Book excerpt: If asked to list the greatest innovators of modern American poetry, few of us would think to include Jay-Z or Eminem in their number. And yet hip hop is the source of some of the most exciting developments in verse today. The media uproar in response to its controversial lyrical content has obscured hip hop's revolution of poetic craft and experience: Only in rap music can the beat of a song render poetic meter audible, allowing an MC's wordplay to move a club-full of eager listeners.Examining rap history's most memorable lyricists and their inimitable techniques, literary scholar Adam Bradley argues that we must understand rap as poetry or miss the vanguard of poetry today. Book of Rhymes explores America's least understood poets, unpacking their surprisingly complex craft, and according rap poetry the respect it deserves.

Book Rhymes in the Flow

Download or read book Rhymes in the Flow written by Macklin Smith and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its global popularity, rap has received little scholarly attention in terms of its poetic features. Rhymes in the Flow systematically analyzes the poetics (rap beats, rhythms, rhymes, verse and song structures) of many notable rap songs to provide new insights on rap artistry and performance. Defining and describing the features of what rappers commonly call flow, the authors establish a theory of the rap line as they trace rap’s deepest roots and stylistic evolution—from Anglo-Saxon poetry to Lil Wayne—and contextualize its complex poetics. Rhymes in the Flow helps explain rap’s wide appeal by focusing primarily on its rhythmic and thematic power, while also claiming its historical, cultural, musical, and poetic importance.

Book Rap Poetry

  • Author : Gerard Vincent Ali

  • ISBN : 9781425946142
  • Pages : 108 pages

Download or read book Rap Poetry written by Gerard Vincent Ali and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My humble thoughts about this book, if you would allow me. RAP POETRY, "the next level" is a bold, exciting, fun to read fiction book. Saying that, I must add that this book is based on my life, my deeds, my thoughts, and most of all, the experience life has given me; so to say it is all fiction would be very far from the truth. I can probably pinpoint a situation in my life for every poem in this book and I believe my readers will also be able to, but this is not my intention for writing this letter. Traditionally poetry has not been the most successful form of writing when it comes to a healthy income, at least this is what I have been told, hopefully I'm wrong and you the publisher will prove there is no truth in this theory. I think this book Rap poetry "the next level" can be a great success, it's a bold, exciting and fun book to read, but what is even more important is that it will appeal to both young and old, something that most poets have not been able to do, and if they have I personally haven't seen their work. I have read poetry throughout my life and I have enjoyed it, at least sometimes, but to be quite honest if I was a teenager and entered a book store and happened to pick up a book with poems it would not keep my interest for more than two minutes. I only make this comment because I myself went searching for poetry simply to get some idea of how youths today respond to, or more so, what appeals to youths today in poetry. Not only was I un-captivated by any present material but I could not find one young person that had any interest in poetry, maybe I did not search far enough, personally I think this is sad. Rap poetry "the next level" is a bold step, but I believe it is as it says, The Next Level in rap and it dares any one who reads it too make it their own. I could have gone to a studio, put music to my lyrics, make them into songs as I have been advised to do on more than one occasion and who knows, maybe it will turn out that this is what I should have done. You see my goal, my aim, is to prove that people of all ages still do contrary to popular belief can see the beauty in lyrics of a poem before it becomes a hit song, that they do have an imagination and some sort or vision. The truth of it is, a song, and even more so a good song is one where music complements good lyrics to create something beautiful, but unfortunately writers are straying away from good lyrics to simply good rhythms and beats. I guess to each his own. Thank you in advance for taking time to read my book and my comments.

Book The Lyre Book

Download or read book The Lyre Book written by Matthew Kilbane and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redefines modern lyric poetry at the intersection of literary and media studies. In The Lyre Book, Matthew Kilbane urges literary scholars to consider lyric not as a genre or a reading practice but as a media condition: the generative tension between writing and sound. In addition to clarifying issues central to the study of modern poetry—including its proximity to popular song, hallowed objecthood, and seeming autonomy from historical determination—this revisionary theory of lyric presents a new history of modern US poetry as one sonorous practice among many clamorous others. Focusing on the mid-twentieth century, Kilbane traces the impact of new sound technologies on a diverse array of literary and musical works by Lorine Niedecker, Harry Partch, Louis and Celia Zukofsky, Sterling Brown, John Wheelwright, Langston Hughes, Marianne Moore, Russell Atkins, and Helen Adam. Kilbane shows how literary critics can look to media history to illuminate poetry's social life, and how media scholars can read poetry for insight into the cultural history of technology. In this book, the lyric poem emerges as a sensitive barometer of technological change.

  • Pages : 253 pages

Download or read book Rap Rhyme and Rhythm written by Paul Alfred Barton and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wordrider's This and That is a mixture of poems and song lyrics about a range of feelings. Words about love, broken hearts, things that might be silly, and abuse by husband, boyfriend, friend or family member. I try to convey feelings that might have you touching the sky, walking with a rain cloud overhead, or maybe shaking your head in wonderment. You might laugh, cry, or be left scratching your head. My hope is that my poems or songs will let someone know they aren't alone in what they have been through, and that tomorrow can be better. That faith will see you through. I give thanks to God for giving me these words to write. I dedicate this book to my mom, my family, my friends, and each and every person, who has helped me along the way, even the ones I don't know. I thank them, one and all, each one that took time to read my poems even though they might not have wanted to read them. Some people say some of my poems or songs lyrics are off the wall or too much about love. To this, I can only say: "The reason I write off the wall stuff is I play on the ceiling a lot." and "It may not be love but it is close enough to chocolate to taste good."
