Book Rantings of a Weedhead The Plight of an Idealist

Download or read book Rantings of a Weedhead The Plight of an Idealist written by S.S. B and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-10-03 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you ever one day wake up and realise that life, and that is to say ""living"" completely lacks meaning? You look about you and everything that there is to work for, and everything that there is to strive for, is not only entirely meaningless, but would slowly consume your soul? Because the value that is placed on these things far exceeds its true value, and the effort required to attain them therefore would find you withering away from your failure to perform, or losing yourself gradually in your desire to excel. When the ideal is but a dream, bordering on fairy tale, would you rather: a) Go to bed and keep dreaming b) Lose yourself in reality, or c) Charge ahead regardless? Jamaicans have a saying when taking tests, ""When in doubt, choose C."" This is something of a story of one idealistic weedhead, getting from the point of no meaning, to tasting for real the ideal.

Book Reading Song Lyrics

Download or read book Reading Song Lyrics written by Lars Eckstein and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Song Lyrics offers the first systematic introduction to lyrics as a vibrant genre of (performed) literature. It takes lyrics seriously as a complex form of verbal art that has been unjustly neglected in literary, music, and, to a lesser degree, cultural studies, partly as it cuts squarely across institutional boundaries. The first part of this book accordingly introduces a thoroughly transdisciplinary interpretive framework. It outlines theoretical approaches to issues such as performance and performativity, generic convention and cultural capital, sound and songfulness, mediality and musical multimedia, and step by step applies them to the example of a single song. The second part then offers three extended case studies which showcase the larger cultural and historical viability of this model. Probing into the relationship between lyrics and the ambivalent performance of national culture in Britain, it offers exemplary readings of a highly subversive 1597 ayre by John Dowland, of an 1811 broadside ballad about Sara Baartman, ‘The Hottentot Venus’, and of a 2000 song by ‘jungle punk’ collective Asian Dub Foundation. Reading Song Lyrics demonstrates how and why song lyrics matter as a paradigmatic art form in the culture of modernity.

This work not only considers the who and what of history, but provides a clear demonstration of why things happened.

Book Monsters in the Closet

Download or read book Monsters in the Closet written by Harry M. Benshoff and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1997-11-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monster in the Closet is a history of the horrors film that explores the genre's relationship to the social and cultural history of homosexuality in America. Drawing on a wide variety of films and primary source materials including censorship files, critical reviews, promotional materials, fanzines, men's magazines, and popular news weeklies, the book examines the historical figure of the movie monster in relation to various medical, psychological, religious and social models of homosexuality. While recent work within gay and lesbian studies has explored how the genetic tropes of the horror film intersect with popular culture's understanding of queerness, this is the first book to examine how the concept of the monster queer has evolved from era to era. From the gay and lesbian sensibilities encoded into the form and content of the classical Hollywood horror film, to recent films which play upon AIDS-related fears. Monster in the Closet examines how the horror film started and continues, to demonize (or quite literally "monsterize") queer sexuality, and what the pleasures and "costs" of such representations might be both for individual spectators and culture at large.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeing is Believing is a provocative, shrewd and witty look at the Hollywood fifties movies we all love - or love to hate - and the thousand subtle ways they reflect the political tensions of the decade. Peter Biskind concentrates on the films everybody saw but nobody really looked at, classics such as Giant, Rebel Without a Cause, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and shows us how movies that appear politically innocent in fact bear an ideological burden. As we see organization men and rugged individualists, housewives, and career women, cops and docs, teen angels and teenage werewolves fight it out across the screen, from suburbia to the farthest reaches of the cosmos, we understand that we have been watching one long dispute about how to be a man, a woman, an American - the conflicts of the time in action.

Book Masters Of Deceit The Story Of Communism In America And How To Fight It

Download or read book Masters Of Deceit The Story Of Communism In America And How To Fight It written by J. Edgar Hoover and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation explains the startling facts about the major menace of our time, communism: what it is, how it works, what its aims are, the real dangers it poses, and what loyal American citizens must know to protect their freedom. MASTERS OF DECEIT is a powerful and informative book—a firsthand account of American communism from its beginnings to the present, written by a man more intimately familiar with the complete story than any other American. Mr. Hoover shows the day-to-day operations of the Communist Party, USA: who the communists are, what they claim, why people be-come communists and why some break away. He describes life within the Party, communist strategy and tactics, methods of mass agitation and underground infiltration, espionage, sabotage, and its treatment of minorities. The picture of what life in this country would be under communism (toward which thou-sands of misguided Americans actually are working now!) is vivid and shocking. The forceful, driving message of this book is clarified with many incidents and anecdotes, definitions of communist terms, key dates, and a list of international communist organizations and publications which illustrate the communist Trojan horse in action. And it concretely outlines just what you can do now to combat the evils of the “false religion” of communism, so that you can stay free. MASTERS OF DECEIT is one of the most important books of our time—a warning of the clear and present danger to our way of life.

Book excerpt: Why do we still have nits? What exactly are 'purity rules'? And why have baths scarcely changed in 200 years? The long history of personal hygiene and purity is a fascinating subject that reveals how closely we are linked to our deeper past. In this pioneering book, Virginia Smith covers the global history of human body-care from the Neolithic to the present, using first-hand accounts and sources. From pre-historic grooming rituals to New Age medicine, from ascetics to cosmetics, Smith looks at how different cultures have interpreted and striven for personal cleanliness and shows how, throughout history, this striving for purity has brought great social benefits as well as great tragedies. It is probably safe to say that no-one who reads this book will look at his or her body (or bathroom) in quite the same way again.

Book The Inquisition in Hollywood

Download or read book The Inquisition in Hollywood written by Larry Ceplair and published by Anchor Books. This book was released on 1980 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The blacklist. The Hollywood Ten. These words, evocative as they are, do not reveal that, from 1933 through 1947, Hollywood was the focal point of progressive political activity in the United States. Nor do they convey that the imprisonments and blacklistings were not an isolated outbreak of Cold War hysteria, but rather the successful conclusion of two decades of efforts by conservative and reactionary forces to curtail political activism in Hollywood. In the thirties and forties, Hollywood activists--Lillian Hellman, Ring Lardner, Jr., John Howard Lawson, Albert Maltz, Dalton Trumbo, among others--took part in countless political battles. They founded guilds, aided anti-fascist forces in the Spanish Civil War, and helped elect progressive candidates to public office. But progressives were unwelcome in an industry dominated by the last tycoons--especially since the industry was America's most glamorous and visible. With the outbreak of the Cold War, and the fear of anything labeled "Communist" that it engendered, the right wing finally managed, by means of the blacklist, to bring thought control to Hollywood--and to America. This book tells the real story of how, for a brief time and against immense obstacles, a group of dedicated men and women transformed Hollywood from a glamorous symbol of unreality into the center of social and political consciousness in the United States.--Adapted from dust jacket.
