Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past two decades have witnessed a dramatic increase in the demand for analyses of health and public affairs program data. Governments at the federal and state levels have stimulated, if not mandated, much of this increased de mand and spawned numerous not-for-profit and quasi-public organizations research groups, lobbying organizations, consulting firms-who actively use analytic techniques. Program analysis is a broad term that encompasses activities such as pro gram planning and prediction, program assessment, and program evaluation. Though purposes differ and techniques vary, the common denominator for all applications is the attempt to use quantitative techniques to provide compre hensive and objective analyses. Program analysis in public health and public affairs shares another common feature: In many cases the data collected for these applications are categorical in nature-that is, discrete information rep resented by categories. Whether a defendant in a criminal trial is convicted (yes, no), the number of times a person visits a community health center in a month (0,1,2,3, ... ), how a person feels about a proposed program (agree, disagree, not sure, no opinion)-these are examples of categorical data. This book describes a multivariate categorical data analysis technique the weighted-least-squares (WLS) approach developed by Grizzle, Starmer, and Koch (GSK)-applied to program analysis in health and public affairs. It is written for in-service professionals who desire an introduction to applied cate gorical data analysis and for preservice students who are studying quantitative methods.

Book Rank Correlation Methods

Download or read book Rank Correlation Methods written by Maurice George Kendall and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of this classic reference includes a wealth of information on the mathematics and practical applications of rank correlation methods. It represents the most extensive revision since the book first appeared in 1948 and provides clear explanations of the methods of rank correlation widely used by statisticians, educators, psychologists, and others involved in analyzing qualitative material. Among the many topics covered are the Goodman-Kruskal coefficient, partial rank correlation, trend tests, and regression techniques. Real numerical examples and problems are taken from interesting research in the social sciences. Expanded tables have also been added that include larger sample sizes and a table of distribution of Kendall's partial law. Reflecting the vast amount of research published in recent years, this edition updates the references and offers over 300 new bibliographic entries. The valuable appendix tables have been revised and expanded.

Book excerpt: Aimed at helping the researcher select the most appropriate measure of association for two or more variables, the author clearly describes such techniques as Spearman's rho, Kendall's tau, Goodman and Kruskals' gamma and Somer's d and carefully explains the calculation procedures as well as the substantive meaning of each measure.

Book Statistical Methods for Ranking Data

Download or read book Statistical Methods for Ranking Data written by Mayer Alvo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces advanced undergraduate, graduate students and practitioners to statistical methods for ranking data. An important aspect of nonparametric statistics is oriented towards the use of ranking data. Rank correlation is defined through the notion of distance functions and the notion of compatibility is introduced to deal with incomplete data. Ranking data are also modeled using a variety of modern tools such as CART, MCMC, EM algorithm and factor analysis. This book deals with statistical methods used for analyzing such data and provides a novel and unifying approach for hypotheses testing. The techniques described in the book are illustrated with examples and the statistical software is provided on the authors’ website.

Book Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets

Download or read book Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets written by Krassimir T. Atanassov and published by Physica. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the beginning of 1983, I came across A. Kaufmann's book "Introduction to the theory of fuzzy sets" (Academic Press, New York, 1975). This was my first acquaintance with the fuzzy set theory. Then I tried to introduce a new component (which determines the degree of non-membership) in the definition of these sets and to study the properties of the new objects so defined. I defined ordinary operations as "n", "U", "+" and "." over the new sets, but I had began to look more seriously at them since April 1983, when I defined operators analogous to the modal operators of "necessity" and "possibility". The late George Gargov (7 April 1947 - 9 November 1996) is the "god father" of the sets I introduced - in fact, he has invented the name "intu itionistic fuzzy", motivated by the fact that the law of the excluded middle does not hold for them. Presently, intuitionistic fuzzy sets are an object of intensive research by scholars and scientists from over ten countries. This book is the first attempt for a more comprehensive and complete report on the intuitionistic fuzzy set theory and its more relevant applications in a variety of diverse fields. In this sense, it has also a referential character.
