Book excerpt: 'Laurence Alison is one of my academic heroes. He does what every writer longs to do. He makes the difficult clear - without losing his rigour.' Malcolm Gladwell 'They are quietly revolutionising the study and practice of interrogation... Their findings are changing the way law enforcement and security agencies approach the delicate and vital task of gathering human intelligence.' Guardian Get what you want from even the most difficult characters All of us have to deal with difficult people. Whether we're asking our neighbour to move a fence or our boss for a pay rise, we can struggle to avoid arguments and get what we want. Laurence and Emily Alison are world leaders in forensic psychology, and they specialise in the most difficult interactions imaginable: criminal interrogations. They advise and train the police, security agencies, the FBI and the CIA on how to deal with extremely dangerous suspects when the stakes are high. After 30 years' work - and unprecedented access to 2,000 hours of terrorist interrogations - they have developed a ground-breaking model of interpersonal communication. This deceptively simple approach to handling any encounter works as well for teenagers as it does for terrorists. Now it's time to share it with the world. Rapport reveals that every interaction follows four styles: Control (the lion), Capitulate (the mouse), Confront (the Tyrannosaur) and Co-operate (the monkey). As soon as you understand these styles and your own goals you can shape any conversation at will. And you'll be closer to the real secret: how to create instant rapport.

Book The Art of Connecting

Download or read book The Art of Connecting written by Claire Raines and published by AMACOM. This book was released on 2006-05-12 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This useful resource reveals five core principles and presents corresponding, specific strategies for overcoming communications barriers and connecting effectively with anyone, regardless of professional, generational, ethnic, cultural, or other differences. In an increasingly diverse workplace, it’s more important and challenging than ever to communicate well. We must build bridges that cross our differences to connect our similarities. The Art of Connecting explains how the most skillful connectors can shift perspectives -- to see a situation from three points of view: “me,” “you,” and “them.” All the principles and strategies are brought to life through absorbing examples and scenarios, plus engaging descriptions of “masters of connection” -- like famed National Public Radio interviewer Terry Gross -- doing what they do. There is always a bridge. The Art of Connecting shows how to find it -- every time.

Book Reimagining Rapport

Download or read book Reimagining Rapport written by Zane Goebel and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2021-02-05 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection sketches the use of the term "rapport" within the fields of Anthropology, Sociology, Sociolinguistics, Applied Linguistics, and Linguistic Anthropology. Rather than leaving the term uncritiqued or simply conceptualised as a type of positive social relationship that needs to be formed between researcher and consultant before research can begin, the book invites us to: 1) think about how rapport has been constructed within a number of these disciplines; 2) see rapport as an emergent co-constructed social relationship that is built during situated multimodal encounters, and one that; and 3) see the interpretation of such social relationships as requiring a reflexive approach that historicizes semiotic resources and social relations. In reimagining rapport, readers are invited to reflect on the idea of rapport as theory, meta-methodology, and methodology"--

Book Handbook of Interpersonal Communication

Download or read book Handbook of Interpersonal Communication written by Gerd Antos and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpersonal communication (IC) is a continuous game between the interacting interactants. It is a give and take - a continuous, dynamic flow that is linguistically realized as discourse as an on-going sequence of interactants' moves. Interpersonal communication is produced and interpreted by acting linguistically, and this makes it a fascinating research area. The handbook, Interpersonal Communication , examines how interactants manage to exchange facts, ideas, views, opinions, beliefs, emotion, etc. by using the linguistic systems and the resources they offer. In interpersonal communication, the fine-tuning of individuals' use of the linguistic resources is continuously probed. The language used in interpersonal communication enhances social relations between interactants and keeps the interaction on the normal track. When interaction gets off the track, linguistic miscommunication may also destroy social relationships. This volume is essentially concerned with this fine-tuning in discourse, and how it is achieved among various interactant groups. The volume departs from the following fundamental questions: How do interpersonal relations manifest themselves in language? What is the role of language in developing and maintaining relationships in interpersonal communication? What types of problems occur in interpersonal communication and what kind of strategies and means are used to solve them? How does linguistically realized interpersonal communication interact with other semiotic modes? Interpersonal communication is seen and researched from the perspective of what is being said or written, and how it is realized in various generic forms. The current research also gives attention to other semiotic modes which interact with the linguistic modes. It is not just the social roles of interactants in groups, the possible media available, the non-verbal behaviors, the varying contextual frames for communication, but primarily the actual linguistic manifestations that we need to focus upon when we want to have a full picture of what is going on in human interpersonal communication. It is this linguistic perspective that the volume aims to present to all researchers interested in IC. The volume offers an overview of the theories, methods, tools, and resources of linguistically-oriented approaches, e.g. from the fields of linguistics, social psychology, sociology, and semiotics, for the purpose of integration and further development of the interests in IC., Topics e.g.: Orientation to interaction as primarily linguistically realized processes Expertise on theorizing and analyzing cultural and situational contexts where linguistic processes are realized Expertise on handling language corpora Expertise on theorizing and analyzing interaction types as genres Orientation to an integrated view of linguistic and non-linguistic participant activities and of how interactants generate meanings and interact with space Expertise on researching the management of the linguistic flow in interaction and its successfulness.
