Book The Emotional I Ching

Download or read book The Emotional I Ching written by Chris Lofting and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Hardcover) This book presents the I Ching as an example of a language, a language of the vague, and as such shows the ability of the I Ching to describe itself by reference to itself. This association with language allows for linking yang/yin with fight/flight - the language we call "emotions". Through consideration of current research into emotions, the book brings out the ability to translate the language of primary emotion into the language of yang/yin and so present a more consistent, precise, yang/yin interpretation of any situation given an emotional assessment of that situation. The appendix introduces a more general perspective on meaning derivation given our current knowledge about our neurology and the creation of symbols and metaphors.

Book The Social Nature of Emotions

Download or read book The Social Nature of Emotions written by Gerben A. van Kleef and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-08-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotion is a defining aspect of the human condition. Emotions pervade our social and professional lives, they affect our thinking and behavior, and they profoundly shape our relationships and social interactions. Emotions have traditionally been conceptualized and studied as individual phenomena, with research focusing on cognitive and expressive components and on physiological and neurological processes underlying emotional reactions. Over the last two decades, however, an increasing scholarly awareness has emerged that emotions are inherently social – that is, they tend to be elicited by other people, expressed at other people, and regulated to influence other people or to comply with social norms (Fischer & Manstead, 2008; Keltner & Haidt, 1999; Parkinson, 1996; Van Kleef, 2009). Despite this increasing awareness, the inclusion of the social dimension as a fundamental element in emotion research is still in its infancy (Fischer & Van Kleef, 2010). We therefore organized this special Research Topic on the social nature of emotions to review the state of the art in research and methodology and to stimulate theorizing and future research. The emerging field of research into the social nature of emotions has focused on three broad sets of questions. The first set of questions pertains to how social-contextual factors shape the experience, regulation, and expression of emotions. Studies have shown, for instance, that the social context influences the emotions people feel and express (Clark, Fitness, & Brissette, 2004; Doosje, Branscombe, Spears, & Manstead, 2004; Fischer & Evers, 2011). The second set of questions concerns social-contextual influences on the recognition and interpretation of emotional expressions. Studies have shown that facial expressions are interpreted quite differently depending on the social context (e.g., in terms of status, culture, or gender) in which they are expressed (Elfenbein & Ambady, 2002; Hess & Fischer, 2013; Mesquita & Markus, 2004; Tiedens, 2001). The third set of questions has to do with the ways in which people respond to the emotional expressions of others, and how such responses are shaped by the social context. Studies have shown that emotional expressions can influence the behavior of others, for instance in group settings (Barsade, 2002; Cheshin, Rafaeli & Bos, 2011; Heerdink, Van Kleef, Homan, & Fischer, 2013), negotiations (Sinaceur & Tiedens, 2006; Van Kleef, De Dreu, & Manstead, 2004), and leadership (Sy, Côté, & Saavedra, 2005; Van Kleef, Homan, Beersma, & Van Knippenberg, 2010). This Research Topic centers around these and related questions regarding the social nature of emotions, thereby highlighting new research opportunities and guiding future directions in the field. We bring together a collection of papers to provide an encyclopedic, open-access snapshot of the current state of the art of theorizing and research on the social nature of emotion. The state of the art work that is presented in this e-book helps advance the understanding of the social nature of emotions. It brings together the latest cutting-edge findings and thoughts on this central topic in emotion science, as it heads toward the next frontier.

Book It s Not Always Depression

Download or read book It s Not Always Depression written by Hilary Jacobs Hendel and published by Random House. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fascinating patient stories and dynamic exercises help you connect to healing emotions, ease anxiety and depression, and discover your authentic self. Sara suffered a debilitating fear of asserting herself. Spencer experienced crippling social anxiety. Bonnie was shut down, disconnected from her feelings. These patients all came to psychotherapist Hilary Jacobs Hendel seeking treatment for depression, but in fact none of them were chemically depressed. Rather, Jacobs Hendel found that they’d all experienced traumas in their youth that caused them to put up emotional defenses that masqueraded as symptoms of depression. Jacobs Hendel led these patients and others toward lives newly capable of joy and fulfillment through an empathic and effective therapeutic approach that draws on the latest science about the healing power of our emotions. Whereas conventional therapy encourages patients to talk through past events that may trigger anxiety and depression, accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP), the method practiced by Jacobs Hendel and pioneered by Diana Fosha, PhD, teaches us to identify the defenses and inhibitory emotions (shame, guilt, and anxiety) that block core emotions (anger, sadness, fear, disgust, joy, excitement, and sexual excitement). Fully experiencing core emotions allows us to enter an openhearted state where we are calm, curious, connected, compassionate, confident, courageous, and clear. In It’s Not Always Depression, Jacobs Hendel shares a unique and pragmatic tool called the Change Triangle—a guide to carry you from a place of disconnection back to your true self. In these pages, she teaches lay readers and helping professionals alike • why all emotions—even the most painful—have value. • how to identify emotions and the defenses we put up against them. • how to get to the root of anxiety—the most common mental illness of our time. • how to have compassion for the child you were and the adult you are. Jacobs Hendel provides navigational tools, body and thought exercises, candid personal anecdotes, and profound insights gleaned from her patients’ remarkable breakthroughs. She shows us how to work the Change Triangle in our everyday lives and chart a deeply personal, powerful, and hopeful course to psychological well-being and emotional engagement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 8 Realizations featured in Healing Our Bloodlines by G. K. Hunter reveal a path to liberation from the cyclic pain passed down from elders to children. These realizations were gleaned from 15 years of multi-cultural workshops and client sessions where participants bravely faced their family trees to discover the invisible burdens that they had inherited. As they lifted those burdens, they found their special gifts that were germinating deep inside. Those who have embodied the 8 Realizations were rewarded with 8 Birthrights, the very nourishment that empowered them to release their past hurt, embrace their true passion, and celebrate their most authentic identity. By walking this path, you become a Catalyst for generational change. New York Times Bestselling Author Andrew Carroll endorsed Healing Our Bloodlines, saying: "History has a way of leaving indelible, even deep scars on a lineage, and those wounds often find their way to the next generation of the family tree. But Hunter has discovered an empowering way to lift the sometimes painful remnants of the past, demonstrating to his readers an approach that sheds this melancholy and helps them to become the living legacy of a healed and inspiring lineage." More Endorsements:"I have spent my life transmitting tradition as a vital and profound means of confronting and celebrating life’s hard earned truths. George Kamana Hunter has shown me that trauma can be transmitted along with tradition and has distinguished between storytelling and burden dumping. His insights are deep, his wisdom profound, his strategy fascinating and his goals admirable. I have learned much from Healing Our Bloodlines. It has put into words and into exercises some of struggles of a lifetime of learning, wrestling with the past and trying to create a better future for myself and for the world in which I live. The great Hasidic Master Menachem Mendel of Kotzk once said: 'Nothing is as whole as a heart that has been broken and mended.' G. K. Hunter shows us why." -Michael Berenbaum, original Project Director for the U. S. Holocaust Memorial Museum & Author of The World Must Know: The History of the Holocaust “Healing Our Bloodlines is a powerful tool for understanding the trauma which affects us all. George Kamana Hunter eloquently and poignantly shares, with unique personal vulnerability, wisdom on how to find a path to freedom and healing. It is an unveiling of truths which are sorely need today." -Joanne Shenandoah, Grammy Award winning artist, multi-cultural peace advocate, & Native America’s most celebrated musician.
