Book Pride Parades and LGBT Movements

Download or read book Pride Parades and LGBT Movements written by Abby Peterson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.tandfebooks.com/doi/view/10.4324/9781315474052, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license Today, Pride parades are staged in countries and localities across the globe, providing the most visible manifestations of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and intersex movements and politics. Pride Parades and LGBT Movements contributes to a better understanding of LGBT protest dynamics through a comparative study of eleven Pride parades in seven European countries – Czech Republic, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK – and Mexico. Peterson, Wahlström and Wennerhag uncover the dynamics producing similarities and differences between Pride parades, using unique data from surveys of Pride participants and qualitative interviews with parade organizers and key LGBT activists. In addition to outlining the histories of Pride in the respective countries, the authors explore how the different political and cultural contexts influence: Who participates, in terms of socio-demographic characteristics and political orientations; what Pride parades mean for their participants; how participants were mobilized; how Pride organizers relate to allies and what strategies they employ for their performances of Pride. This book will be of interest to political scientists and sociologists with an interest in LGBT studies, social movements, comparative politics and political behavior and participation.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Lesbian and Gay Liberation Movements

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Lesbian and Gay Liberation Movements written by JoAnne Myers and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-09-19 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not so long ago hardly anything was said of the Lesbian Liberation Movement and the Gay Liberation Movement, indeed, the terms gay and lesbian were not even used if some other expression could be found. Today, by contrast, hardly a day passes when something important does not occur, and is carried by the major media and disseminated on more personal levels through blogs and the social media. If anything, there is perhaps too much “news” and not enough “information.” Obviously, a book like this cannot keep up with the news, but it can do something equally important when it comes to information, by reminding us of the past and what has been going and just how fast events are moving. The Historical Dictionary of the Lesbian and Gay Liberation Movements covers the history of this movement through a cross-referenced dictionary with over 1000 entries on specific countries and regions, influential historical figures, laws that criminalized same-sex sexuality, various historical terms that have been used to refer to aspects of same-sex love, and contemporary events and legal decisions. Including a comprehensive chronology and bibliography, this book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone interested in learning more about the struggle for equality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kat trembled in fear; her heart racing as she looked around the windowless room. She sat against the headboard of the bed, staring at the scarring and damage of the wood of the four bedposts, indicating that women before her had been shackled against their will. She glanced fearfully at the guard who sat across the room from her, watching her without sympathy. How could her life have changed in a flash of a few seconds? Just a year before she had joined her family on the island, which had seemed to promise peace and tranquility. It had been anything but for her, as she battled her mother's intolerance and abuse of her, and what seemed like constant scheming against her by her arch enemy she'd known since childhood. And now, just as life was beginning to fulfill the promise of peace, she was facing terror instead. Kat heard the door to her room open, and her eyes widened as he walked in, smiling and greeting her with those black, soulless eyes that were devoid of humanity. Kito came to her mind instantly. She knew now why she was there. Revenge on Kito Robinson. As Kito's enemy drew near to her, Kat wondered if she had any hope at all. Would Kito be able to use his vast resources to find her on time? Or was she doomed as the other missing islanders had been? Cage the Hummingbird tells the story of Kat Jordan, a quirky, impulsive, art prodigy, brain injury survivor who limps her way into the life of Kito Robinson. Kito's atheistic world will be rocked by Kat's outlandish humor, antics, and devotion to her faith. It is a tale of overcoming obstacles of cultural differences, beliefs, and severe suffering and trauma through the incredible power of having a relationship and identity in Jesus Christ.

Book excerpt: In the midst of a marital crisis, Jane hatches an unusual plan to avoid a custody battle, the thing she most fears: she convinces husband Kevin to walk away from the pressures of New York—in particular, her demanding job and an affair she almost had—in the hope that moving to their favorite city abroad will fix their family. In San Miguel de Allende, Jane and her young sons delight in new adventures, but Kevin still seethes. Jane befriends a circle of intriguing women and helps two girls who remind her of the brother she abandoned when her own parents divorced. After witnessing violence involving the girls’ father, Jane’s vivid dreams, possibly guided by a hummingbird messenger from the hereafter, grow ever darker. When tragedy strikes San Miguel, the community fractures and then rises, and Jane must make a dangerous choice. The Broken Hummingbird balances the raw undoing of a marriage with the joys of discovery that lie in building a new life.
