Book Radiation Damage in Cesium Iodide and Other Scintillating Crystals

Download or read book Radiation Damage in Cesium Iodide and Other Scintillating Crystals written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation damage in scintillating crystals is discussed in terms of how it can affect the performance of crystals used in a high resolution electromagnetic calorimeter. An attempt is made to identify certain principle causes of damage and describe how these may affect various parameters such as light output, energy resolution and noise. A discussion of radiation damage in barium fluoride is given as an example of how these effects can be understood and how the radiation hardness of a given crystal can be improved. Radiation damage in doped and undoped cesium iodide is compared in order to distinguish between damage occurring in the undoped material and those which could be caused by dopants such as sodium or thallium. New results on radiation damage in both doped and undoped CsI are also discussed.

Book Radiation Damage in Single Crystal CsI Tl and Polycrystal CsI

Download or read book Radiation Damage in Single Crystal CsI Tl and Polycrystal CsI written by O. Barnouin and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation damage in single crystal CsI(Tl) and polycrystal CsI was assessed by measuring the changes in radioluminescent intensity caused by successive neutron and gamma ray pulses from a TRIGA nuclear reactor. The radioluminescent intensity from the single crystal decreases within nine pulses by 30% in the near infrared range (0.7-4.5 ?m) and by 25% in the visible range (0.2-1 ?m) before staying constant. For the polycrystal CsI, the emission in the visible range decreases by 60% within 6 pulses and then remains constant, whereas no measurable emission is observed in the infrared. Finally, a heating and cooling cycle is shown to repair the damage for both crystals.

Book COMPARISON OF CESIUM IODIDE AND SODIUM IODIDE FOR UNDERWATER RADIATION DETECTION SYSTEMS

Download or read book COMPARISON OF CESIUM IODIDE AND SODIUM IODIDE FOR UNDERWATER RADIATION DETECTION SYSTEMS written by and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparison is made between NaI and CsI scintillation detectors for application to an ultrasensitive underwater detection system. A series of measurements are reported on the response of each crystal to the gamma rays from 40K distributed in water, the attenuation of the integrated count rate by aluminum and steel absorbers surrounding the detector and the background count rate from contaminants on the crystal-phototube assembly and pressure housings. It is assumed in the discussion that NaI crystals will always have to be protected from thermal and mechanical shock by a pressure vessel and that CsI, which is much less susceptible to these types of shock, can be exposed to the hydrostatic pressures in the ocean without damage. The minimum detectable change in 40K concentration is calculated, based on the measured signal and background counts for a CsI crystal and several NaI assemblies with steel and aluminum pressure vessels. It is concluded that, for deep submergence work with detectors of equivalent size, a CsI system is the most sensitive and when compared in terms of a specific detection capability, the least expensive. To complete the evaluation, the assumption that CsI can be operated to all depths without a pressure vessel must be confirmed.

Book Radiation Damage in Undoped CsI and CsI Tl

Download or read book Radiation Damage in Undoped CsI and CsI Tl written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation damage has been studied in undoped CsI and CsI(TI) crystals using 6°Co gamma radiation for doses up to (approximately) 4.2 x 106. Samples from various manufacturers were measured ranging in size from 2.54 cm long cylinders to a 30 cm long block. Measurements were made on the change in optical transmission and scintillation light output as a function of dose. Although some samples showed a small change in transmission, a significant change in light output was observed for all samples. Recovery from damage was also studied as a function of time and exposure to UV light. A short lived phosphorescence was observed in undoped CsI, similar to the phosphorescence seen in CsI(TI).

Download or read book Particle Detectors written by Hermann Kolanoski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 949 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fundamentals of particle detectors as well as their applications. Detector development is an important part of nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics, and through its applications in radiation imaging, it paves the way for advancements in the biomedical and materials sciences. Knowledge in detector physics is one of the required skills of an experimental physicist in these fields. The breadth of knowledge required for detector development comprises many areas of physics and technology, starting from interactions of particles with matter, gas- and solid-state physics, over charge transport and signal development, to elements of microelectronics. The book's aim is to describe the fundamentals of detectors and their different variants and implementations as clearly as possible and as deeply as needed for a thorough understanding. While this comprehensive opus contains all the materials taught in experimental particle physics lectures or modules addressing detector physics at the Master's level, it also goes well beyond these basic requirements. This is an essential text for students who want to deepen their knowledge in this field. It is also a highly useful guide for lecturers and scientists looking for a starting point for detector development work.
