Book Will Bonsall s Essential Guide to Radical Self Reliant Gardening

Download or read book Will Bonsall s Essential Guide to Radical Self Reliant Gardening written by Will Bonsall and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Society does not generally expect its farmers to be visionaries." Perhaps not, but longtime Maine farmer and homesteader Will Bonsall does possess a unique clarity of vision that extends all the way from the finer points of soil fertility and seed saving to exploring how we can transform civilization and make our world a better, more resilient place. In Will Bonsall's Essential Guide to Radical, Self-Reliant Gardening, Bonsall maintains that to achieve real wealth we first need to understand the economy of the land, to realize that things that might make sense economically don't always make sense ecologically, and vice versa. The marketplace distorts our values, and our modern dependence on petroleum in particular presents a serious barrier to creating a truly sustainable agriculture. For him the solution is, first and foremost, greater self-reliance, especially in the areas of food and energy. By avoiding any off-farm inputs (fertilizers, minerals, and animal manures), Bonsall has learned how to practice a purely veganic, or plant-based, agriculture--not from a strictly moralistic or philosophical perspective, but because it makes good business sense: spend less instead of making more. What this means in practical terms is that Bonsall draws upon the fertility of on-farm plant materials: compost, green manures, perennial grasses, and forest products like leaves and ramial wood chips. And he grows and harvests a diversity of crops from both cultivated and perennial plants: vegetables, grains, pulses, oilseeds, fruits and nuts--even uncommon but useful permaculture plants like groundnut (Apios). In a friendly, almost conversational way, Bonsall imparts a wealth of knowledge drawn from his more than forty years of farming experience. "My goal," he writes, "is not to feed the world, but to feed myself and let others feed themselves. If we all did that, it might be a good beginning."

Book Praying Dangerously

Download or read book Praying Dangerously written by Regina Ryan and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2012-07-23 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praying Dangerously instructs us that we can grow up spiritually, leaving behind a childish relationship to prayer as a superstitious ritual or mere plea for favors. It encourages readers to recognize the difference between prayer that asks only for reassurance, and prayer that asks for the Ultimate, and stands for transformation. We can cease being ‘victims of Gods Will, while at the same time embracing genuine surrender and reliance on the irrefutable power of love,” says author and retreat leader Regina Sara Ryan. Readers of the first edition (published in 2001) were enthusiastic in their praise, calling it a brave and useful book. Prayer groups and church congregations around the U.S. have used it for study, and it has been translated into Dutch, German and French. And the message of the book is more relevant now than it was 10 years ago. The insecurities of our times draw us inward or back to our churches. In prayer groups and retreats of all kinds we are looking for comfort and consolation, for spiritual direction, or for answers to the eternal questions that have always challenged humanity. This book is a valued contribution in that search. This 10th anniversary edition is fully revised, with several completely new chapters including: The High Cost of Forgiveness”-a subject that challenges everyone-and Praying on the Subway,” about how our generally busy and often chaotic lives can provide us with a constant impetus for blessing others.

Book Revolutions in Taste 1773 1818

Download or read book Revolutions in Taste 1773 1818 written by Fiona Price and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How and to what extent did women writers shape and inform the aesthetics of Romanticism? Were undervalued genres such as the romance, gothic fiction, the tale, and the sentimental and philosophical novel part of a revolution leading to newer, more democratic models of taste? Fiona Price takes up these important questions in her wide-ranging study of women's prose writing during an extended Romantic period. While she offers a re-evaluation of major women writers such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Maria Edgeworth, Ann Radcliffe and Charlotte Smith, Price also places emphasis on less well-known figures, including Joanna Baillie, Anna Letitia Barbauld, Elizabeth Hamilton and Priscilla Wakefield. The revolution in taste occasioned by their writing, she argues, was not only aesthetic but, following in the wake of British debates on the French Revolution, politically charged. Her book departs from previous studies of aesthetics that emphasize the differences between male and female writers or focus on higher status literary forms such as the treatise. In demonstrating that women writers' discussion of taste can be understood as an intervention at the most fundamental level of political involvement, Price advances our understanding of Romantic aesthetics.

Book The Masses are the Ruling Classes

Download or read book The Masses are the Ruling Classes written by William M. Epstein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Masses are the Ruling Classes argues that popular sentiments rule social decision making and that elites are essentially obedient to democratic preferences, and not the other way around. The US is deeply committed to a series of values -- extreme individualism, emotional sources of truth, and a sense of chosenness -- that stunt its social development. These ideas are developed in the context of iconic social welfare programs.

Book Psalms for Preaching and Worship

Download or read book Psalms for Preaching and Worship written by Roger E. Van Harn and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2009-04-10 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psalms for Preaching and Worship a key addition to the critically acclaimed three-volume Lectionary Commentary / Despite the rich resources available for studying the Psalms, few are as focused on their place in worship and preaching as is this volume. The responsorial Psalms of the Revised Common Lectionary are here taken up in careful and often illuminating interpretation with attention also to their interaction with other lectionary texts. The many ways that psalms can function meaningfully in the liturgical life of congregations are explored especially in John Witvliet s concluding section. I know of no work that combines practice and substance better than this lectionary commentary. Patrick D. Miller / Princeton Theological Seminary / A fascinating book well organized, well written and edited, thorough, and informative. . . . An excellent resource not only for preachers using the Revised Common Lectionary but also for those wishing to preach a series of sermons on the Psalms. In addition, worship leaders and worship committees will appreciate the many excellent ideas for using the Psalms in worship. Highly recommended. Sidney Greidanus / author of Preaching Christ from the Old Testament and Preaching Christ from Genesis / Here is something even better than a simple completion of The Lectionary Commentary, which would be cause enough for gratitude. . . . Serious attention paid to this one book could go a long way toward remedying the scandalous neglect of the treasure of the Psalms in too much contemporary worship. Marguerite Shuster / Fuller Theological Seminary / Contributors: Nancy R. Bowen, William P. Brown, Walter Brueggemann, Richard J. Clifford, Nancy L. deClaiss-Walford, Jennifer S. Green, Karl N. Jacobson, Rolf A. Jacobson, Melody D. Knowles, Eunny P. Lee, Joel M. LeMon, James Limburg, J. Clinton McCann, James K. Mead, Carol A. Miles, Luke A. Powery, Stephen Breck Reid, Sandra L. Download or read book Covenant Essays Three written by T. Hoogsteen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays within these covers inform and challenge. T. Hoogsteen recognized that even with the world-changing alterations caused by migrations, disasters, and wars profoundly reshaping the face of the earth and its human community, the Lord Jesus Christ creates history. Nothing on earth or in the universe happens from fatalistic forces. In the Bible, imagebearing and officebearing come through with imposing insistence; we cannot assume that we can be who we want to be, independent individuals or communist societies. The Lord gives each person a place and a task for our lives. Self-examination, a forgotten responsibility, comes to the fore with compelling insight. Who are you in the presence of the Christ? An ignored exercise of prolegomena--the explanatory word before starting theological work--is recognized as significant for this introductory effort. The author discovered ancient Greek mythology holding up the formidable Nicene Creed, Homoean Christology, and the Athanasian, matters that need deletion and reformation. The ideal of the freedom of the will has long, at least since the third century AD, intrigued the church and the world outside. Freedom of the will is a pagan invention. Christ Jesus in the name of the Father and through the Spirit gives perspective even in darkest times.
