Book excerpt: On January 31, 1986 the fishing vessel "Vellar" with a crew of two, left Victoria, British Columbia reportedly with a destination of the fishing grounds inside Barkley Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island; she should have arrived in Barkley Sound the next day, February 1. On February 14, a concerned citizen reported her overdue to the Rescue Co-ordination centre at Victoria as the vessel only had provisions for seven days on board. An intensive search was initiated immediatelyand some debris form the vessel was found close to the rocks some five cables northwards from Cape Beale. Her crew however, was never found.

Book excerpt: On the afternoon of Tuesday, December 3, 1985 the small fishing vessel "Medway Queen" was trawling at the entrance to Comox harbour on the east coast of Vancouver Island when the weather started to deteriorate from the south-east. The crew of two men began to haul in their nets and bring in the catch before the weather would worsen as a gale warning for the area had been broadcasted. As the wind was gusting to gale force and waves were increasing rapidly, the vessel fell broadside to the sea and was swamped from the stern by high waves. At approximately 1700, the vessel sank stern first. No 'Mayday' message was broadcast and whilst the owner was able to swim ashore, the deckhand lost his life in this accident. the vessel was declared a constructive total loss.

Book excerpt: Two lobster fishermen drowned in two separate accidents which occured in Nova Scotia on two different dates. The first accident, which took the life of Mr. Keating, occurred in Rocky Bay, Cape Breton, on July 6, 1985 and the second accident occurred two days later on July 6, 1985 in which Mr. Horne lost his life near Canso. Both fishermen were considered experience having been fishing for many years. Despite the fact that the circumstances surrounding the two accidents are different, there are, nevertheless, certain similarities in both instances. Both accidents occurred in sheltered waters, teh weather conditions were good and the seas relatively calm. None of the fishermen involved wore lifejackets. Had it not been for the prompt action of resuers in the second incident, two more persons may also have been drowned.

Book excerpt: The "Eastland " departed Prince Rupert for the fishing grounds on July 20, 1985, and on July 23 was fishing close inshore in Boat Harbour, on the west coast of Dundas Island, B.C. While hauling in the seine net with a small catch of salmon, a shipside davit fitted with tackle and used in the process came loose, swung inboard, and struck a crew member in the chest. The crew member collapsed and died shortly thereafter as a result of the impact of the blow he had received. This report deals with this mishap.

Book excerpt: The Panamanian vessel "Savic" was anchored off Lanoraie, Quebec, waiting for further instructions regarding her loading and/or trip to the scrapyard. On July 20, 1986 a crew member disappeared after jumping from a life float into the river whilst on a pleasure trip from the anchored vessel to a local beach. Immediately rescue efforts by the four remaining persons on board the life float were unsuccessful. The crew member was not wearing a lifejacket but was reported to be a good swimmer. Despite and extensive search of the immediate area, the body was not found until five days later.

The "Vivian O" was recovered and is considered aconstructivetotal loss with an insured value of approximately $40,000.

Book excerpt: On the morning of May 22, 1986, the crabber "L'Oceanique" was steaming at slow speed while setting crab pots (traps) on Bradelle Bank. At about 1045, a crab pot weighing 68 kg (150 lb) , was being set, and had just been released over the side fo the vessel, when a crewmember had his right leg caught in a loop of the rope which was attached to the pot and was running out over the side at a considerable speed as the pot fell to the bottom. The victim was quickly lifted by the rope (pot warp) and pulled over the bulwark and into the sea. The crew of the crabber made many attempts to rescue the victim, but they were unsuccessful and he disappeared below the surface of the water. The "Oceanique" stood by in the position for about one hour without again catching sight of the victim who is still listed as missing and presumed drowned.

The lobster fishing season in that area had ended and the purpose of the voyage was to retrieve traps and associated gear and transport them, together with any catch, back to her home port of L'Archeveque. This report deals with the swamping of the above lobster boat and lost of the life of its operator.

Book excerpt: The fishing vessel "Jean B" departed Port Hardy Government wharf at 0200 on February 19, 1986 bound for Bella Bella, B.C., with cargo of approximately 7 tons of potatoes and vegetables in sacks. The weather on departure was calm but a gale warning was forecast for the Queen Charlotte Strait later in the day. At 0418, a 'Mayday' was received by CGRS Bull Harbour from the "Jean B" indicating that the vessel was taking on water and in danger of sinking. Approximately 40 minutes later, in rough seas and strong winds, the "Jean B" sank one-half mile west of Pine Island. Of the three people on board, two were found dead by search and rescue vessels some 5 hours after the sinking and a third person is still missing. No pollution was reported following this incident.

Book excerpt: In the later afternoon of April 14, 1986, while fishing in St. Georges Bay, Newfoundland, the fishing vesssel "Unatodd" out fo Isle aux Morts, Newfoundland, came into contact with an ice floe. apparently undamaged the "Unatodd" continued fishing but later, the vessel was found to be making water. The pumps could not cope and, despite the efforts of her crew and other fishing vessels, which had responded to her radio call for assistance, the "Unatodd" sank in the early hours of the following morning. The crew were taken aboard an attending CMRA vessel and there were no injuries nor was there any pollution as a result of this incident. The insured value of the "Unatodd" was in the order of $255,000.

Shortly after midnight, the power operated watertight doors were remotely closed from the bridge for the passage through Seymour Narrows. a few minutes after the passage, the officer of the watch was notified that a crew member had been injured by a watertight door. The master was called and medical assistance was requested via a Coast Guard radio station. The ship was turned around and the patient transported to the Campbell River General Hospital where she was found to have a broken pelvis, broken arm, and multiple internal injuries, but her life was not in danger.
