Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radium, and All About It I. Perhaps no subject has awakened so much interest, in the mind of the general public as the discovery of radium. This has been partly due to' its excessive rarity and consequent high price; partly to the suggestions made by several medical men of high repute of the possibility of its being successfully used in the treatment of cancer, sarcoma, lupus, and kindred diseases; and yet more by the extraordinary physical pro perties possessed by this new substance properties which at first glance seem de stined to revolutionise many of our accepted 'views Of the conditions in which matter, and especially the so-called elements, exist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonders of Radium: Explained in a Popular Manner This brief discourse is intended to place before you, in a popular manner, the wonders of Radium, which have revolutionised modern Science, and indeed, hold out the promise of giving to mankind new powers, undreamt of.a few years ago. It is necessary to omit all calculations, technical data, and various delicate experiments, from which the facts here given were obtained, and many of these facts, moreover, cannot be accepted as perfectly accurate, since it is desired to avoid a considerable amount of technicality which must otherwise be introduced, if the subject is to be treated from a purely scientific standpoint. My object is to explain to the mind which is not technical, the wonders of radio-active matter, and the results possible from the discovery. Consequently, the simplest language and the simplest methods must be employed. I have taken my facts in a large measure from the papers and works of Professors Rutherford, Strutt, Soddy, Makover, Sir William Ramsay, Sir J. J. Thomson, the Curies, Becquerel, and others. It was Becquerel who first investigated the radio-active nature of Uranium; and later the Curies, when examining Uranium ore for radio-active properties, found some minerals far more active than would have been expected, and naturally concluded that there must be something more in the material than the Uranium they were examining. The result was the discovery of a highly radio active substance called Polonium, which is in fact a substance produced from Radium during its disintegration. Later, the Curies found the element known as Radium, which Madame Curie was recently able to obtain in a metallic state, but which could not be kept in that state owing to its rapid combination with other elements. In fact, Radium is generally used in the form of a bro mide, sulphate, or other combination. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Becquerel Rays: And the Properties of Radium IN writing this book, my object has been to give as clear and simple an account of the phenomena of radio-activity as the subject admits of, without sacrificing accuracy. The extraordinary properties of radium have excited general interest outside the scientific world, and there are probably many who would be glad to learn something of the subject, if they could find it explained without the use of technicalities. However essential mathematical methods may be in developing the subject, they are seldom really necessary in presenting the results. Moreover, some idea of the train of reasoning can generally be given in ordinary language. I have not found it possible to avoid assuming some elementary scientific knowledge on the part of the reader, but this has been reduced to the smallest limits, and probably a great part of the book will be intelligible without it. I have not attempted to describe all the pheno mena which have been recorded, but have confined myself to those which seemed most significant and interesting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radium and Radioactivity The properties peculiar to radium are traceable to the actions of the radiations. Such properties are' action on photographic plates, power of producing beautiful scintillations and coloured phosphorescence with zinc blende and certain other minerals, power to bring about many chemical actions, continual and relatively considerable evolution of heat, and various beneficial therapeutic actions which have resulted from its application in medicine. We, must, therefore, study these radiations with exactness, and must consider their mode of produc tion. The substances producing them are known. Book Radium X Rays and the Living Cell

Download or read book Radium X Rays and the Living Cell written by Hector A. Colwell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radium, X Rays and the Living Cell: With Physical Introduction Our object in the present book is to describe some of the main experimental facts which have been established, as to the effects that the X rays and the rays from radium have upon having cells. In order to make the subject generally intelligible, a description of the properties of these radiations was necessary, and Part I. is designed, not only to provide information in this respect, but to meet the needs of those who approach the subject with a view to experimental investigation. A large amount of interest centres around the action which the rays have upon malignant cells, and some of the most detailed studies have been made by investigators in this connection. The results which have so far been reached are, we ma venture to hope, a good augury for the foundations of a rational basis of radio-therapy. This, however, is but one aspect of the effect of the rays upon the living cell, and we believe that an increased knowledge of the reactions exhibited by normal healthy cells and tissues is necessary before the real nature of the processes set up by these rays is revealed. The subject is not approached from the clinical aspect, but data have frequently been selected from the details of clinical observations, when these have borne upon the subject-matter in question. Book Radium and Radiotherapy

Download or read book Radium and Radiotherapy written by William S. Newcomet and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radium and Radiotherapy: Radium, Thorium, and Other Radio-Active Elements in Medicine and Surgery The creation of this work has been prompted by the many solicitations of the author's friends and the inquiries of many others as to where it might be possible to obtain authoritative information upon the subject of radium and its scientific and medicinal properties. The reason for these queries is that if the medical literature of the day is carefully examined, it will be found that articles upon radio-activity in the English language are exceptional. This is in marked contrast with the literature of other languages, particularly German and French, in which the most active interest prevails. While this contrast is very apparent it is not altogether without foundation, for in this country it has been difficult to procure the radio-active materials. It is possible that the relation of our public institutions to their attendant physicians may be a factor; for wherever these valuable salts have been acquired, the investigator has been obliged, in almost every instance, to bear the expense. Another fact that has to some extent discouraged American investigation is that most of the radium brought to this country has been in the hands of private speculators; and in some instances, which have recently been brought to the attention of the profession, an exorbitant price was paid for an extremely poor quality of radium. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radium, Vol. 7: September, 1916 After studying the reports of the physicians of the European spas and those from the London Radium Institute, I learned that they generally believed larger doses of radium emanation to be essential to the best therapeutic results; and that while their waters contain radium in larger quantities than our Saratoga mineral waters, yet they had found it helpful to fortify the action of the waters by the further use of radium element. I was impressed with their results, and decided to adopt their methods - this plan of treatment, therefore, I put into effect early in the spring of 1915. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radium, Vol. 3: April, 1914 As I have demonstrated in previous communications, the blood pressure was lowered in the majority of the polyarthritis cases after injection of 50 to 300 micrograms of radium (element). The blood pressure lowering properties observed in the cases after the intravenous radium salt injections suggested the use of radium in high blood pressure. Before reporting the results of these experiments I wish to refer briefly to our knowledge of the etiology of high blood pressure. The cases of hypertension we can group in three classes.
