Book Two Open Door Communal Ranches In Sonoma County

Download or read book Two Open Door Communal Ranches In Sonoma County written by Richie Szala and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sonoma County is a county in the U.S. state of California. Its county seat and largest city is Santa Rosa. A 76-page booklet that offers a brief history of two open-door communal ranches in Sonoma County during the late sixties-early seventies. Nothing quite like them had ever existed before, and they allowed city folks to rediscover and practice their tribal, neo-primitive way of life that consumed less energy and offered more freedom than our regulated, consumpton-oriented Great Society could give. Many of these settlers formed small families that migrated north to the 'Kingdom of New Albion, ' the rural areas of Mendocino, Humboldt and other northern counties, where land was cheap and they could continue their new-found lifestyle unmolested. But the change was too sudden for many neighbors, and in the case of each ranch, one politically powerful neighbor saw to it that the district attorney acted on their complaints. By 1973 it was all over, and the fines levied and legal fees for the defense ran into many thousands of dollars, Nevertheless it was a gentle story when compared to the violent confrontations in the cities at the time. Also, in these days when everyone is wringing their hands about the homeless problem, it might be good to remember that thousands of people were provided shelter for free.

Book excerpt: The Sea Ranch, translated from the Spanish "Del Mar Ranch," occupies the northwest corner of Sonoma County and is renowned for its architecture and environmental sensitivity. The development of a second-home community in 1965 was just one more chapter in a long history that began in 1846. The Sea Ranch is part of the German Rancho, the most northern coastal Mexican land grant, which was confirmed by the United States following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. It was home to German cattlemen, loggers, and an early-20th-century Russian Baptist colony. Over the years, shepherds, World War II soldiers, and bootleggers have called it home. Early maps and photographs tell the history of the area, and contemporary photographs reveal remnants of historic buildings and sites on the current Sea Ranch landscape.

Book excerpt: The ongoing project that Steve and Nancy Oliver have developed over the last 30 years has no obvious parallel in the history of art collecting. Beginning in 1985, their ranch in Northern California has been the site for dozens of commissions, site-specific and permanent outdoor works, by some of the most significant artists of the twentieth century. The likes of Bruce Nauman, Richard Serra, Ann Hamilton, Martin Puryear, Andy Goldsworthy and many others have constructed works, with the active support of the Olivers. Oliver Ranch is the first published look at one of the greatest collections of outdoor sculpture in the world (open to the public only during the fall and spring for organized groups). Including a major essay plus individual texts on each commission by Joan Simon, and filled with interviews, artist statements, plans, archival photographs and stunning new photography, this book charts the history of the project through each commission, through the eyes of the artists and the Olivers.

Book excerpt: The romantic and intriguing homes set in the idyllic landscapes of the great California ranches. The lure of the West has been strong in American history, representing the promise of beautiful, wild landscapes, broad vistas, clean air, and bright skies. Set on this magnificent land are the homes and their interiors—from the 150-year-old Rancho Camulos of Ramona fame to Jack London’s Beauty Ranch on the slopes of Sonoma Mountain to the working ranches of today. Ranches: Home on the Range in California presents an expression of a lifestyle steeped in self-sufficiency, love of the land, and unpretentiousness. Arising from the tradition of the Mexican land-grant ranchos and the spread of Spanish Catholic missions, the ranches of California have a long and multifaceted history, which is examined by author Marc Appleton, who himself can attest to the challenges and charms of ranch life. Located in dramatic landscapes of rolling hills, upon the sides of mountains, or in vast plains bordered by snow-capped mountains, the featured homes demonstrate archetypal types—from the Spanish-style hacienda form of historic Rancho Camulos, with its open porch and broad eaves, to the New England clapboard traditional, as seen in Jack London’s Beauty Ranch. At once a tribute to a historic form and a fading way of life, as well as a celebration of renewal, architectural beauty, and the romance of the West, this book offers the reader an immersive experience of living on the land.
