Book Rare Earths and Actinides in High Energy Spectroscopy

Download or read book Rare Earths and Actinides in High Energy Spectroscopy written by Christiane Bonnelle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique monograph covers recent theoretical and experimental results on the complex character of f electrons in materials containing lanthanides (rare earths) or actinides, such as alpha-cerium and delta-plutonium. It answers the urgent need for a general presentation of the body of experimental and theoretical results presently available in this challenging domain. Some of the fast developing applications of lanthanide and actinide materials are mentioned. Materials containing atoms with an open f shell have electronic and crystalline properties that are controlled by the localized or delocalized character of the f electrons. This book gives a theoretical discussion of the various spectroscopic methods that shed light on the character of the f electrons and on the connection between their localization and the properties of these materials. Part 1 covers the characteristics of the f electrons in atoms and solids and includes a discussion of the properties of lanthanides and actinides in connection with the f electrons. Part 2 describes the various spectroscopic methods that are used to establish the electronic distributions and energies of the states. Examples involve the determination of f electron distributions by high energy spectroscopy methods with separate treatment of the valence and core electrons. Part 3 concentrates on the theoretical treatment of electronic transitions involving f electrons and simulations of the lanthanide spectra, including comparison with the available experimental data. Part 4 discusses the localized or delocalized character of the f electrons in actinides and their compounds, including comparison (analogies & differences) between the 4f and 5f electron materials. This monograph should be of great value for researchers, academics and engineers working in the fields of high energy spectroscopy, electronic and nuclear science and technology, as well as materials involving rare earths and radio-elements.

Book Anomalous Rare Earths and Actinides

Download or read book Anomalous Rare Earths and Actinides written by J.X. Boucherle and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anomalous Rare Earths and Actinides: Valence Fluctuation and Heavy Fermions focuses on the characteristics, reactions, transformations, technologies, and processes involved in the study of anomalous rare earths and actinides. The selection first offers information on lanthanides and actinides and electronic structures in cerium monopnictides. Topics include rare earth metals with fluctuating valencies, 'normal' rare earth metals, and band calculation and Fermi surface. The text then elaborates on neutron scattering studies of anomalous rare earth compounds, including magnetic neutron scattering measurements, stability and localization of magnetic moments, and condensed state. The manuscript examines the transport properties of cerium monochalcogenides and pressure-volume relationships of cerium monochalcogenides and monopnictides. The text also ponders on the theory of anisotropic magnetic behavior in hybridizing actinide systems; band hybridization effects on indirect magnetic coupling of localized moments; and neutron scattering from transuranium materials. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the research on anomalous rare earths and actinides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lanthanides are of great importance for the electronic industries, this new book (from the EIBC Book Series) provides a comprehensive coverage of the basic chemistry, particularly inorganic chemistry, of the lanthanoid elements, those having a 4f shell of electrons. A chapter is describing the similarity of the Group 3 elements, Sc, Y, La, the group from which the lanthanoids originate and the group 13 elements, particularly aluminum, having similar properties. Inclusion of the group 3 and 13 elements demonstrates how the lanthanoid elements relate to other, more common, elements in the Periodic Table. Beginning chapters describe the occurrence and mineralogy of the elements, with a focus on structural features observed in compounds described in later chapters. The majority of the chapters is organized by the oxidation state of the elements, Ln(0), Ln(II), Ln(III), and Ln(IV). Within this organization the chapters are further distinguished by type of compound, inorganic (oxides and hydroxides, aqueous speciation, halides, alkoxides, amides and thiolates, and chelates) and organometallic. Concluding chapters deal with diverse and critically important applications of the lanthanoids in electronic and magnetic materials, and medical imaging.

Book Lanthanides Actinides Chemistry

Download or read book Lanthanides Actinides Chemistry written by Karl A. Gschneidner and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Handbook is the second of a three-volume set of reviews devoted to the interrelationships, similarities, differences, and contrasts of the lanthanide and actinide series of elements. In particular this book considers the comparisons of the chemistry of the lanthanide and actinide elements. The lanthanide and actinide elements present a multitude of challenging physical and chemical problems resulting from the involvement of open F-shell electronic configurations. This is made clear in the chapters composing these volumes which cover topics such as: the experimental and theoretical aspects of solution absorption and luminescence spectra to reveal similarities and differences in the two f-series; the methods and effectiveness of separation by solvent extraction, ion exchange and necessary accompanying reactions; the comparative thermochemical and oxidation-reduction properties of lanthanide and actinide materials; interrelationships and comparisons of the halides; an examination of the relative hydration and hydrolysis behaviors of the lanthanides and actinides.

This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical structure and bonding. The scope of the series spans the entire Periodic Table and addresses structure and bonding issues associated with all of the elements. It also focuses attention on new and developing areas of modern structural and theoretical chemistry such as nanostructures, molecular electronics, designed molecular solids, surfaces, metal clusters and supramolecular structures. Physical and spectroscopic techniques used to determine, examine and model structures fall within the purview of Structure and Bonding to the extent that the focus is on the scientific results obtained and not on specialist information concerning the techniques themselves. Issues associated with the development of bonding models and generalizations that illuminate the reactivity pathways and rates of chemical processes are also relevant. The individual volumes in the series are thematic. The goal of each volume is to give the reader, whether at a university or in industry, a comprehensive overview of an area where new insights are emerging that are of interest to a larger scientific audience.
