Book Rainbow Body and Resurrection

Download or read book Rainbow Body and Resurrection written by Francis V. Tiso and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading authority on the rainbow body traces its history in the encounter of religions in medieval Central Asia, exploring a previously unimagined connection between early Dzogchen and the resurrection of Jesus Francis V. Tiso, a noted authority on the rainbow body, explores this manifestation of spiritual realization in a wide-ranging and deeply informed study of the transformation of the material body into a body of light. Seeking evidence on the boundary between physical science and deep spirituality that might elucidate the resurrection of Jesus, he investigates the case of Khenpo A Chö, a Buddhist monk who died in eastern Tibet in 1999. Rainbow Body and Resurrection chronicles the dissolution of Khenpo's material body within a week of his death, including eye-witness interviews. Tiso describes the spiritual practices that give rise to the rainbow body and traces their history deep into the encounter of religions in medieval Central Asia. His erudite exploration of the Tibetan phenomenon raises the fascinating question of whether there is a connection between the rainbow body and the dying and rising of Jesus. Drawing on a wealth of recent research, Tiso expands his discussion to include the contemplative geography out of which Dzogchen arose some time in the eighth century along the great Silk Road across Central Asia. The result is an illuminating consideration of previously unimagined relationships between spiritual practices and beliefs in Central Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest traditions around the narrative of Jesus' resurrection are considered in this landmark work by Dale C. Allison, Jr, drawing together the fruits of his decades of research into this issue at the very core of Christian identity. Allison returns to the ancient sources and earliest traditions, charting them alongside the development of faith in the resurrection in the early church and throughout Christian history. Beginning with historical-critical methodology that examines the empty tomb narratives and early confessions, Allison moves on to consider the resurrection in parallel with other traditions and stories, including Tibetan accounts of saintly figures being assumed into the light, in the chapter “Rainbow Body”. Finally, Allison considers what might be said by way of results or conclusions on the topic of resurrection, offering perspectives from both apologetic and sceptical viewpoints. In his final section of “modest results” he considers scholarly approaches to the resurrection in light of human experience, adding fresh nuance to a debate that has often been characterised in overly simplistic terms of “it happened” or “it didn't”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rainbow Body: The Life and Realization of a Tibetan Yogin, Togden Ugyen Tendzin, presents the remarkable life story of Togden Ugyen Tendzin (1888–1962), a Tibetan yogin who in death achieved the “rainbow body,” the release of the physical body in the essence of the five elements and one of the highest spiritual attainments of Dzogchen, recognized as the supreme level of Tibetan Buddhism. His nephew, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu, one of the greatest living masters of Dzogchen, composed the book from his own recollections of his uncle as well as direct quotes from talks with the great yogin himself and his disciple Sala Karma Samten. The book traces the yogin’s childhood struggles, the circumstances that led him to his teacher, the eminent Adzom Drugpa, and his difficult path to self-realization. Finally, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu relates the story of Ugyen Tendzin’s death during imprisonment by the Chinese, when witnesses discovered that though his sheepskin robe still sat upright, his body was gone—a testament to its having dissolved into the rainbow body.

Book Liberation in One Lifetime

Download or read book Liberation in One Lifetime written by Francis V. Tiso and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milarepa (1052-1135), a major figure in the history of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism and known as one of Tibet's greatest lamas and poets, continues to inspire Buddhist practitioners worldwide to the present day. Liberation in One Lifetime explores the history and spirituality of the Kagyu lineage in relationship to the narratives and teachings attributed to Milarepa by studying some of the earliest versions of these materials. Offering a detailed analysis of the biographical material that has been written about Milarepa (who was also a student of Marpa, a major figure in the development of the Bka'-brgyud-pa school of Tibetan Buddhism), author, theologian, and well-respected Tibetan Buddhist scholar, Francis V. Tiso, describes the historical context of the tradition of hagiography (biography) in Buddhism and other spiritual traditions, and provides a history of Milarepa's influence in Tibet. Part One explains the tradition of composing stories about Milarepa's life and teachings (there have been many throughout the centuries) and includes outlines of the contents of some of them as well as an explanation of the oral versions that have been transmitted via oral epic songs and poems that Milarepa composed. Describing the spiritual components of Bka'-brgyud-pa, Part Two includes tantric practices, an outline for the path of liberation, definitions of "voidness," and the characteristics of fully enlightened Buddhahood. Part Three includes translated biographies and oral teachings of Milarepa (in poetic form) that are considered sacred texts. The book also includes a foreword by Roberto Vitali, a prominent Tibetan Buddhist scholar as well as an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources.

Book excerpt: If you’ve ever had questions about the inconsistencies between chakra systems or wondered where the names, colors, locations, and other associations came from—you’ll find the answers here, along with 24 tables and 28 black-and-white illustrations showing how the Western chakra system developed from the mid-19th through the 20th century, many from rare and forgotten sources. Based on the teachings of Indian Tantra, the chakras have been used for centuries as focal points for healing, meditation, and achieving a gamut of physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits, from improved health to ultimate enlightenment. Contemporary yoga teachers, energy healers, psychics, and self-help devotees think of the chakra system as thousands of years old. Yet the most common version in use in the West today came together as recently as 1977. Never before has the story been told of how the Western chakra system developed from its roots in Indian Tantra, through Blavatsky to Leadbeater, Steiner to Alice Bailey, Jung to Joseph Campbell, Ramakrishna to Aurobindo, and Esalen to Shirley MacLaine and Barbara Brennan.

Book The Buddha Within

Download or read book The Buddha Within written by S. K. Hookham and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tathagatagarbha -- Buddha Nature -- is a central concept of Mahayana Buddhism crucial to all the living practice traditions of Tibetan and Zen Buddhism. Its relationship to the concept of emptiness has been a subject of controversy for seven hundred years. Dr. Hookam's work investigates the divergent interpretations of these concepts and the way the Tibetan tradition is resolving them. In particular she does this with reference to the only surviving Indian commentary on the Tathagatagarbha doctrine, the Ratnagotravibhaga. This text addresses itself directly to the issue of how to relate the doctrine of emptiness (the illusory nature of the world) to that of the truly existing, changeless Absolute (the Buddha Nature). This is the first work by a Western writer to present an analysis of the Shentong tradition based on previously untranslated sources. The Shentong view rests on meditative experience that is inaccessible to the conceptualizing mind. It is deeply rooted in the sutra tradition of Indian Buddhism and is central to an understanding of the Mahamudra and Dzogchen traditions and Tantric practice among Kagyupas and Hyingmapas.

Book The Illusion of Death

  • Author : J. Thomas Devins

  • Release : 2017-07-26

  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book The Illusion of Death written by J. Thomas Devins and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exploration, J. Thomas Devins connects three controversial religious topics (Jesus's resurrection, Shroud of Turin and rainbow body) using their common denominator, the science of the atom. As weird, preposterous and outrageous as it sounds, we each have the capacity to dissolve our body into its atomic parts. That which happened to Jesus on the first Easter Sunday is within the capability of each human being that is willing to follow a structured, disciplined mind training lifestyle. Thousands of practitioners, mostly Tibetan Buddhists, have gracefully exited the planet, like Jesus, without leaving a corpse behind, even in modern times. The human body is but proxy for the human mind. The book is transformational for the reader and a major wakeup call to science and religion. 1) It replaces the notion of a transcendent God with the workings of the human mind. 2) Abrahamic religions, particularly Christianity, must rethink their foundational doctrines. The words of Genesis 3:19, ..".to dust you shall return" can't be universally applied. 3) Mainstream science must end its negative bias against the paranormal in its rigid methods of inquiry. The book brings the known paranormal experience that is frequently demonstrated in the laboratory by fringe science into the light of the real world. 4) The book elevates the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas into prominence. Thomas is the only Gospel that accounts for the resurrection/rainbow body phenomenon and the role of the mind. Connecting the dots, Devins concludes that we are all here, on the planet, because we intend to be here. It is in this knowledge we find the reality of reincarnation and the law of karma; sticky issues which religion and science also need to address. A lifelong Catholic, scientifically educated, and graduate of the school of hard knocks, Devins concludes that the book's revelations will be largely ignored by religion and science. Religion because it is too heavily invested in the biblical notion of death to change. Science because of its engrained attitude against the paranormal. Timely change, if it is to happen, must come from a fiery, renewed attitude of truth seeking that initiates in the Sunday morning pew.

Book Secret Map of the Body

Download or read book Secret Map of the Body written by Gyalwa Yangönpa and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: YangOnpa's Hidden Description of the Vajra Body presents the triad constituting the Vajra Body - the channels, energy-winds, and vital essences - as the basis for the application of experiential yogic techniques. Buddhism often relegates the body to a role subordinate to that of the mind; the focus of YangOnpa's Hidden Description is the body itself, with its manifold layers - coarse, subtle, and very subtle. In his presentation of the human body's energetic structure he contends that it is not simply the means to achieve enlightenment, but enlightenment itself, blending the Highest Tantra notion of the body as the method with the Total Perfection (rdzogs chen) principle of inherently present enlightenment as the fundamental nature of all phenomena. Gyalwa YangOnpa realized the nature of mind at the age of eight upon hearing instructions on the Dzogchen mind cycle of teachings. And at age nine he was installed as the abbot of Lhadong monastery, where he gave profound religious discourses, establishing his reputation as an enlightened emanation. During his lifetime, 1213-1258, he was devoted to four precious masters of different lineages. Under the guidance of the first two, he undertook solitary retreat and, following a clear vision of the energetic system of body and mind, came to master this inseparable matrix. An exceptional being gifted with powers, knowledge, and wisdom, YangOnpa led an exemplary life and his spiritual achievements won him a large number of followers. His literary output left a mark in the writings of later masters of all Tibetan schools, including Tsongkhapa, the Eighth Karmapa, JamgOn Kongtrul LodrO Thaye, Raga Asya, and Jigmed Lingpa.
