Book Railroad Construction Classic Reprint

Download or read book Railroad Construction Classic Reprint written by Charles Lee Crandall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railroad Construction This book had its beginning in some notes on railroad con struction which were first prepared about twenty-five years ago and were issued in mimeograph form for the use of students in the College of Civil Engineering at Cornell University. These notes have required frequent revision in order to keep them abreast of ever changing practice, but so much has been done in the last few years in the direction of standardizing construction that the time now seems opportune for enlarging them into a book, for general use. The discussions in engineering associations and in the technical papers have done much to stimulate interest and develop effort. They have also tended to standardize practice by suggesting to each engineer the adoption of the good features of the standards of other railroads, which were improvements upon and applicable to his own road. The method adopted by the American Railway Engineering Association of assigning topics to committees for investigation and report, the report to be presented at the annual convention for general discussion, has accomplished much in this direction. In this work an attempt has been made to present to the reader glimpses of the field and to impress upon him something of the spirit of the work. Book The Economics of Railroad Construction

Download or read book The Economics of Railroad Construction written by Walter Loring Webb and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economics of Railroad Construction: Webb Published Owing to the diversity of opinion existing among railroad men as to the proper scope of a book on railroad economics, a word of introduction is necessary. (Railroad economics, in its broadest sense, covers the entire subject of railroad engineering, from the most simple feature of railroad surveying to the weightiest questions of railroad practice or legislation which could be brought before the Interstate Commerce Commission, Congress, or the United States Supreme Court.) While it is of course desirable that an engineer should have as broad a knowledge as possible of every phase of railroad management and legislation, it should not be forgotten that his primary work is that of construction, maintenance, and operation. If the railroad engineer should develop into the railroad president, the larger questions must be answered, but even in such a case an encyclopedia of railroad science would not cover the ground with which he should be familiar. Book Railway Construction Classic Reprint

Download or read book Railway Construction Classic Reprint written by William Hemingway Mills and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Construction The construction and maintenance of a railway calls for the application of so many branches of engineering that several volumes would be required to do ample justice to a subject so comprehensive and ever-extending. To avoid attempting so wide a range, the object of the following pages has been to describe briefly some of the recognized leading features which regulate railway construction, and to assist the explanation with sketches of works selected from actual practice. Where the number of existing good examples is legion, it is somewhat difficult to make a choice for illustration, and the course adopted has been to select such samples of structures as appear best to elucidate in a simple manner the different types of work under consideration. In the drawings and diagrams many important minor details are necessarily omitted, partly to avoid complexity, but principally to leave more prominent the leading features of the particular piece of work referred to in the description. Some of the sketches of the large span bridges and large span roofs are only shown in outline; but, as their principal dimensions are given, a general idea can be obtained of their actual proportions. No allusion is made to the requisite strengths of the various structures described, nor to the necessary dimensions of the materials used in their construction, as this would necessitate the introduction of a vast amount of mathematical formulae which does not come under the province of the object in view, and which the engineer has already at command from his training and works of reference. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Railroad: With Remarks on American Railway Construction and Management In order, however, to arrive at a fair estimate of the total cost, it is necessary to take into account the fact that the company, pursuing in this respect an unusual, but, as the Authors submit, a very wise course, long since closed the capital account for the main line, and that, exclusive of ordinary maintenance and repairs, there has been expended, out of revenue, during the years 1855 to 1873 inclusive, upon permanent improvements and works of con struction, including the substitution of iron for wood in bridges, and of steel for iron rails, no less a sum than or per mile, bringing the cost up to per mile of single line. If, in the absence of separate accounts, there be deducted for the branches, 82 miles at the average cost of American rail roads, viz., per mile, the cost of the main line will be found to be about per mile of double line. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Railway Review, Vol. 36: June 20, 1896 Oi course, the ladies who are here with us today have highly appreciated what their fathers and bus bands have done to beautify and glorify the Ameri can passenger car, but what do they know or care about the success which you have attained in a mat ter of much more importance to the railroad com panies - that is, the construction of a freight car? For just as you have developed the American pas senger car from what 1 have styled a caboose, so you have wrought out the American freight car from what I will term a wagon or truck. Look back for a moment and think 0! The little box car of six ani ten thousand pounds capacity, and compare it with our present lbs. Car, framed to resist a variety of shocks and strains to which no other structure on earth is exposed. In the contest between the standard gage and the narrow gage track, in which we 'were all intense ly interested some 20 years ago, the promoters of the narrow gage idea were never tired of ex patiating upon the advantage which it ofl'ered. Of a greater weight of paying freight in proportion to the weight of the equipment. It is true that they also claimed a saving in the cost of railroad construction, but that was their principal argument, that the cost of transportation per ton per mile would be greatly lessened on the narrow gage roads, by reason of this reduction in dead weight, and they thus induced a useless expenditure of millions of dollars on thous ands of miles of narrow gage road. Nearly all of which has since been changed to standard gage. Why has it been changed? Mostly because the mas ter var builders have been steadily reducing the pro portion of dead weight to load on the standard gage until now they have produced a car which will carry pounds or more of paying freight on less than pounds of dead weight. Download or read book Handbook of Street Railroad Location Classic Reprint written by John P. Brooks and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Street-Railroad Location This book is designed to present to the student and engineer that part of the subject of street-railroad construction which is to be performed by the civil, rather than by the electrical engineer. It therefore includes, besides the trigonometrical problems pertaining to railroad curves, the general principles governing the choice of site, grades and curves. It is assumed that every one using the book will be familiar with the prac tice of land surveying and with the manipulation of surveying instruments, and no space is given to these subjects. The arrangement is believed to be that which gives the best result in the classroom, while the form and size are convenient for use in the field. Every principle is illustrated by the solu tion of a numerical example, and at the end of each article several problems are proposed to test the proficiency of the student. But they are either in a condensed form, or clothed in for mulas and symbols totally unknown to the average railroad man. During a professional career of nine years the Author has had a varied experience, embracing nearly every kind of railway construction, locating, build ing, and equipping them, and during that. Book Railroad Valuation and Rates Classic Reprint

Download or read book Railroad Valuation and Rates Classic Reprint written by Mark Wymond and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railroad Valuation and Rates This book is intended primarily as a treatise on the Principles of Rates and their relation to Valuation and Rate Regulation. In view of this fact, the reader is entitled to an explanation of why the first four chapters are devoted to what at first sight seem unrelated subjects. No discussion in regard to the proper basis for rate-making can last very long without reference to Capitalization and Valuation. The discussion on capitalization finally turns on the abuses practiced in the construction and promotion of railroads. Promotion and construction are most intimately connected with capitalization - in fact, very much more so than capitalization is with rate-making. There is seemingly some confusion on the part of some authors and publicists in regard to the facts concerning and the conditions surrounding the promotion and construction of our railroads and the relation which such facts and conditions have to capitalization. Many of us have come to accept these widely published interpretation of facts for the facts themselves, generally because we do not take the time to make the investigation necessary to determine their accuracy.
