Book Defects and Radiation Damage in Metals

Download or read book Defects and Radiation Damage in Metals written by M. W. Thompson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1969 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of radiation damage in solids generally has been stimulated by the technological demands of nuclear energy and space research. Professor Thompson's 1969 book discusses the basic atomic mechanisms which give rise to the main effects induced by radiation in metals, since it is in their relatively simple structures that the fundamental processes can be most easily identified. The first part of the book describes the nature of lattice defects in metal crystals. The presentation leads naturally into the discussion of radiation damage in the second part and recognises the important contribution that the study of irradiated metals has made to our general knowledge of defects. The wide coverage of this book includes developments in our understanding of collision cascades, of the clustering of point defects and the behaviour of impurities induced by irradiation.

Book Radiation Damage and Thermal Annealing of Defects in Molybdenum and Tungsten

Download or read book Radiation Damage and Thermal Annealing of Defects in Molybdenum and Tungsten written by A. N. Ivanov and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation damage to high temperature metal homologues of molybdenum and tungsten as a function of dose and the reactor irradiation temperature is investigated. The studies were conducted with polycrystalline specimens 99.9 percent pure in the case of molybdenum and 99.85 percent in the case of tungsten. Variation if the specific electric resistance was used as a measure of the radiation damage. The saturation effect of the radiation damage and the differences observed between the behavior of molybdenum and tungsten are discussed from the standpoint of the thermal stability of the radiation defects formed in them. The part played by radiation alloying when tungsten is irradiated with large thermal neutron doses is also discussed. A study is made of the thermal annealing of radiation defects in molybdenum and tungsten subjected to various irradiation doses at temperatures above room temperature. The similarity between the three recovery stages in the increase in specific electric resistance, observed during annealing in these metals, and the nature of the defects responsible for the recovery stages are discussed. The variation in fine crystal structure for molybdenum and tungsten during reactor irradiation and subsequent annealing is investigated. (Author).

Book Fundamental Aspects of Inert Gases in Solids

Download or read book Fundamental Aspects of Inert Gases in Solids written by S.E. Donnelly and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Fundamental Aspects of Inert Gases in Solids, held at Bonas, France from 16-22 September 1990, was the fifth in a series of meetings that have been held in this topic area since 1979. The Consultants' Meeting in that year at Harwell on Rare Gas Behaviour in Metals and Ionic Solids was followed in 1982 by the Jiilich Inter national Symposium on Fundamental Aspects of Helium in Metals. Two smaller meetings have followed-a CECAM organised workshop on Helium Bubbles in Metals was held at Orsay, France in 1986 while in February 1989, a Topical Symposium on Noble Gases in Metals was held in Las Vegas as part of the large TMS/AIME Spring Meeting. As is well known, the dominating feature of inert gas atoms in most solids is their high heat of solution, leading in most situations to an essentially zero solubility and gas-atom precipita tion. In organising the workshop, one particular aim was to target the researchers in the field of inert-gas/solid interactions from three different areas--namely metals, tritides and nuclear fuels-in order to encourage and foster the cross-fertilisation of approaches and ideas. In these three material classes, the behaviour of inert gases in metals has probably been most studied, partly from technological considerations-the effects of helium production via (n, a) reac tions during neutron irradiation are of importance, particularly in a fusion reactor environ ment-and partly from a more fundamental viewpoint.
