Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis addresses the problem of Multi-Packet Reception (MPR) for random access scenarios in Wireless LAN type infrastructure network. Our results builds on a recently proposed physical-layer network coding mechanism – Compute-and-Forward (C&F); we embed this within slotted ALOHA and Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) protocols for operational scenarios where multiple simultaneous transmissions are likely to occur. A mean-field approach is used to understand the impact of multi-packet reception in random access networks. By focusing on a special family of MPR channels – the all-or-nothing model, stability conditions are derived for slotted ALOHA and CSMA systems under the above assumption. Interestingly, a number of physical-layer network coding schemes such as compute-and-forward, successive compute-and-forward (SCF) and successive interference cancellation can be viewed as special cases of all-or-nothing symmetric MPR model. In addition, the problem is analyzed under the general symmetric MPR channels which turns out not to be fundamentally different from the all-or-nothing MPR. The primary outcome is a deeper understanding of the behavior of random access schemes over general symmetric MPR channels. Due to the interaction among users and the challenges emanating from such interactions, random access can be more readily analyzed if the state of users are assumed decoupled and an approximate stability region obtained for the system. Nonetheless, the approximate stability region computation based on the decoupling assumption is still complicated for even small (few clients) networks. By a mean-field approach, the random access problem is studied in the large number of clients regime. As a result, the evolution of the system state in the limit can be well approximated by a deterministic dynamical system. The stability conditions for the limiting system then paves the way for a better understanding of a known/observed phenomenon called meta-stability whereby (finite) random-access networks undergo a phase transition: from stability to meta-stability. In the thesis, we first present results for slotted ALOHA with all-or-nothing MPR model. An approximate stability region is characterized which is then used for system performance evaluation in terms of throughput and delay. These results are then extended to the case of general symmetric MPR channels. Next, the stability of persistent CSMA systems is analyzed similar to slotted ALOHA analysis and throughput and delay results are obtained. Meta-stability is discussed for CSMA systems and system design guidelines are outlined to guarantee certain quality-of-service requirements, i.e., avoidance of meta-stable behavior. By adding a back-off mechanism, the stationary behavior of a saturated system is studied, again through mean-field analysis. Finally, we propose a novel extension to the cooperating multiple AP scenario for dense networks, where we present new algorithms for MPR-capable systems and present some initial analysis.

Book excerpt: Under Integrated Random-Access Reservation (IRAR) access-control schemes, newly arrived packets can be designated for reserved or random-access transmissions. In the latter case, if a collision occurs, each colliding packet is assigned for transmission by reservation, rather than attempt another random-access transmission. Performance of the IRAR schemes expressed in terms of the associated channel delay-throughput curves. Single packet messages are assumed. Analytical expressions are derived for the limiting average packet delay for a broadcast multi-access channel, under various IRAR schemes. The performance curves under IRAR access-control schemes are compared with those resulting when pure reservation and pure random-access procedures are used. It is shown that for channels with low propagation delays (such as terrestrial radio or line channels), an IRAR scheme yields an excellent performance curve over the whole throughput range. For channels with high propagation delays (such as a satellite communication channel), an IRAR scheme is shown to yield delay-throughput performance characteristics superior to those obtained under pure reservation and random-access schemes, for medium and low network throughput values. At higher throughput values, an efficiently designed integrated access control scheme will be appropriately switched from an IRAR mode into a reservation procedure.

In 1961, Claude Shannon established the foundation for the discipline now known as “multi-user information theory” in his pioneering paper “Two-way Communication Channels,” and later Norman Abramson published his paper “The Aloha System—Another Alternative for Computer Communications” in 1970 which introduced the concept of multiple access using a shared common channel. Thereafter, for more than 40 years of study, numerous elegant theories and algorithms have been developed for multiple-access communications. During the 1980s and 1990s the evolution of multiple-access techniques p- ceeded in conjunction with the evolution of wireless networks. Novel multiple access techniques like code division multiple access (CDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) provided increased spectral - ?ciency, dynamicity and ?exibility in radio resource allocation with intrinsic anti-multipath and anti-interference features. In this ?rst decade of the 21st century,multiple-accesstechniques,derivedfromadvancedwirelesstransmission methodologiesbasedonthediversityconcept(e. g. ,MC-CDMA,MIMO-OFDMA and SC-FDMA), opened the road to a renewed idea of multiple access. Today multiple-access communications involve many challenging aspects not only l- ited (like in the past) to physical layer design. Medium access control (MAC) techniques play a crucial role in managing the radio resources that users will exploit to transmit their data streams. Recent developments in software radios and cognitive radios have led to a signi?cant impact also on spectrum m- agement and access paradigms.

Book excerpt: Traditional network optimization focuses on a single control objective in a network populated by obedient users and limited dispersion of information. However, most of today's networks are large-scale with lack of access to centralized information, consist of users with diverse requirements, and are subject to dynamic changes. These factors naturally motivate a new distributed control paradigm, where the network infrastructure is kept simple and the network control functions are delegated to individual agents which make their decisions independently ("selfishly"). The interaction of multiple independent decision-makers necessitates the use of game theory, including economic notions related to markets and incentives. This monograph studies game theoretic models of resource allocation among selfish agents in networks. The first part of the monograph introduces fundamental game theoretic topics. Emphasis is given to the analysis of dynamics in game theoretic situations, which is crucial for design and control of networked systems. The second part of the monograph applies the game theoretic tools for the analysis of resource allocation in communication networks. We set up a general model of routing in wireline networks, emphasizing the congestion problems caused by delay and packet loss. In particular, we develop a systematic approach to characterizing the inefficiencies of network equilibria, and highlight the effect of autonomous service providers on network performance. We then turn to examining distributed power control in wireless networks. We show that the resulting Nash equilibria can be efficient if the degree of freedom given to end-users is properly designed.
