  • Author : Raffaello Borghini
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2007-01-01
  • ISBN : 080209743X

Download or read book Raffaello Borghini s Il Riposo written by Raffaello Borghini and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raffaello Borghini's Il Riposo (1584) is the most widely known Florentine document on the subject of the Counter-Reformation content of religious paintings. Despite its reputation as an art-historical text, this is the first English-language translation of Il Riposo to be published. A distillation of the art gossip that was a feature of the Medici Grand Ducal court, Borghini's treatise puts forth simple criteria for judging the quality of a work of art. Published sixteen years after the second edition of Giorgio Vasari's Vite, the text that set the standard for art-historical writing during the period, Il Riposo focuses on important issues that Vasari avoided, ignored, or was oblivious to. Picking up where Vasari left off, Borghini deals with artists who came after Michaelangelo and provides more comprehensive descriptions of artists who Vasari only touched upon such as Tintoretto, Veronese, Barocci, and the artists of Francesco I's Studiolo. This text is also invaluable as a description of the mid-sixteenth century reaction against the style of the 'maniera,' which stressed the representation of self-consciously convoluted figures in complicated works of art. The first art treatise specifically directed toward non-practitioners, Il Riposo gives unique insight into the early stages of art history as a discipline, late Renaissance art and theory, and the Counter-Reformation in Italy.

Book The Theatre of Romeo Castellucci and Soc etas Raffaello Sanzio

Download or read book The Theatre of Romeo Castellucci and Soc etas Raffaello Sanzio written by Dorota Semenowicz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on Romeo Castellucci’s theatrical project, exploring the ethical and aesthetic framework determined by his reflection on the nature of the image. But why does a director whose fundamental artistic tool is the image deny this key conceptual notion? Rooted in his conscious distancing from iconoclasm in the 1980s, Castellucci frequently replaces this notion with the words ‘symbol’, ‘form’ and ‘idea’. As the first publication on the international market which presents Castellucci’s work from both historical and theoretical perspectives, this book systematically confronts the director’s discourse with other concepts related to his artistic project. Capturing the evolution of his theatre from icon to iconoclasm, word to image and symbol to allegory, the book explores experimental notions of staging alongside an ‘emotional wave’, which serves as an animating principle of Castellucci’s revolutionary theatre.

Download or read book Lunar Domes written by Raffaello Lena and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lunar domes are structures of volcanic origin which are usually difficult to observe due to their low heights. The Lunar Domes Handbook is a reference work on these elusive features. It provides a collection of images for a large number of lunar domes, including telescopic images acquired with advanced but still moderately intricate amateur equipment as well as recent orbital spacecraft images. Different methods for determining the morphometric properties of lunar domes (diameter, height, flank slope, edifice volume) from image data or orbital topographic data are discussed. Additionally, multispectral and hyperspectral image data are examined, providing insights into the composition of the dome material. Several classification schemes for lunar domes are described, including an approach based on the determined morphometric quantities and spectral analyses. Furthermore, the book provides a description of geophysical models of lunar domes, which yield information about the properties of the lava from which they formed and the depth of the magma source regions below the lunar surface.

Book excerpt: In 1971, a near-fatal automobile accident throws Izzy Monroe’s life into upheaval after she survives with a brain injury that leaves her with impaired short-term memory. Unable to complete her doctorate at Harvard, she retreats to her childhood home on Chappaquiddick Island, adrift and despairing. Her roommate, Maria Belli, confronts Izzy with a choice—sink deeper into numbing grief for her former self or find the courage to redefine who she is and what she wants for her life. Accepting Maria’s challenge, Izzy leaves the well-intentioned but suffocating concern of her family and takes a position at Portarello, a farm in Italy owned by Maria’s grandfather, Raffaello Richetelli. Although unsure of her decision, Izzy begins to find purpose and competence with her work on the land. But consumed with hiding her impairment and unwilling to risk forming bonds with anyone, she remains disconnected from others on the farm. Daniel Richetelli, Maria’s cousin and a young Jesuit priest in the midst of a deeply troubling crisis of faith, has been ordered to take a leave of absence and returns to his grandfather’s farm to find the answers he seeks. Both insomniacs, Izzy and Daniel encounter each other one night. In the presence of something Izzy does not yet understand, she finds her barriers dissolving and reaches out to Daniel. Izzy and Daniel realize they are both longing to heal themselves in a world that had once been filled with certainty and purpose; each of them recognizes in the other a soulmate and a lodestar. Finding their way back to wholeness takes them on a journey, filled with missteps and revelations, that ultimately leads them to a new understanding of themselves and each other.

Book The Great European Stage Directors Volume 8

Download or read book The Great European Stage Directors Volume 8 written by Luk Van den Dries and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume foregrounds Pina Bausch, Romeo Castellucci and Jan Fabre as 3 leading directors who have each left an indelible mark on post-war European theatre. Combining in-depth discussions of the artists' poetics with detailed case studies of several famous and lesser-known key works, the authors featured in this volume trace a range of foundational aesthetic strategies that are central to the directors' work: the dynamics of repetition vis-à-vis fragmentation, the continued significance of language in experimental theatre and dance, the tension between theatricality and the performative reality of the stage, and the equal importance attached to text, image and body. This volume develops a vivid picture of how European stage directors have continued to redefine their own position and role throughout the latter half of the 20th century.
