Book Non Invasive Quantitative and Remote Detection of Early Radiation Cataracts for Applications in Bio Astronautics and Bio Informatics

Download or read book Non Invasive Quantitative and Remote Detection of Early Radiation Cataracts for Applications in Bio Astronautics and Bio Informatics written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by . This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human exploration of Mars may be a possibility in the next twenty years. Maintaining good vision is an essential aspect of achieving a successful mission. Continuous radiation exposure is a risk factor for radiation-induced cataracts in astronauts. A compact device based on the technique of dynamic light scattering (DLS) is designed for monitoring an astronaut's ocular health during long-duration space travel. Preliminary data on the simulated effects of ionizing radiation exposure to the ocular tissues of nonhuman animals and results on the sensitivity of DLS over established clinical procedures in investigating cataracts are presented. This capability of early diagnosis, unmatched by any other clinical technique in use today, may enable prompt initiation of preventive/curative therapy. An internet web based system integrating photon correlation data and controlling the hardware to monitor cataract development in vivo at a remote site in real time (teleophthalmology) is currently being developed. Cataract studies on-board the International Space Station (ISS) will be helpful in designing better protective radiation shields for future space vehicles and space suits. Book Health Effects of Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation

Download or read book Health Effects of Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reevaluates the health risks of ionizing radiation in light of data that have become available since the 1980 report on this subject was published. The data include new, much more reliable dose estimates for the A-bomb survivors, the results of an additional 14 years of follow-up of the survivors for cancer mortality, recent results of follow-up studies of persons irradiated for medical purposes, and results of relevant experiments with laboratory animals and cultured cells. It analyzes the data in terms of risk estimates for specific organs in relation to dose and time after exposure, and compares radiation effects between Japanese and Western populations.

Book Progress in Lens and Cataract Research

Download or read book Progress in Lens and Cataract Research written by Kazuyuki Sasaki and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding cataract risk factors is a vital topic in preventative medicine and offers hope to the multitude of people in the world who cannot be aided by an intraocular lens implantation. In the multifaceted process of cataract development ultraviolet radiation is one of the important risk factors. This publication focuses on clinical studies, epidemiologic data as well as experimental approaches to ultraviolet radiation and its effects on the lens. Further articles discuss the cataract epidemiology and the biochemistry of the lens. In addition lens research in the 20th century is evaluated with regard to methods and results. The book is dedicated to Professor K. Sasaki from the University of Ishikawa (Japan) and his research over the last twenty years. Ophthalmologists in practice as well as those involved in lens and cataract research or interested in the mechanisms and the pathogenesis of lens opacification in old age will find a wealth of information in this volume. Likewise, it will be essential to physicians working in public health services, environmental medicine, and those concerned with eye damage caused by radiation.

Book Radiotherapy of Intraocular and Orbital Tumors

Download or read book Radiotherapy of Intraocular and Orbital Tumors written by Winfried E. Alberti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiotherapy of Intraocular and Orbital Tumors presents a new approach to the role of radiation therapy in the management of ophthalmic cancer. The indications for ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging studies are analyzed, and treatment techniques, together with their results, are described for each tumor. Particle beam and plaque irradiation are reviewed, and conservative and surgical management of radiation effects are detailed. In the past, most books on this subject included a chapter on radiotherapy but emphasized the dangers of radiation complications. However, great progress in understanding the effects of irradiation upon the tissues of the eye and orbit, new therapeutic equipment, and new imaging techniques (CT, MRI) allow for careful treatment planning. This book has taken the long overdue step of reconsidering the role of irradiation of the eye so that it may take its place as a respected, rather than feared, treatment in the combined modality approach so important today. Together with experts in relevant fields, the editors have produced a refreshingly clear and thoroughly referenced volume which will be a valuable asset to all ophthalmologists, radiation oncologists, pediatricians, endocrinologists, oncologists, and residents in training, as well as to students in these disciplines.
