Book The Environmental Impact of Railways

Download or read book The Environmental Impact of Railways written by T. G. Carpenter and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1994-10-20 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renaissance in railways and the formal recognition of environmental priorities are both features of the last quarter of the twentieth century, but relatively little has been published about the individual and collective environmental impacts of railways. There is an urgent need to address the subject comprehensively. New railways are being planned in many countries and environmental assessment has become an essential element of planning. Most of the impacts of railways have existed for well over a hundred years and many of these continue to be relevant today. Some new issues, such as the operation of very fast trains or the routeing of tracks to carry them, require special attention. This book brings together the main planning and management issues concerning the way railways, established, newly-constructed, or upgraded, have an impact on the environment. It provides a step-by-step assessment of how the engineer, planner, environmental manager, transport specialist or railway operator should approach the resolution of railway development taking into account environmental priorities and the regulatory framework. Tom Carpenter brings a lifetime of first-hand management and consultancy experience to produce the first modern treatment of this important topic. Contents I. Railways and Planning Introduction Environmental planning Railway planning Passenger traffic Freight II. Impacts on People Social impacts and public perception Noise and vibration Pollution Visual impacts Construction III. Impacts on Resources Resource use and route selection Residential, commercial and productive land Nature conservation Heritage and amenity Railways in scenic landscape Environmental evaluation of land resources IV.Planning for the Twenty-first Century Environmental rail transport solutions

Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book provides a unique overview of the impacts of railways on biodiversity, integrating the existing knowledge on the ecological effects of railways on wildlife, identifying major knowledge gaps and research directions and presenting the emerging field of railway ecology. The book is divided into two major parts: Part one offers a general review of the major conceptual and theoretical principles of railway ecology. The chapters consider the impacts of railways on wildlife populations and concentrate on four major topics: mortality, barrier effects, species invasions and disturbances (ranging from noise to chemical pollution). Part two focuses on a number of case studies from Europe, Asia and North America written by an international group of experts.

Download or read book Railroads and Weather written by Stanley Changnon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-05 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MUCH OF MY WEATHER and climate research over the past 50 years has focused on how atmospheric conditions impact the environment, the ec- omy, and human activities/health. These studies have led to several scientific papers and two books, one about the great floods of 1993 and the other about El Niño, 1997/98. Coupled with this scientific career orientation was a li- long interest in railroads. This avocation led me to write six books and numerous articles about many facets of railroads. The coupling of these two central intellectual interests led to the preparation of this book. Prior to the 1980 deregulation of the industry, there were many more railroads in operation. This text focuses on weather impacts and railroad adjustments since the 1940s. It covers decades when the challenges of weather and climate were faced by a larger number of companies, and this is well emphasized in the wide variety of photographs, which show trains belonging to companies that have now been absorbed or otherwise relegated to the halls of history. Most of the photographs were taken by me and two of my sons, David and Marc. Several friends supplied other photographs. This book has been made possible by several persons and institutions.

Book Sustainable Railway Futures

Download or read book Sustainable Railway Futures written by Becky P.Y. Loo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revitalizing railways as a major sustainable transport mode in modern societies faces many issues and challenges. This in-depth overview places the importance of railways in the wider context of comprehensive sustainability, which encompasses sustainable development, social and economic equity and community livability. Some scholars have described the 21st century as a period of renaissance for railways and suggest this transport mode can fulfil people's desire for high mobility with low negative environmental, social, economic and financial impacts. In light of these new expectations for railways, in both passenger and freight transport worldwide, this book offers the latest research insights on the renewed interest about railway expansions and their wide-ranging environmental, socio-economic and even political implications.

Book High Speed Railways

Download or read book High Speed Railways written by Yulong He and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-03-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-Speed Railways: Environmental Impact and Pollution Prevention and Control considers environmental pollution and pollution control technology in the construction and operation of high-speed rail infrastructure. In six chapters, this new volume introduces high speed rail and environmental impact, considers environmental pollution and prevention in high speed railways, and covers the prediction, measurement and prevention of key environmental aspects of the railway. The title gives engineers the means to understand and mitigate the major environmental impacts of building and operating high-speed railways in the modern world. High-speed railways offer a low-carbon and environmentally-friendly future for public railways. However, building and operating high speed railways at scale causes stress both to the environment and to people living nearby. Impacts include noise, vibration, air and water pollution, electromagnetic radiation, and solid waste from construction sites and the normal operation of the railway. In turn, analyzing the impact of high speed rail has grown in urgency. Details the impact of high-speed rail engineering on people and the environment, also considering technological solutions Covers a wide range of environmental impacts stemming from the construction and operation of high-speed rail Gives insights into the prediction, measurement and prevention of environmental impact, including noise, vibration and electromagnetic radiation Provides practical information based on established engineering practice building and operating high-speed rail in China Includes the latest standards and specifications from China and the ISO in relation to high-speed rail
