Book excerpt: "Randolph Cemetery is a historic African-American burial ground in Columbia, South Carolina. Established in 1872, the cemetery is named for Benjamin Franklin Randolph, a Reconstruction-era African-American senator who was assassinated in 1868. Randolph Cemetery was the most prominent African-American cemetery in Columbia from the late nineteenth century throughout much of the twentieth century, and it is the final resting place of many of Columbia's most notable African-American figures and families. In recognition of its significance to African-American history and culture, Randolph Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. This approximately four-acre property is located adjacent to Elmwood Cemetery in the northwest corner of Columbia, South Carolina. Since 1973, the cemetery has been administered by the Committee for the Restoration and Beautification of Randolph Cemetery (CRBRC), which gained trustee administration of the cemetery in 1984. The CRBRC has been supported in their efforts through partnerships with local nonprofit organizations, including the Downtown Columbia Cemetery Task Force (DCCTF) and the Historic Columbia Foundation (HCF). In its efforts to assist the Committee for the Restoration and Beautification of Randolph Cemetery, the DCTFF, a group of non-profit organizations working to preserve cemeteries in the city center, has received grant support from the State of South Carolina and the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, which has funded a project to map and prepare a database of the burials and cemetery features within Randolph Cemetery. This grant was administered by the HCF. This report provides the results of this mapping and database project as well as recommendations for the future management and restoration of Randolph Cemetery."--Page iii.

This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of original essays and commentary considers not merely how history has shaped the continuing struggle for racial equality, but also how backlash and resistance to racial reforms continue to dictate the state of race in America. Informed by a broad historical perspective, this book focuses primarily on the promise of Reconstruction, and the long demise of that promise. It traces the history of struggles for racial justice from the post US Civil War Reconstruction through the Jim Crow era, the Civil Rights and Voting Rights decades of the 1950s and 1960s to the present day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This ghost story gave me chill after chill. It will haunt you." -- R.L. Stine, author of Goosebumps "Do you know what it feels like to be forgotten?"On a cold winter night, Iris and her best friend, Daniel, sneak into a clearing in the woods to play in the freshly fallen snow. There, Iris carefully makes a perfect snow angel -- only to find the crumbling gravestone of a young girl, Avery Moore, right beneath her.Immediately, strange things start to happen to Iris: She begins having vivid nightmares. She wakes up to find her bedroom window wide open, letting in the snow. She thinks she sees the shadow of a girl lurking in the woods. And she feels the pull of the abandoned grave, calling her back to the clearing...Obsessed with figuring out what's going on, Iris and Daniel start to research the area for a school project. They discover that Avery's grave is actually part of a neglected and forgotten Black cemetery, dating back to a time when White and Black people were kept separate in life -- and in death. As Iris and Daniel learn more about their town's past, they become determined to restore Avery's grave and finally have proper respect paid to Avery and the others buried there. But they have awakened a jealous and demanding ghost, one that's not satisfied with their plans for getting recognition. One that is searching for a best friend forever -- no matter what the cost. The Forgotten Girl is both a spooky original ghost story and a timely and important storyline about reclaiming an abandoned segregated cemetery."A harrowing yet empowering tale reminding us that the past is connected to the present, that every place and every person has a story, and that those stories deserve to be told." -- Renée Watson, New York Times bestselling author of Piecing Me Together

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Final Resting Places brings together some of the most important and innovative scholars of the Civil War era to reflect on what death and memorialization meant to the Civil War generation-and how those meanings still influence Americans today. In each essay, a noted historian explores a different type of gravesite-including large marble temples, unmarked graves beneath the waves, makeshift markers on battlefields, mass graves on hillsides, neat rows of military headstones, university graveyards, tombs without bodies, and small family plots. Each burial place tells a unique story of how someone lived and died; how they were mourned and remembered. Together, they help us reckon with the most tragic period of American history.
