Book Transnational Exchange in Early Modern Theater

Download or read book Transnational Exchange in Early Modern Theater written by Eric Nicholson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizing a performative and stage-centered approach, this book considers early modern European theater as an international phenomenon. Early modern theater was remarkable both in the ways that it represented material and symbolic exchanges across political, linguistic, and cultural borders (both "national" and "regional") but also in the ways that it enacted them. Contributors study various modalities of exchange, including the material and causal influence of one theater upon another, as in the case of actors traveling beyond their own regional boundaries; generalized and systemic influence, such as the diffused effect of Italian comedy on English drama; the transmission of theoretical and ethical ideas about the theater by humanist vehicles; the implicit dialogue and exchange generated by actors playing "foreign" roles; and polyglot linguistic resonances that evoke circum-Mediterranean "cultural geographies." In analyzing theater as a medium of dialogic communication, the volume emphasizes cultural relationships of exchange and reciprocity more than unilateral encounters of hegemony and domination.

Book Performing Shakespeare in India

Download or read book Performing Shakespeare in India written by Shormishtha Panja and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-20 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is envisaged as an intervention in the ongoing explorations in social and cultural history, into questions of what constitutes Indianness for the colonial and the postcolonial subject and the role that Shakespeare plays in this identity formation. Performing Shakespeare in India presents studies of Indian Shakespeare adaptations on stage, on screen, on OTT platforms, in translation, in visual culture and in digital humanities and examines the ways in which these construct Indianness. Shakespeare in India has had multiple local interpretations in different media and equally wide-ranging responses, be it the celebration of Shakespeare as a bishwokobi (world poet) in 19th-century Bengal, be it in the elusive adaptation of Shakespeare in Meitei and Tangkhul tribal art forms in Manipur, or be it in the clamour of a boisterous Bollywood musical. In the response of diasporic theatre professionals, or in Telugu and Kannada translations, whether resisted or accepted with open arms, Shakespeare in India has had multiple local interpretations in different media. All the essays are connected by the common thread of extraordinary negotiations of postcolonial identity formation in language, in politics, in social and cultural practices, or in art forms.

Book Fritz Bennewitz in India

Download or read book Fritz Bennewitz in India written by Joerg Esleben and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers the first comprehensive analysis of the work of East German theatre director Fritz Bennewitz in India between 1970 and 1994. Joerg Esleben has gathered together many of Bennewitz’ own writings, most published for the first time, in which he reflects on his production of plays by Bertolt Brecht, Shakespeare, Goethe, Chekhov, and Volker Braun. By translating these writings into English, the editors have provided unprecedented access to Bennewitz’ thinking about intercultural work in India. This material is illuminated by explanatory annotations, contextualized commentary, and critical perspectives from Bennewitz’s former colleagues in India and other leading scholars. Through its kaleidoscope of perspectives, Fritz Bennewitz in India offers a significant counter to dominant models of Western theatrical interculturalism.

Book Theatres of India

Download or read book Theatres of India written by Ananda Lal and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2009 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theatres of India, edited by Professor Ananda Lal, is a comprehensive and accessible guide to theatre in India. The volume surveys both rural and urban modes of Indian theatre across its history of over 2000 years. The first section brings together entries that discuss theatres of India's linguistic regions. The second section includes entries on specific forms and genres, as well as on topics such as street theatre, music, and Tagore's dramatic oeuvre. The book avoids both the Western scholarship's obsession with traditional Asian forms of performance, as well as Indian city-based theatre workers' view that traditional forms do not even qualify as 'theatre'. 'Theatre' in this volume is defined as any form that contains theatre's fundamental element, acting. Importantly, the entries are accompanied by photographs of performances that allow us to view the 'visual-ness' of India's performance forms. In keeping with the highest standards of international reference publishing, Ananda Lal has compiled and edited material from several contributors so that each entry allows us to tap individual documentation and knowledge. Also included in this pioneering, authoritative, and collective resource are short bibliographies for every entry on the regional theatres. Theatres of India will be useful for general readers, theatre professionals, as well as students and researchers of theatre and performance studies.
