Book Radiation Hardening in Neutron Irradiated Molybdenum and Its Alloys

Download or read book Radiation Hardening in Neutron Irradiated Molybdenum and Its Alloys written by K. Fukaya and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molybdenum and its alloys [molybdenum-titanium-zirconium (TZM) and Mo-0.56Nb] were neutron-irradiated in the Japan Research Reactor-2 and the Japan Material Testing Reactor at temperature between 873 and 1263 K to fluences in the range 1.2 to 3.0 x 1024 neutrons/m2 (E > 1 MeV). The effect of these irradiations on mechanical properties was investigated and interpreted in terms of change in microstructure. Radiation hardening caused by voids was observed. The formation of precipitates in the irradiated specimen during the neutron irradiation or during the tension test above 800 K contributed additional hardening. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) of the irradiated molybdenum and TZM was above room temperature, but below 773 K. The total elongation above 773 K suggested the irradiation temperature dependence of DBTT in the irradiated molybdenum. The DBTT of Mo-0.56Nb alloy was only slightly above room temperature. Annealing this alloy at 1273 K resulted in room temperature ductility to near the preirradiation value. These results suggest that the Mo-0.56Nb alloy is a good candidate material for use as a heat protection wall of a fusion reactor.

Book Saturation of Swelling in Neutron Irradiated Molybdenum and Its Dependence on Irradiation Temperature and Starting Microstructural State

Download or read book Saturation of Swelling in Neutron Irradiated Molybdenum and Its Dependence on Irradiation Temperature and Starting Microstructural State written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molybdenum and its alloys are of interest for potential fusion application due to their high melting point and relatively good thermal conductivities. The development of void superlattices during neutron irradiation appears to limit void swelling in pure molybdenum to values below 4% over a wide range of irradiation temperatures. The saturation value of swelling and the void superlattice parameter each appear to be somewhat dependent on temperature, but independent of the thermomechanical starting state. Formation of technetium and ruthenium by transmutation may also play some minor role in the microstructural evolution, but do not appear to be involved in the limitation of swelling.

Book Decrease of Ductility Upon Neutron Irradiation in Iron Alloys and Columbium

Download or read book Decrease of Ductility Upon Neutron Irradiation in Iron Alloys and Columbium written by N. Igata and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the study is to analyze the change of the work hardening exponent and the decrease of uniform strain at the load instability point due to neutron irradiation from phenomenological dislocation theory comparing the data of aged specimens. The materials used were columbium, pure iron, iron copper, and iron molybdenum alloys. The work hardening exponent decreases mainly from the reason of the less contribution of dislocation to hardening due to obstacle hardening by irradiation. The decrease of uniform strain comes from two reasons. The one is that the critical dislocation density for uniform strain decreases although dislocation multiplication rate increases with irradiation or aging. The other is due to the decrease of the work hardening exponent which becomes the upper limit of the uniform strain.

Book The Effect of Neutron Irradiation on the Tensile Properties and Microstructure of Several Vanadium Alloys

Download or read book The Effect of Neutron Irradiation on the Tensile Properties and Microstructure of Several Vanadium Alloys written by DN. Braski and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specimens of V-15Cr-5Ti, VANSTAR-7, and V-3Ti-1Si were encapsulated in molybdenum alloy tubes containing 7Li to prevent interstitial pickup and irradiated in the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF), using Materials Open Test Assembly (MOTA) experiments, to a damage level of 40 displacements per atom (dpa). The irradiation temperatures were 420, 520, and 600°C. For a better simulation of fusion reactor conditions, helium was preimplanted in some specimens using a modified version of the "tritium trick." The V-15Cr-5Ti alloy was most susceptible to irradiation hardening and helium embrittlement, followed by VANSTAR-7, and V-3Ti-1Si. VANSTAR-7 exhibited a relatively high maximum void swelling of ~6% at 520°C while V-15Cr-5Ti and V-3Ti-1Si had values of
