Book Radiation from Pulsed Electron Beams in Space Plasmas

Download or read book Radiation from Pulsed Electron Beams in Space Plasmas written by K. J. Harker and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical study has been made of the electromagnetic radiation arising from pulsed electron beams. The study assumes an electron beam which has a well organized spatial structure determined by a fixed trajectory in a magnetic field and on/off pulsing governed by the electron source. From this model the electromagnetic radiation is determined by adding coherently the radiation from each individual electron in the helical stream. This study was comprised of three parts. In the first part the number of beam pulses was assumed finite, and the beam was assumed to extend from z = minus infinity to plus infinity. In the second part we assumed as infinite pulse train and took into account that the beam extends only in the half-space from z=0 (the gun position) outward to infinity. Formulas for the radiation as a function of ray angle, propagation angle, electron beam pulse width and separation, and beam current, voltage and pitch angle were determined. Predictions of the power radiated were made for representative examples. In the third part the theory was generalized to the near field region. Keywords: Radiation; Pulsed Electron Beams; Space Plasmas; Coherent Spontaneous Emission; Cerenkov Radiation; Cyclotron Radiation.

Download or read book Frontiers in High Energy Density Physics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-05-11 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent scientific and technical advances have made it possible to create matter in the laboratory under conditions relevant to astrophysical systems such as supernovae and black holes. These advances will also benefit inertial confinement fusion research and the nation's nuclear weapon's program. The report describes the major research facilities on which such high energy density conditions can be achieved and lists a number of key scientific questions about high energy density physics that can be addressed by this research. Several recommendations are presented that would facilitate the development of a comprehensive strategy for realizing these research opportunities.

Book Cyclotron Harmonic Radiation from Electron Beam Injection Into an Afterglow Plasma

Download or read book Cyclotron Harmonic Radiation from Electron Beam Injection Into an Afterglow Plasma written by Thomas C. Marshall and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pulsed electron beam was injected into an afterglow produced by a P.I.G. discharge in low pressure argon. The beam and the afterglow form concentric posts in X-band waveguide on which accurate microwave measurements were made. Radiation at the cyclotron harmonics was observed from the simultaneous beam and afterglow plasmas when the beam was too low to generate its own radiating plasma. Radiation was enhanced when the experimental parameters were consistent with the Bernstein electrostatic dispersion relations. Observations of the width of the third harmonic radiation resonance as the plasma frequency was varied are in qualitative agreement with the theory of Auer and Stone. Space charge fluctuations at the receiver frequency (9.2 Gc) were also observed when the radiation occurred. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains information on scientific research and applications of a very diverse field of low temperature plasma physics – the interaction of electron beams with plasma and, as a consequence of this interaction, a beam plasma discharge. It contains detailed descriptions of the history of the relevant research, a review of experimental research of properties of the low-temperature plasma with an electron beam and beam plasma discharge, and presents the main results of beam plasma interaction theory. Most of the book is devoted to descriptions of applications of the plasma with a beam and beam plasma discharge in a variety of fields; from studies of the physics of near-Earth space using active geophysical experiments to the development of materials technologies for micro- and nanoelectronics and designs of plasma-filled electronic devices. This book will be useful as an introduction to this field for undergraduate and graduate students specializing in plasma physics, as well as for other specialists in various fields of physics and technologies.

Book Diagnostics of Pulsed Plasmas and Electron Beam plasma Interactions

Download or read book Diagnostics of Pulsed Plasmas and Electron Beam plasma Interactions written by Robert R. Pepper and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A microwave phase bridge or interferometer was constructed and tested for the purpose of measuring high electron densities in pulsed plasmas. The initiation and growth, both in time and space, of a pulsed plasma (1 torr) were studied by observations of intensity and line shape of several spectral lines. Measurement of Stark splitting yielded plots of electric field intensity and hence space charge distribution as functions of axial position and time. The discharge started near the anode and propagated towards the cathode, the electric field near the cathode reached 45 Kv/ cm in 25 nanoseconds and remained at about 58 Kv/ cm during almost the total pulse duration of 500 nanoseconds. The total optical radiation after 24 nanoseconds is only 5 percent of its value after 500 nanoseconds. A set-up was constructed for studying interactions between an electron beam and a plasma. The plasma was produced by e electron impact in the beam when the gas pressure was between 0.0001 and 0.01 torr. Some electronic gain was observed but no quantitative results were obtained because of experimental difficulties in maintaining a strong beam and a an appropriate plasma. (Author).

The subjects chosen for this first course reflect the recent interest in TeV electron positron colliders, the possibility offered by Free Electron Lasers to power them and the developments in the production of high brightness electron beams.

Book Self effect in Expanding Electron Beam Plasma

Download or read book Self effect in Expanding Electron Beam Plasma written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical model of plasma flow from a metal plate hit by an intense, pulsed, electron beam aims to bridge the gap between radiation-hydrodynamics simulations and experiments, and to quantify the self-effect of the electron beam penetrating the flow. Does the flow disrupt the tight focus of the initial electron bunch, or later pulses in a train? This work aims to model the spatial distribution of plasma speed, density, degree of ionization, and magnetization to inquire. The initial solid density, several eV plasma expands to 1 cm and 10−4 relative density by 2 [mu]s, beyond which numerical simulations are imprecise. Yet, a Faraday cup detector at the ETA-II facility is at 25 cm from the target and observes the flow after 50 [mu]s. The model helps bridge this gap. The expansion of the target plasma into vacuum is so rapid that the ionized portion of the flow departs from local thermodynamic equilibrium. When the temperature (in eV) in a parcel of fluid drops below V{sub i} x [(2[gamma] - 2)/(5[gamma] + 17)], where V{sub i} is the ionization potential of the target metal (7.8 eV for tantalum), and [gamma] is the ratio of specific heats (5/3 for atoms), then the fractional ionization and electron temperature in that parcel remain fixed during subsequent expansion. The freezing temperature as defined here is V{sub i}/19. The balance between the self-pinching force and the space charge repulsion of an electron beam changes on penetrating a flow: (i) the target plasma cancels the space-charge field, (ii) internal eddy currents arise to counter the magnetization of relativistic electrons, and (iii) electron beam heating alters the flow magnetization by changing the plasma density gradient and the magnitude of the conductivity.
