Book Electrical Railway Transportation Systems

Download or read book Electrical Railway Transportation Systems written by Morris Brenna and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allows the reader to deepen their understanding of various technologies for both fixed power supply installations of railway systems and for railway rolling stock This book explores the electric railway systems that play a crucial role in the mitigation of congestion and pollution caused by road traffic. It is divided into two parts: the first covering fixed power supply systems, and the second concerning the systems for railway rolling stock. In particular, after a historical introduction to the framework of technological solutions in current use, the authors investigate electrification systems for the power supply of rail vehicles, trams, and subways. Electrical Railway Transportation Systems explores the direct current systems used throughout the world for urban and suburban transport, which are also used in various countries for regional transport. It provides a study of alternating current systems, whether for power supply frequency or for special railway frequency, that are used around the world for the electrification of railway lines, long-distance lines, and high-speed lines. In addition, this resource: Analyzes multiple railway systems from a theoretical and realizable vantage point, with particular regard to functionality, electromagnetic compatibility, and interferences with other electrical systems Studies electric traction railway vehicles, presenting various types of drives and auxiliary devices currently in circulation Discusses solutions employed to ensure interoperability of vehicles that run along lines powered by different systems (e.g., DC and AC, at different frequencies) Electrical Railway Transportation Systems is an ideal text for graduate students studying the subject as well as for industry professionals working in the field.

Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book provides a unique overview of the impacts of railways on biodiversity, integrating the existing knowledge on the ecological effects of railways on wildlife, identifying major knowledge gaps and research directions and presenting the emerging field of railway ecology. The book is divided into two major parts: Part one offers a general review of the major conceptual and theoretical principles of railway ecology. The chapters consider the impacts of railways on wildlife populations and concentrate on four major topics: mortality, barrier effects, species invasions and disturbances (ranging from noise to chemical pollution). Part two focuses on a number of case studies from Europe, Asia and North America written by an international group of experts.

Book Railways and Energy

Download or read book Railways and Energy written by Liviu Leonard Alston and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A railway vehicle requires substantially less propulsive energy than a road vehicle of the same weight moving at the same speed. However, other factors favor road transport. As a result, the ratio of energy consumption by the two modes varies widely depending on service conditions including vehicle characteristics. Railways have a substantial energy advantage for large volumes of bulk commodities. Part I of this paper reviews measures for increasing the railways' energy efficiency and shows that significant gains may be achieved through operational improvements. Part II discusses railway electrification. Its economic viability depends on the opportunity cost of capital, the costs of diesel fuel and of electric power, the traffic mix and the nature of the terrain, as well as on the capital and maintenance costs of railway works and equipment needed with electric and with diesel traction. A series of examples are given, and an analysis suitable for prefeasibility studies is presented for estimating the traffic at which electrification becomes economically viable.
