Book Rare K Sup Decays in Flight

Download or read book Rare K Sup Decays in Flight written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E777 at the Brookhaven AGS has published a final branching ratio limit for the lepton family violating decay K →?+?+e− of 2.1 × 10−1° (90% C.L.). New results based on approximately 500 events of the G.I.M. suppressed decay K+ →?+e+e− have yielded a branching ratio of (2.75 {plus minus} 0.23 {plus minus} 0.13) × 10−7 assuming a vector interaction with, a form factor = 0.105 {plus minus} 0.035 {plus minus} 0.015. The branching ratio times decay probability for K° →?+ X°, ° → e+e− was found to less than 1.5 × 10−8 (99% C.L.) in the e+e− invariant mass range of 150 to 340 MeV/c. An approved second generation experiment sensitive to K+ →?+e− at the 10−12 level is discussed. 5 refs., 3 figs.

Book Overview of Rare K Decays

Download or read book Overview of Rare K Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The status and future prospects of searches for and studies of forbidden and highly suppressed K decays are reviewed. Here the author discusses three areas of recent activity in rare K decay. These are lepton-flavor violating decays, which are entirely forbidden in the Standard Model, K[sub S][yields][pi][sup+][pi][sup[minus]][pi][sup 0], which is of interest from the point of view of CP-violation, and'one loop' decays of the form K[sup 0, [+-]][yields] ([pi][sup 0, [+-]])l[bar l], that can throw light on Standard Model CP-violation and determine parameters such as V[sub td].

Book Experimental Studies of Rare K sup Decays

Book excerpt: Experiment E865 at the BNL AGS is a search for the lepton number violating decay K[sup+][r-arrow][pi][sup+][mu][sup+]e[sup[minus]] with an expected sensitivity of 3[times] 10[sup[minus]12]. The experimental apparatus involves a magnetic spectrometer with two Cerenkov counters, a calorimeter and a muon detector for particle identification. In addition, other rare K[sup+] decays are studied. The experiment has been collecting data since 1995, and preliminary results are presented.

Book RARE K DECAYS FROM EXPERIMENT E787

Download or read book RARE K DECAYS FROM EXPERIMENT E787 written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the latest results from experiment E787, at Brookhaven National Laboratory, on K[sup+][r-arrow][pi][sup+][nu][bar[nu]] and radiative K[sup+] decays. The result for K[sup+][r-arrow][pi][sup+][nu][bar[nu]] uses data collected in runs taken during 1995, 1996 and 1997. In addition, they discuss plans for future measurements of K[sup+][r-arrow][pi][sup+][nu][bar[nu]].

Book excerpt: The CKM experiment is a proposal to measure the branching ratio of the rare decay K[sup+][r-arrow][pi][sup+][nu][bar[nu]] at the Main Injector at Fermilab using a decay in flight technique. The goal is to observe[approx]100 events, for a Standard Model branching ratio of 1 x 10[sup[minus]10] with a background of less than 10 events.

Book Rare K decay Experiments

Download or read book Rare K decay Experiments written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been a proposal (accepted - E777) and a letter-of-intent to search for K .-->. .pi.mu.+e− to a branching ratio better than 10−11. This motivation is to test different types of lepton number conservation - specifically, there is a boson in technicolor models which would allow such decays at a level around 10−1°. This note discusses the E777 experiment, reasons for doing the experiment at the AGS, and the prospects for looking for even smaller branching ratios. A level of B.R. 4.8 x 10−9 (90% C.L.) for K+ .--. .pi.+.mu.+e− was achieved in a CERN experiment designed to study Ke4 decay. That experiment used a separated 8 x 104/pulse K+ beam with a PWC/spark chamber detector and no muon identification. E777 will use an unseparated beam with 2 x 107K/sup +//pulse, PWCs, and muon identification. Cherenkovs will be designed to not misidentify particles, at a reduced efficiency. For example, two counters will be filled with H2 gas at atmospheric pressure to identify electrons. This reduces delta-ray contamination, at a cost of reduced efficiency for identifying the electrons. They chose a K/sup +/ momentum of 6 Gev/c (and, thus, to do the experiment at the AGS) for good particle identification.

Book Searches for Very Rare Decays of Kaons

Download or read book Searches for Very Rare Decays of Kaons written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physics motivation for searches for very rare kaon decays, either forbidden or suppressed within the Standard Model, is briefly discussed. Simple arguments conclude that such searches probe possible new forces at a 200 TeV mass scale or constitute a precision test of the electroweak model. The examples of such processes are decays of K[sub L][sup O][yields][mu][sup[plus-minus]]e[sup[minus-plus]], K[sup[plus]][yields][pi][sup[plus]][mu][sup[plus]]e[sup[minus]], K[sub L][sup O][yields][mu][sup[minus]], and K[sup[plus]][yields][pi][sup[plus]][nu][bar[nu]]. We present the current experimental status and describe the new efforts to reach sensitivities down to 1 part in 10[sup 12]. The discussion is focused on the experimental program at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where intense beams make such studies possible.
