Book Raising a Silky Terrier Dog

Download or read book Raising a Silky Terrier Dog written by Jace Cooper and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silky Terriers, or Australian Silky Terriers, are a toy dog breed with Australian roots. The name of these dogs comes from their luxurious, silky coat. In several canine classification systems, they are placed in the toy group and are so often referred to as toy or little terriers. Some distinguishing features of Silky Terriers are as follows: - Silky Terriers are petite dogs, standing about 9 to 10 inches (23 to 25 centimeters) at the shoulder and weighing 8 to 11 pounds (3.6 to 5 kilograms) on average. - Coat: Their coat is normally blue and tan in color and is extremely fine and silky. To maintain the quality of their coat, regular grooming is required. - Silky Terriers have an energetic and loving temperament. They have a reputation for being pleasant, bright, and on the lookout. They make for devoted pets and friendly households. - These dogs have a high energy level and love to play, but they are still tiny enough to be suitable apartment pets. They need to exercise frequently to maintain their health and happiness. - Silky Terriers are trainable dogs because of their intelligence, yet they can be difficult at times. They respond well to training that is both consistent and uses positive reinforcement. - The Silky Terrier originated in Australia, when the Yorkshire Terrier and the Australian Terrier were bred to create a new breed. They were first developed to target small game and rodents. - Patellar luxation (knee joint difficulties) and dental issues are two health concerns that can affect Silky Terriers, as they can affect other small dog breeds as well. Visits to the vet on a regular basis are crucial to their health. If you have the time and energy to give a Silky Terrier the attention and exercise it needs, you will be rewarded with a beautiful companion.

Book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of Silky Terriers

Download or read book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of Silky Terriers written by Ross D. Clark, DVM and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book (Silky Terrier) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning “badger dog” and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.
