Book excerpt: The "North Side" was employed in the Lake Erie smelt fishery operating from Port Dover, Ontario, and had been fishing on November 25. After landing the catch, the vesel was secured port side to the finger berth. A member of the crew switched on the shore power to the block heater in the diesel engine and left the propane heater stove pilot flame burning. The doors were not locked when the last man left at about 1700. During the night, the vessel caught fire and burned through its mooring ropes and drifted across the dock basin and ignited the diving support vessel "D-thunderball". At about 0415, the flames were observed, and the Port Dover Volunteer Fire Department was called. They extingusihed the fires and the two vessels remained afloat although they both suffered serious damage.
