Book excerpt: In this exciting new history of Dodge and Ram trucks, award-winning automotive author Patrick Foster details the genesis of today's hot-selling Ram pickups, vans and four-wheel-drives. Beginning with the Graham Brothers, who built the first trucks sold through Dodge dealers, Foster traces the path of Dodge commercial vehicles through the terrific Dodge trucks built during the Roaring Twenties and into the Depression Thirties. Foster then takes us into the war years, 1941-1945, when Dodge manufactured a broad array of war materiel including the mighty WD and WF trucks, which later morphed into the now-legendary postwar Dodge Power Wagons. Next, Foster dives into the decade of the fabulous 1950s, a golden era for American pickups that brought us the equally fabulous Dodge B and C series trucks. Entering the 1960s, Foster tells the story of the growing popularity of Dodge trucks. The story grows as the Dodge line expands in size and in sales. The Dodge D-series and four-wheel-drive W-series are covered in a following chapter, while another is dedicated to the Dodge cabover trucks. The book ends with an Addendum dedicated to the delightful Dodge cabovers. The final chapter of Dodge and Ram Pickups: An Illustrated History covers the turbulent years 2000-2020 when Dodge went from being part of a bankrupt company to its present position today as the number 2 selling full-size pickup in the world.

Book Mopar Muscle

Download or read book Mopar Muscle written by Robert Genat and published by . This book was released on with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, this book covers Chrysler's incredible series of muscle cars. In 1955 Chrysler introduced the first of its famed 300 "letter series" cars. The company designed a stylish, sporty car, stuffed in one of its potent Hemi engines, and gave birth to the American muscle car. The C-300's combination of style and performance put the Mopar brand ahead of its competitors in the postwar performance race. When the Detroit performance wars began in earnest during the 1960s, Chrysler was well positioned to build the most outragous, bodacious cars of an outrageous, bodacious era, cars like the famed Charger, Hemi Cuda, Road Runner, Superbird, and Challenger T/A. These cars dominated the dragstrips as well as the NASCAR ovals, and with color combinations guaranteed to burn out the corneas of your eyes if you stared at them directly, they ruled the streets of America; they ruled not just the streets, bu the drive ins and parking lots. Nothing was cooler than Mopar muscle. Over the years these legendary Mopar muscle cars were the fastest, baddest assed, most outrageous machines to rip up American pavement. "This lavishly produced book is definitely a feast for all fans of this line of cars: the photography (by David Newhardt) is absolutely stunning. Not only are the pictures big, and of the highest quality, but the thought that has gone into their composition is plain for all to see. It could be argued that given the striking nature of these cars, and the wonderful backdrops, it would be hard to go wrong, but Newhardt went the extra mile here, and it shows. The story is also very comprehensive, listing all of the cars from the line, and taking time to tell the story in a well-researched, yet caring way. It is obvious that Robert Genat knows the subject well and loves it even more. . . . This book is a must-have for all lovers of American muscle, and thanks to the sheer depth of its coverage and drop-dead-gorgeous photography, the asking price of £34.99 is something of a bargain." - Classic Car Weekly (UK)

Book Truck

  • Author : John Jerome
  • Publisher : University Press of New England
  • Release : 2014-11-01
  • ISBN : 1611687837
  • Pages : 162 pages

Download or read book Truck written by John Jerome and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Know thy gadgets; first step in restoring some kind of wholeness to one's life." So observes John Jerome about his purpose for rebuilding a 1950 Dodge pickup. Yes, he needs the truck to haul manure, but Jerome also hopes that "by knowing every nut, lockwasher, and cotter pin I could have a machine that had some meaning to me." Thus his year-long odyssey under the hood, among the brake shoes and valves, becomes more than a mechanic's memoir; it is a meditation on machines, metaphysics, and the moral universe. Nearly two decades after publication in 1977, the essential dilemma of Truck still rings true: as Jerome dismantles the aged straight six, he also disassembles our reliance on "two-hundred-dollar appliances that sport flaws in thirty-five-cent parts" and decries the "deliberate encapsulation, impenetrability, of the overtechnologized things with which we furnish our lives." Despite gouged knuckles, a frigid New Hampshire winter, frustrating and inexplicable assemblies, and a close call when the truck rolls off its jacks, he perseveres. In the end, he admits, "I did not find God out there in the barn" among the cans of nuts and bolts." What he does find, however, is that he must make peace with technology; it's a mistake, he says, to "assume there is a point on that line between the caveman's club and the moon shot that marks the moral turnaround, before which technology was somehow benign, after which it is malign." While Jerome gains a truck that runs-sometimes-we gain new insight into a technology that continues to encroach upon our lives.

Download or read book Muscle Trucks written by Mike Mueller and published by Enthusiast Books. This book was released on 2007-08-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American pickup has always been known for its hard-working, easy handling nature, but have mainly served the purpose of being a light workhorse. As pickups became more mainstream through time, a niche of trucks were created with high-performance in mind. Trucks like Chevrolet's SSR and Ford's SVT Lightining are familiar today, but let's not forget GMC's Syclone of the Nineties and Dodge's Li'l Red Truck of 1978-79. Dubbed as Muscle Trucks (in connection to Muscle Cars), the roots of these prestigious pickups go back to 1955, when Chevrolet introduced the Cameo Carrier. While not a hot rod, the Cameo was super cool and it proved that customers would buy a truck that could play as well as work. Ford then followed with its crossover pioneer, the Ranchero, which was half car, half truck. The Ranchero inspired Chevrolet's El Camino, and both of these hybrids featured high-performance variations before all was said and done. This book honors all the hot trucks, then and now, with a selection of outstanding color photography detailing these high-performance haulers inside and out. Among others, photo subjects include the Chevy SS 454, SS 396 and SS 454 El Camino, Cobra Jet Ranchero, GMC Syclone, Chevy SSR, Ford SVT Lighting, Dodge SRT-10, the Li'l Red Truck, and the new Dodge Hemi Rams.
