theory that form the basis of every performance.

Book excerpt: When I look back, my life has been devoted to performing, choreography and above all, to the noble profession of teaching Bharatanatyam, sharing whatever knowledge I possess with my students.A child has to have an open mind when he/she goes to the Guru. To make the learning more fruitful and meaningful, the student embarks on a long and arduous journey from the exploration of self to the achievement of the pinnacle of glory.Achieving the goal is not as easy as it may seem. It requires immense dedication and hard work and no doubt, an inborn talent or aptitude for fine arts.Whenever a student joins the Dance Class, he or she wishes to have a book to fall back upon. It is always been a great task for me as a teacher to dictate or to write notes for each and every student so that he or she understands the theory of dance and also its practice. At that stage, even a simple movement appears complicated. Also, one question that is always asked of me is whether I could suggest a book, that would help the student in understanding the basics of dance. Also a guide book which would assist the senior students when they take up to teaching carrier. The basic purpose of this book is to present all the principles, methods and techniques of Bharatanatyam in a simple, systematic and comprehensive manner. It leads the student from the simple to the complex: introduction to the dance form, tala (time measure), gestures, feet positions, the dancer's workout orchestra and the main topics of the dance units, Adavus. The Advus have been explained in detail with complete illustrations. The pre-recorded audio and the video-cassette to assist in the practice is also available. Some speci

The book offers a visual representation of the Adavus with the help of stick diagrams in a sequential manner so that the beginners and practitioners can understand the finer points of each movement. The author has developed simple schematics to show the various moves, such as jump, stretch, turn, hit etc. The author endeavours to illustrate Adavus in a precise manner in this book. Classification and categorization of each step is the salient feature of this work. Gayathri Keshavan makes a humble effort to pass on the knowledge of this ancient and sacred art to the present and future generations of Bharata Natyam dancers.

Book Theatre and Its Other

Download or read book Theatre and Its Other written by Elisa Ganser and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Dance? What is Theatre? What is the boundary between enacting a character and narrating a story? When does movement become tinted with meaning? And when does beauty shine alone as if with no object? These universal aesthetic questions find a theoretically vibrant and historically informed set of replies in the oeuvre of the eleventh-century Kashmirian author Abhinavagupta. The present book offers the first critical edition, translation, and study of a crucial and lesser known passage of his commentary on the Nāṭyaśāstra, the seminal work of Sanskrit dramaturgy. The nature of dramatic acting and the mimetic power of dance, emotions, and beauty all play a role in Abhinavagupta’s thorough investigation of performance aesthetics, now presented to the modern reader.

Book The Retro Futurism of Cuteness

Download or read book The Retro Futurism of Cuteness written by Jen Boyle and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to conceive of a Hello Kitty Middle Ages or a Tickle Me Elmo Renaissance? The Oxford English Dictionary dates the first reference to "cute" in the sense of "attractive, pretty, charming" to 1834. More recently, Sianne Ngai has offered a critical overview of the cuteness of the twentieth-century avant-garde within the context of consumer culture. But if cuteness can get under the skin, what kinds of surfaces does it best infiltrate, particularly in the framework of historical forms, events, and objects that traditionally have been read as emergences around "big" aesthetics of formal symmetries, high affects, and resemblances? The Retrofuturism of Cuteness seeks to undo the temporal strictures surrounding aesthetic and affective categories, to displace a strict focus on commodification and cuteness, and to interrogate how cuteness as a minor aesthetics can refocus our perceptions and readings of both premodern and modern media, literature, and culture. Taking seriously the retro and the futuristic temporalities of cuteness, this volume puts in conversation projects that have unearthed remnants of a "cult of cute"-positioned historically and critically in between transitions into secularization, capitalist frameworks of commodification, and the enchantment of objects-and those that have investigated the uncanny haunting of earlier aesthetics in future-oriented modes of cuteness. The Latin acutus, the etymological root of cute, embraces the sharpened, the pointed, the nimble, the discriminating, and the piercing. But as Michael O'Rourke notes, cuteness evokes a proximity that is at once potentially invasive and contaminating and yet softening and transfiguring. Deploying cuteness as a mode of inquiry across time, this volume opens up unexpected lines of inquiry and unusual critical and creative aporias, from Christian asceticism, medieval cycle drama, and Shakespeare to manga, Bollywood, and Second Life. The projects collected here point to a spectrum of aesthetic-affective assemblages related to racial, ethnic, gender, sexual, and class dimensions that exceed or trouble our contemporary perceptions of such registers within object-subject and subject-object entanglements. Book excerpt: Harish Johari’s revelations on the lessons and predictions in this classic Indian epic • Examines the lessons of the main characters in the Mahabharata and how each symbolizes an aspect of human consciousness • Explains dharma in modern terms, shedding light on major events in our time • Contains a modern retelling of the Bhagavad Gita, the essence of Indian philosophy • Includes teachings on the relationship between energy, the elements, and the chakras and on the causes for war in this epic story • Compiled and Edited by Wil Geraets Harish Johari (1934-1999), the distinguished North Indian author and Tantric scholar, spent a lifetime studying the Mahabharata and the lessons it contains. Known the world over for its famous chapters on the story of the hero Arjuna and the Bhagavad Gita, this ancient epic is more than just stories. As Johari reveals, the Mahabharata’s teaching tales contain insight on justice and injustice, individual and cosmic consciousness, Indian philosophy, and the four eras of humankind, including our current era, the Kali Yuga. Based on numerous talks given by Johari, this book presents the deeper layers of the Mahabharata, revealing its wisdom and teachings in a contemporary and often entertaining way. Examining the lessons of the main characters and how each symbolizes an aspect of human consciousness, Johari explores the lives of Bhishma and Arjuna, the events in the Pandava and Kaurava families leading up to their battle at Kurukshetra, lesser-known stories such as the tale of Karna’s previous life as a demon, and a modern retelling of the Bhagavad Gita. Johari explains the complex concept of dharma in present-day language, shedding light on events unfolding in our current age, the Kali Yuga, and offers insights on the relationship between energy, the elements, and the chakras and on the causes for war in this epic story.
