Book Radiation Therapy of Head and Neck Cancer

Download or read book Radiation Therapy of Head and Neck Cancer written by George E. Laramore and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contemporary management of patients with cancers of the head and neck is under careful scrutiny and major changes are being introduced in order to improve the potenti al not only for long-term control but also for less in the way of disfiguring and distres sing complications associated with the treatment programs. In 1988, the American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 42400 new cases of malignant tumors of the head and neck diagnosed with 12 850 deaths. In general, the prognosis for patients with malignant tumors of the head and neck re gion depends upon the site of origin, the local and regional extent of the tumor, the Kar nofsky status of the patient as well as the patient's general medical condition. The poten tial for cure for early stage tumors is extremely high particularly for those lesions involving the vocal cord, oral cavity, and the anterior two-thirds of the tongue. Major advances have been made in the management of head and neck cancer by the innovative utilization of surgery with radiation therapy. Small tumors can be cured by ei ther surgery or radiation therapy with equally good results. However, far advanced tu mors are more complicated and more difficult to cure requiring combined, integrated, multimodal programs of management. Therefore, the previously general poor prognosis for advanced tumors is becoming better with more aggressive treatment regimens.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of great advance made by ENT and maxillofacial surgeons as well as radiotherapists to improve therapy of cancer of the oral cavity and oropharynx, it has not been possible in the past 4 decades to raise the chances of patient survival above 40%-45%. However, recent studies with different combination therapies indicate that better results can be expected in the future. In this volume, the current status and results of therapeutic studies are presented by distinguished clinicians in the three disciplines. The book provides up-to-date information and encourages interdisciplinary cooperation.

Book Cancer of the Oral Cavity Pharynx and Larynx

Download or read book Cancer of the Oral Cavity Pharynx and Larynx written by Jesus E. Medina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for residents and practitioners of otolaryngology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and maxiollofacial surgery, this book provides the reader with a comprehensive, concise discussion of the best evidence available on which to base clinical decisions needed when managing patients with squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx. Because of its accessible and practical format, this book is considerably different than other related titles on the market. Formatted with questions at the beginning of each chapter that are then answered with evidence and best practices available for each case, each chapter addresses situations the clinician is likely to face in the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of a patient with cancer of the head and neck. Most clinical decisions in the management of cancers of the head and neck region are based on the results of a few controlled, randomized clinical trial trials (Evidence Level I). However, most decision-making is based on the results of case-control studies (Evidence Level II), descriptive studies, reports of expert committees, or opinions of respected authorities (Evidence Level III). This information is scattered throughout the literature and often comingled with information about other topics. Therefore, there is a need for a publication in which the evidence pertinent to making decisions regarding a particular clinical problem is distilled from the literature and presented in a single concise, clinical, situation-driven source. Cancer of the Oral Cavity, Pharynx and Larynx: Evidence-Based Decision Making is just such a resource.

Book Oral Cavity and Oropharyngeal Cancer An Issue of Otolaryngologic Clinics

Download or read book Oral Cavity and Oropharyngeal Cancer An Issue of Otolaryngologic Clinics written by Jeffrey N. Myers and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While cancers of the oral cavity and oropharynx were overwhelming found in smokers and drinkers, a dramatic shift is occurring with a dramatic rise in the incidence of HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancers while oral cavity cancers and HPV-negative oropharyngeal cancers appear to be declining in incidence, reflecting the reduction in cigarette smoking. These trends also have implications for how Otolaryngologists prevent, diagnose, workup, treat, and follow these patients. The focus of information in this issue is on oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer and the implications of the HPV epidemic on this disease. Amongst the medical community during this period of trying to better grasp the association of HPV with oropharyngeal cancers, there are misconceptions and a lack of knowledge of these important shifts which are addressed by Guest Editors Jeffrey Myers and Erich Sturgis of the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center. Topics include: Epidemiology- Control of a tobacco epidemic? But emergence of a HPV epidemic?; Oral cavity and Oropharyngeal Cancer Genomics; Why Otolaryngologists need to be aware of Fanconi anemia; Impact on HPV on Orpharyngeal Cancer Biology and Response to Therapy-Implications for Treatment; Oral premalignancy- The roles of early detection and chemoprevention; Evaluation and staging- Limitations despite technological breakthroughs; 7) Surgical treatment innovations; Radiotherapy- The “Particle-rs of energy, dose, and delivery method; Systemic Treatment- Its role before, during, and after definitive treatment; How to maximize functional assessment/rehabilitation; Standardizing treatment for Cancers – An approach to cancer care or crisis?; Survivorship in Oral Cancer- Competing mortalities, morbidities, and second malignancies.
