Book Application of Radioisotopes for Aerospace Waste Reclamation and Water Systems

Download or read book Application of Radioisotopes for Aerospace Waste Reclamation and Water Systems written by Courtney A. Metzger and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A life support system designed for aerospace application was thermally powered by a radioisotope heat source at a significant saving in electrical energy. This report summarizes the research program and resulting design, development, and evaluation of a vacuum distillation-vapor pyrolysis water reclamation system that was subjected to a 30-day isotope powered unmanned test. In addition to the savings of electrical energy the application of a radioisotope heat source is expected to result in a simple and more reliable water recovery system producing an excellent quality water without the use of pre- or post treatment for extended periods of operation. Discussed are other water recovery processes that show good promise for the utilization of isotopes for the thermal energy that have been subjected to comparison evaluation using electrical energy. The use of several waste management techniques to obtain a complex integrated system are discussed including urine and fecal collection, fecal storage, potable hot and cold water storage and dispensing, and potability measurements that show promise for the use of the waste heat from the isotopes.

Book excerpt: The book Radioisotopes - Applications in Physical Sciences is divided into three sections namely: Radioisotopes and Some Physical Aspects, Radioisotopes in Environment and Radioisotopes in Power System Space Applications. Section I contains nine chapters on radioisotopes and production and their various applications in some physical and chemical processes. In Section II, ten chapters on the applications of radioisotopes in environment have been added. The interesting articles related to soil, water, environmental dosimetry/tracer and composition analyzer etc. are worth reading. Section III has three chapters on the use of radioisotopes in power systems which generate electrical power by converting heat released from the nuclear decay of radioactive isotopes. The system has to be flown in space for space exploration and radioisotopes can be a good alternative for heat-to-electrical energy conversion. The reader will very much benefit from the chapters presented in this section.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research conducted to obtain a process and system design for the recovery of potable drinking water from human waste during extensive space flights revealed that the most promising process required considerable thermal energy for satisfactory operation. The large consumption of electrical energy prohibits system acceptability when the energy drain is on the vehicle electrical supply system. To meet the need for thermal energy, radioisotopes were investigated and found to conform with the known requirements. The review of previous research on water recovery systems, the design and development of the Air Force modified system, and detailed data on two (36 and 39 day) tests with the isotopes in place supplying the total thermal energy is presented in the report. The complex system is considered a technological breakthrough and for the first time, a radioisotope fueled system is programmed for a 90-day manned chamber test, recovering drinking water from human waste for consumption by four crewmen during the experiment.
