This book is a comprehensive resource for understanding where the field stands, as well as providing a stepping stone for continued advancement of the field, from developing new techniques, to applying techniques on other planetary bodies. Summarizes and reviews significant progress in the field of magnetospheric imaging Covers all of the techniques and technologies available, including a basic overview of each, as well as what it can accomplish, how it works, what its limitations are, and how it might be improved Details ways for measuring the space environment on a global scale, what physical measurements various technologies can provide, and how they can be effectively used

Book An Investigation of High Energy Radio Propagation in the Atmosphere

Download or read book An Investigation of High Energy Radio Propagation in the Atmosphere written by Walter A. Flood and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of rf breakdown measurements at 106 Mcs in a large waveguide are reported. Breakdown measurements for air, oxygen and nitrogen were made as a function of pressure (10-1000 microns), pulse length and pulse repetition frequency. The data indicate that when diffusion losses are minimized, a value of 30 volts per com-mmHg is obtained for the breakdown threshold over a pressure range from 200 - 1000 microns. The principle that ion cyclotron resonance in weakly ionized gases can be detected, and that the collision cross-section pertinent to the reaction can be determined from the resonance line width is proved. The effect of known processes of electron production and loss upon the steady-state electron concentration and upon atmospheric breakdown is discussed. Breakdown is described as a sudden increase in electron concentration occurring at a specific field, upon negligible increase of field from this value. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James L. Burch·C. Philippe Escoubet Originally published in the journal Space Science Reviews, Volume 145, Nos 1–2, 1–2. DOI: 10. 1007/s11214-009-9532-7 © Springer Science+Business Media B. V. 2009 The IMAGE and CLUSTER spacecraft have revolutionized our understanding of the inner magnetosphere and in particular the plasmasphere. Before launch, the plasmasphere was not a prime objective of the CLUSTER mission. In fact, CLUSTER might not have ever observed this region because a few years before the CLUSTER launch (at the beginning of the 1990s), it was proposed to raise the perigee of the orbit to 8 Earth radii to make multipoint measu- ments in the current disruption region in the tail. Because of ground segment constraints, this proposal did not materialize. In view of the great depth and breadth of plasmaspheric research and numerous papers published on the plasmasphere since the CLUSTER launch, this choice certainly was a judicious one. The fact that the plasmasphere was one of the prime targets in the inner magnetosphere for IMAGE provided a unique opportunity to make great strides using the new and comp- mentary measurements of the two missions. IMAGE, with sensitive EUV cameras, could for the rst time make global images of the plasmasphere and show its great variability d- ing storm-time. CLUSTER, with four-spacecraft, could analyze in situ spatial and temporal structures at the plasmapause that are particularly important in such a dynamic system.

Book A Problem Solving Workbook on Ionospheric and Space Physics

Download or read book A Problem Solving Workbook on Ionospheric and Space Physics written by Rezy Pradipta and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-01-04 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Problem-Solving Workbook on Ionospheric and Space Physics Enables students to understand and master basic and advanced concepts of space, atmosphere, and ionospheric physics A Problem-Solving Workbook on Ionospheric and Space Physics is a unique textbook that contains a set of problems and exercises accompanied with complete solutions that explore and elucidate the most relevant concepts in ionospheric and space physics. The author has chosen problems that are interesting topic-wise, challenging, and that exemplify the physical and mathematical reasoning in ionospheric and space physics. Specifically, the text conveys core concepts of ionospheric and space physics using a problem-based approach. Each problem elucidates prototypical aspects that readers can easily generalize. Each problem also consists of multi-part questions to facilitate step-by-step understanding. A short introduction to each problem defines the theme and provides context to the readers. In A Problem-Solving Workbook on Ionospheric and Space Physics, readers can expect to learn about: Remote sensing of ionospheric plasmas from the ground, ionospheric slab thickness of a transparent layer, reflectometry, and doppler effects in reflection/refraction of electromagnetic waves Chapman theory of ionospheric layer formation, magnetic fields generated by the equatorial electrojet current, and fundamentals of GPS total electron content (TEC) measurements Barker codes and radar pulse compression, abel inversion of ionosonde trace data, and phase and group velocities of acoustic-gravity waves The use of deconvolution in radar scans, sporadic-E layers and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability due to wind shear, and Brunt-Vaisala frequency Thanks to the careful selection of included material, A Problem-Solving Workbook on Ionospheric and Space Physics serves as a gateway for advanced students and early-career researchers towards actual research-level problems in the field. As the problems are textbook-agnostic, students can easily self-study and learn about the subject outside the classroom.

Book Numerical Calculations for Reflection of Electromagnetic Waves from a Lossy Magnetoplasma

Download or read book Numerical Calculations for Reflection of Electromagnetic Waves from a Lossy Magnetoplasma written by Lillie C. Walters and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensive numerical results are presented for the reflection coefficient of a horizontally stratified ionized medium. The profiles of electron density and the collision frequencies are both taken to be exponential functions. The d-c magnetic field is taken to be horizontal and transverse to the direction of propagation. The specific results described are applicable to the oblique reflection of VLF radio waves in the D layer of the ionosphere for propagation along the magnetic equator. It is confirmed that the reflection coefficient is non-reciprocal in both amplitude and phase. For a wide range of the parameters, the magnitude of the reflection coefficient is greater for west-to-east propagation than for east-to-west propagation. The extensive graphical data in the present paper are to be regarded as supplementary to the paper 'Reflection of Electromagnetic Waves from a Lossy Magetoplasma' which contained only a small sample of such calculations.
