Book Radiation induced Segregation in Light ion Bombarded Ni 8 Si

Download or read book Radiation induced Segregation in Light ion Bombarded Ni 8 Si written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tensile specimens 60 .mu.m thick of Ni-8 at. % Si have been bombarded at 475°C to doses of 0.1 to 0.3 dpa with either 7 MeV proton or 28 MeV alpha particle beams. Deliberate embrittlement by high temperature (700°C) preimplantation of helium was required to produce intergranular fracture. Depth profile sputtering and analysis in a Scanning Auger Microprobe was then used to study radiation-induced segregation of silicon both at the external surfaces and at internal interfaces. The external surfaces exhibited a strongly silicon-enriched zone for the first 10 to 20 nm followed by a broad (approx. 200 nm), shallow silicon-depleted region. Segregation of silicon to grain boundaries varied from interface to interface and possibly from region to region on a given interface. In general, however, depth profiles of silicon content with distance from internal boundaries showed no noticeable depletion zone and a more gradual fall-off compared to the profiles from external surfaces. The variations of RIS among boundaries and with type of interface probably reflect, at least in part, intrinsic differences in sink efficiency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation-induced segregation (RIS) is an important area of current research because of potential detrimental effects including embrittlement. In this work, a quantitative assessment is made of radiation-induced silicon segregation to internal grain boundaries compared with that to the external surfaces. Tension specimens of Ni-8 atomic % Si have been irradiated at 750 K (475°C) with either 7-MeV protons or 28-MeV alpha particles to damage levels of 0.1 to 0.3 dpa. Postirradiation tension testing at 300, 720, or 975 K produces ductile failures with elongations > 15%. However specimens that had implantation of 250 to 1000 atomic ppm He at 975 K (700°C) before irradiation did fracture intergranularly when pulled at 975 K inside a scanning Auger microprobe, thereby exposing grain boundary surfaces for depth profile analysis. After correction for preferential sputtering effects, RIS of silicon to outer surfaces is found to give rise to a strongly enriched surface layer, 20 to 30 nm thick, followed by a shallow depletion zone for the next ~200 nm, in agreement with previous studies in the literature. By contrast, silicon segregation to fracture-exposed grain faces varies considerably from face to face but generally declines more gradually with little or no depletion zone. Observations of silicon profiles and Ni3Si formation at grain boundaries obtained by analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) generally confirm the Auger results.

Book Atomistic Mechanisms in Beam Synthesis and Irradiation of Materials Volume 504

Download or read book Atomistic Mechanisms in Beam Synthesis and Irradiation of Materials Volume 504 written by and published by Mrs Proceedings. This book was released on 1999-03 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some 70 papers focus on atomistic processes that occur in metals, ceramics and glasses, and polymers exposed to energetic beams in order to synthesize or modify a material. Sections also explore defects and modelling, energetic particle synthesis and mechanical properties, and optical materials and nanoclusters. The invited papers cover defect evolution in ion-implanted Silicon from point to extended defects, achievements of the Japanese government and university projects in ion and laser beam technology, forming metastable materials by ion-beam-assisted deposition and its application to metal clusters in ceramic matrices, and the mesoscale engineering of nanocomposite nonlinear optical materials. Book Effects of Ion Implantation and Temperature on Radiation induced Segregation in Ni 9Al Alloys

Download or read book Effects of Ion Implantation and Temperature on Radiation induced Segregation in Ni 9Al Alloys written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of Ne and Sc implantation on radiation-induced segregation (RIS) in Ni-9at.%Al were studied in-situ using the high-voltage electron microscope/Tandem accelerator at ANL. A highly-focused 900- keV electron beam generated radial defect fluxes which, in turn, induced transport of Al atoms toward the center of the electron- irradiated area via the inverse Kirkendall effect. Radial segregation rate of Al atoms was monitored by measuring the diameter of the[gamma][prime]-Ni[sub 3]Al zone which formed in the Al-enriched area during irradiation. Ne and Sc implantation effects on RIS were investigated at 550 C; Ne effects were also examined at 625 C to determine effect of temperature on ability of Ne to act as defect trapping sites, causing RIS suppression. It was found that the RIS suppression effect of Ne increased with irradiation temperature and that Sc had a small RIS suppression effect which increased with Sc implantation dose. Ne bubbles which formed during implantation are believed to be responsible for its strong suppression effect. 6 figs, 12 refs.
