Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in the Footsteps of Don Quixote A small portion of this work appeared in the Englishman's Magazine some years ago, and ex cited great and general interest; when that periodi cal was discontinued, Mr. Inglis was earnestly solicited, not only by his friends, but by those who were acquainted with him merely through the me dium of literature, to complete a work which pro nnsed to illustrate the most delightful of romances, and also to exhibit the most characteristic features of Spanish life. Other avocations compelled him to delay for a season the accomplishment of this task; but early in 1835, the manuscript was pre pared for the press, and the forthcoming work announced in the usual channels of literary intelli gence. Before, however, the printing could be begun, a mortal disease seized upon the lamented author, and he sunk into the grave universally regretted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a unique scholarly attempt to examine Don Quixote from multiple angles to see how the re-accentuation of the world’s greatest literary hero takes place in film, theatre, and literature. To accomplish this task, eighteen scholars from the USA, Canada, Spain, and Great Britain have come together, and each of them has brought his/her unique perspective to the subject. For the first time, Don Quixote is discussed from the point of re-accentuation, i.e. having in mind one of the key Bakhtinian concepts that will serve as a theoretical framework. A primary objective was therefore to articulate, relying on the concept of re-accentuation, that the history of the novel has benefited enormously from the re-accentuation of Don Quixote helping us to shape countless iconic novels from the eighteenth century, and to see how Cervantes’s title character has been reinterpreted to suit the needs of a variety of cultures across time and space.

Download or read book Miscellaneous Writings written by John Stuart Mill and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1989-12-15 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interests and activities of John Stuart Mill (1806–73) were so wide-ranging that even the varied subjects of thirty previously published volumes of Collected Works cannot encompass them all. In this volume are brought together diverse and interesting instances of his polymathic career, none before republished and some previously unpublished. Neatly framing Mill’s writing career are his editorial prefaces and extensive notes to Jeremy Bentham;s Rationale of Judicial Evidence (1827) and James Mill’s Analysis of the Phenomena of the Human Mind (1869). Both demonstrate his extraordinary powers of mind and diligence as well as his fealty. His constant avocation, field botany, is shown in his botanical writings, which open a window on an almost unknown activity that sustained and delighted him. Brief comments on two medical works hint at another interest. Two articles of which he was co-author demonstrate his work as editor of the London and Westminster Review, and a calendar of his contributions to the Political Economy Club provides yet another glimpse into his chosen activities and concerns. Published for the first time are Mill’s English and French wills, providing still further biographical detail.
